Superconductivity and Magnetism in Non-centrosymmetric System: Application to CePt_3Si

Superconductivity and magnetism in the non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion compound CePt$_3$Si and related materials are theoretically investigated. Based on the randam phase approximation (RPA) analysis for the extended Hubbard model we describe the helical spin fluctuation induced by the Rashba-type anti-symmetric spin-orbit coupling and identify the two stable superconducting phases with either dominantly p-wave ($s$ + $P$-wave) or d-wave ($p$ + $D$ + $f$-wave) symmetry. The influcnce of the coexistent anti-ferromagnetic order is investigated in both states. The SC order parameter, quasiparticle density of state, NMR $1/T_{1}T$, specific heat, anisotropy of $H_{\rm c2}$ and possible multiple phase transitions are discussed in details. The comparison with experimental results indicates that the $s$ + $P$-wave superconducting state is likely realized in CePt$_3$Si.

Edge Effect on Electronic Transport Properties of Graphene Nanoribbons and Presence of Perfectly Conducting Channel

Numerical calculations have been performed to elucidate unconventional electronic transport properties in disordered nanographene ribbons with zigzag edges (zigzag ribbons). The energy band structure of zigzag ribbons has two valleys that are well separated in momentum space, related to the two Dirac points of the graphene spectrum. The partial flat bands due to edge states make the imbalance between left- and right-going modes in each valley, {\it i.e.} appearance of a single chiral mode. This feature gives rise to a perfectly conducting channel in the disordered system, i.e. the average of conductance $ $ converges exponentially to 1 conductance quantum per spin with increasing system length, provided impurity scattering does not connect the two valleys, as is the case for long-range impurity potentials. Ribbons with short-range impurity potentials, however, through inter-valley scattering, display ordinary localization behavior. Symmetry considerations lead to the classification of disordered zigzag ribbons into the unitary class for long-range impurities, and the orthogonal class for short-range impurities. The electronic states of graphene nanoribbons with general edge structures are also discussed, and it is demonstrated that chiral channels due to the edge states are realized even in more general edge structures except for armchair edges.

Antiferromagnetic order in the FFLO state

We investigate the antiferromagnetic (AF) order in the d-wave superconducting (SC) state at high magnetic fields. A two-dimensional model with on-site repulsion U, inter-site attractive interaction V and antiferromagnetic exchange interaction J is solved using the mean field theory. For finite values of U and J, a first order transition occurs from the normal state to the FFLO state, while the FFLO-BCS phase transition is second order, consistent with the experimental results in CeCoIn_5. Although the BCS-FFLO transition is continuous, the Ne'el temperature of AF order is discontinuous at the phase boundary because the AF order in the FFLO state is induced by the Andreev bound state localized in the zeros of FFLO order parameter, while the AF order hardly occurs in the uniform BCS state. The spatial structure of the magnetic moment is investigated for the commensurate AF state as well as for the incommensurate AF state. The influence of the spin fluctuations is discussed for both states. Since the fluctuations are enhanced in the normal state for incommensurate AF order, this AF order can be confined in the FFLO state. The experimental results in CeCoIn_5 are discussed.

Interplay of metamagnetic and structural transitions in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$

Metamagnetism in layered ruthenates has been interpreted as a novel kind of quantum critical behavior. In an external magnetic field, Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ undergoes a metamagnetic transition accompanied by a pronounced magnetostriction effect. In this paper we present a mean-field study for a microscopic model that naturally reproduces the key features of this system. The phase diagram calculated is equivalent to the experimental $T$-$x$ phase diagram. The presented model also gives a good basis to discuss the critical metamagnetic behavior measured in the system.

Aspects of metallic low-temperature transport in Mott-insulator/ band-insulator superlattices: optical conductivity and thermoelectricity

We investigate the low-temperature electrical and thermal transport properties in atomically precise metallic heterostructures involving strongly-correlated electron systems. The model of the Mott-insulator/ band-insulator superlattice was discussed in the framework of the slave-boson mean-field approximation and transport quantities were derived by use of the Boltzmann transport equation in the relaxation-time approximation. The results for the optical conductivity are in good agreement with recently published experimental data on (LaTiO$_3)_N$/(SrTiO$_3)_M$ superlattices and allow us to estimate the values of key parameters of the model. Furthermore, predictions for the thermoelectric response were made and the dependence of the Seebeck coefficient on model parameters was studied in detail. The width of the Mott-insulating material was identified as the most relevant parameter, in particular, this parameter provides a way to optimize the thermoelectric power factor at low temperatures.

Anomalous Thermal Conductivity of Semi-Metallic Superconductors with Electron-Hole Compensation

The effects of low carrier density and carrier compensation on mixed-state thermal transport are investigated beyond the quasiclassical approximation. It is shown that, contrary to the usual observations, the interplay of the two effects leads to an {\it increase} in the thermal conductivity immediately below the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. Our result can account for the anomalous behavior of the mixed-state thermal conductivity near $H_{c2}$ recently observed in URu$_2$Si$_2$.

Magnetic Properties in Non-centrosymmetric Superconductors with and without Antiferromagnetic Order

The paramagnetic properties in non-centrosymmetric superconductors with and without antiferromagnetic (AFM) order are investigated with focus on the heavy Fermion superconductors, CePt_3Si, CeRhSi_3 and CeIrSi_3. First, we investigate the spin susceptibility in the linear response regime and elucidate the role of AFM order. The spin susceptibility at T=0 is independent of the pairing symmetry and increases in the AFM state. Second, the non-linear response to the magnetic field are investigated on the basis of an effective model for CePt_3Si which may be also applicable to CeRhSi_3 and CeIrSi_3. The role of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC), helical superconductivity, anisotropic Fermi surfaces and AFM order are examined in the dominantly s-, p- and d-wave states. We emphasize the qualitatively important role of the mixing of superconducting (SC) order parameters in the p-wave state which enhances the spin susceptibility and suppresses paramagnetic depairing effect in a significant way. Therefore, the dominantly p-wave superconductivity admixed with the s-wave order parameter is consistent with the paramagnetic properties of CePt_3Si at ambient pressure. We propose some experiments which can elucidate the novel pairing states in CePt_3Si as well as CeRhSi_3 and CeIrSi_3.

Chirality sensitive effect on surface states in chiral p-wave superconductors

We study the local density of states at the surface of a chiral p-wave superconductor in the presence of a weak magnetic field. As a result, the formation of low-energy Andreev bound states is either suppressed or enhanced by an applied magnetic field, depending on its orientation with respect to the chirality of the p-wave superconductor. Similarly, an Abrikosov vortex, which is situated not too far from the surface, leads to a zero-energy peak of the density of states, if its chirality is the same as that of the superconductor, and to a gap structure for the opposite case. We explain the underlying principle of this effect and propose a chirality sensitive test on unconventional superconductors.

Jahn-Teller effect versus Hund's rule coupling in C60N-

We propose variational states for the ground state and the low-energy collective rotator excitations in negatively charged C60N- ions (N=1...5). The approach includes the linear electron-phonon coupling and the Coulomb interaction on the same level. The electron-phonon coupling is treated within the effective mode approximation (EMA) which yields the linear t_{1u} x H_g Jahn-Teller problem whereas the Coulomb interaction gives rise to Hund's rule coupling for N=2,3,4. The Hamiltonian has accidental SO(3) symmetry which allows an elegant formulation in terms of angular momenta. Trial states are constructed from coherent states and using projection operators onto angular momentum subspaces which results in good variational states for the complete parameter range. The evaluation of the corresponding energies is to a large extent analytical. We use the approach for a detailed analysis of the competition between Jahn-Teller effect and Hund's rule coupling, which determines the spin state for N=2,3,4. We calculate the low-spin/high-spin gap for N=2,3,4 as a function of the Hund's rule coupling constant J. We find that the experimentally measured gaps suggest a coupling constant in the range J=60-80meV. Using a finite value for J, we recalculate the ground state energies of the C60N- ions and find that the Jahn-Teller energy gain is partly counterbalanced by the Hund's rule coupling. In particular, the ground state energies for N=2,3,4 are almost equal.

Non-centrosymmetric Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetic Order: Microscopic discussion of CePt$_3$Si

The influence of antiferromagnetic order on the superconductivity in the non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion compound CePt$_3$Si and related materials is discussed. Based on our RPA analysis for the extended Hubbard model two phases could be stabilized by a spin fluctuation induced pairing, with either dominantly p-wave or d-wave symmetry. The antiferromagnetic order plays an essential role for the low-energy physics, in particular, for the appearance of line nodes in the gap and the enhancement of spin susceptibility below $T_{\rm c}$. Various properties and possible phase diagrams under pressure are analyzed. The present experimental situation suggests that the p-wave phase is most likely realized in CePt$_3$Si.

Perfectly Conducting Channel and Universality Crossover in Disordered Nano-Graphene Ribbons

The band structure of graphene ribbons with zigzag edges have two valleys well separated in momentum space, related to the two Dirac points of the graphene spectrum. The propagating modes in each valley contain a single chiral mode originating from a partially flat band at band center. This feature gives rise to a perfectly conducting channel in the disordered system, if the impurity scattering does not connect the two valleys, i.e. for long-range impurity potentials. Ribbons with short-range impurity potentials, however, through inter-valley scattering display ordinary localization behavior. The two regimes belong to different universality classes: unitary for long-range impurities and orthogonal for short-range impurities.

Strongly renormalized quasi-two-dimensional electron gas in a heterostructure with correlation effects

We present aspects of strong electron correlation in a model of a BI/M/BI heterostructure where BI is a band insulator and M can be tuned from a metal to a Mott insulator by varying the on-site repulsion. An effective one-dimensional Schroedinger equation for the low-energy part is derived in the framework of the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson mean-field theory and solved self-consistently for a wide range of the on-site interaction strength and of the width of the sandwiched material M. In the strongly interacting limit coherent quasiparticles responsible for metallic behavior are confined to a relatively narrow region near the interfaces where they form a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas. Due to the lack of spatial homogeneity these quasiparticles intrinsically obtain a nontrivial dependence on the transverse momentum which for example enters the low-energy behavior of the optical conductivity.

Plaquette bond order wave in the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on the checkerboard lattice

An extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor repulsion and antiferromagnetic spin exchange) is investigated on the frustrated checkerboard lattice, a two-dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice. Combining Gutzwiller renormalized mean-field (MF) calculations, exact diagonalization (ED) techniques, and a weak-coupling renormalization group (RG) analysis we provide strong evidence for a crystalline valence bond plaquette phase at quarter-filling. The ground state is twofold degenerate and breaks translation symmetry. The bond energies show a staggering while the charge distribution remains uniform.

Bond order wave instabilities in doped frustrated antiferromagnets: "Valence bond solids" at fractional filling

We explore both analytically and numerically the properties of doped t-J models on a class of highly frustrated lattices, such as the kagome and the pyrochlore lattice. Focussing on a particular sign of the hopping integral and antiferromagnetic exchange, we find a generic symmetry breaking instability towards a twofold degenerate ground state at a fractional filling below half filling. These states show modulated bond strengths and only break lattice symmetries. They can be seen as a generalization of the well-known valence bond solid states to fractional filling.

Theory for Inelastic Neutron Scattering in Orthorhombic High-Tc Superconductors

Using a Fermi-liquid-based theory we calculate the in-plane anisotropy of the spin susceptibility for hole-doped high-T_c cuprates. Employing the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model and a generalized RPA-type theory we consider anisotropic hopping matrix elements ($t_x \neq t_y$) and a mixing of d- and s-wave symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in order to describe orthorhombic superconductors. We compare our calculations with available inelastic neutron scattering data on untwinned YBa{2}Cu{3}O{7-δ} and find good agreement. Furthermore, we predict a strongly anisotropic in-plane dispersion of the resonance peak.

Quasiparticle Dynamics in the Kondo Lattice Model at Half Filling

We study spectral properties of quasiparticles in the Kondo lattice model in one and two dimensions including the coherent quasiparticle dispersions, their spectral weights and the full two-quasiparticle spectrum using a cluster expansion scheme. We investigate the evolution of the quasiparticle band as antiferromagnetic correlations are enhanced towards the RKKY limit of the model. In both the 1D and the 2D model we find that a repulsive interaction between quasiparticles results in a distinct antibound state above the two-quasiparticle continuum. The repulsive interaction is correlated with the emerging antiferromagnetic correlations and can therefore be associated with spin fluctuations. On the square lattice, the antibound state has an extended s-wave symmetry.

Ehrenfest relations and magnetoelastic effects in field-induced ordered phases

Magnetoelastic properties in field-induced magnetic ordered phases are studied theoretically based on a Ginzburg-Landau theory. A critical field for the field-induced ordered phase is obtained as a function of temperature and pressure, which determine the phase diagram. It is found that magnetic field dependence of elastic constant decreases discontinuously at the critical field, Hc, and that it decreases linearly with field in the ordered phase (H>Hc). We found an Ehrenfest relation between the field dependence of the elastic constant and the pressure dependence of critical field. Our theory provides the theoretical form for magnetoelastic properties in field- and pressure-induced ordered phases.

Effect of spin-orbit coupling on zero-conductance resonances in asymmetrically coupled one-dimensional rings

The influence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling on zero conductance resonances appearing in one dimensional ring asymmetrically coupled to two leads is investigated. For this purpose, the transmission function of the corresponding one-electron scattering problem is derived analytically and analyzed in the complex energy plane with focus on the zero-pole structure characteristic of transmission (anti)resonances. The lifting of real conductance zeros due to spin-orbit coupling in the asymmetric Aharonov-Casher (AC) ring is related to the breaking of spin reversal symmetry in analogy to the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the asymmetric Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring.
