Parity-broken ground state for the spin-1 pyrochlore antiferromagnet

The ground-state properties of the spin-1 pyrochlore antiferromagnet are studied by applying the VBS-like tetrahedron-unit decomposition to the original spin system. The symmetrization required on every vertex is taken into account by introducing a ferromagnetic coupling. The pairwise effective Hamiltonian between the adjacent tetrahedrons is obtained by considering the next nearest neighbor and the third neighbor exchange interactions. We find that the transverse component of the spin chirality exhibits a long-range order, breaking the parity symmetry of the tetrahedral group, while the chirality itself is not broken.

Vortex structure in chiral p-wave superconductors

We investigate the vortex structure in chiral p-wave superconductors by the Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory on a tight-binding model. We calculate the spatial structure of the pair potential and electronic state around a vortex, including the anisotropy of the Fermi surface and superconducting gap structure. The differences of the vortex structure between $\sin p_x + {\rm i} \sin p_y$-wave and $ \sin p_x - {\rm i} \sin p_y$-wave superconductors are clarified in the vortex lattice state. We also discuss the winding $\mp 3$ case of the $\sin{(p_x+p_y)} \pm {\rm i} \sin{(-p_x+p_y)}$-wave superconductivity.

Phenomenological theory of the 3 Kelvin phase in Sr2RuO4

We model the 3K-phase of Sr2RuO4 with Ru-metal inclusion as interface state with locally enhanced transition temperatures. The resulting 3K-phase must have a different pairing symmetry than the bulk phase of Sr2RuO4, because the symmetry at the interface is lower than in the bulk. It is invariant under time reversal and a second transition, in general, above the onset of bulk superconductivity is expected where time reversal symmetry is broken. The nucleation of the 3K-phase exhibits a ``capillary effect'' which can lead to frustration phenomena for the superconducting states on different Ru-inclusions. Furthermore, the phase structure of the pair wave function gives rise to zero-energy quasiparticle states which would be visible in quasiparticle tunneling spectra. Additional characteristic properties are associated with the upper critical field Hc2. The 3K-phase has a weaker anisotropy of Hc2 between the inplane and z-axis orientation than the bulk superconducting phase. This is connected with the more isotropic nature Ru-metal which yields a stronger orbital depairing effect for the inplane magnetic field than in the strongly layered Sr$_2RuO4. An anomalous temperature dependence for the z-axis critical field is found due to the coupling of the magnetic field to the order parameter texture at the interface. Various other experiments are discussed and new measurements are suggested.

Spontaneous Hall effect in chiral p-wave superconductor

In a chiral superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry a ``spontaneous Hall effect'' may be observed. We analyze this phenomenon by taking into account the surface properties of a chiral superconductor. We identify two main contributions to the spontaneous Hall effect. One contribution originates from the Bernoulli (or Lorentz) force from spontaneous currents running along the surfaces of the superconductor. The other contribution has a topological origin and is related to the intrinsic angular momentum of Cooper pairs. The latter can be described in terms of a Chern-Simons-like term in the low-energy field theory of the superconductor and has some similarities with the quantum Hall effect. The spontaneous Hall effect in a chiral superconductor is, however, non-universal. Our analysis is based on three approaches to the problem: a self-consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, a generalized Ginzburg-Landau theory, and a hydrodynamic formulation. All three methods consistently lead to the same conclusion that the spontaneous Hall resistance of a two-dimensional superconducting Hall bar is of order h/(e k_Fλ)^2, where k_F is the Fermi wave vector and λis the London penetration depth; the Hall resistance is substantially suppressed from a quantum unit of resistance. Experimental issues in measuring this effect are briefly discussed.

The influence of chiral surface states on the London penetration depth in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

The London penetration depth for the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is analyzed assuming an order parameter which breaks time reversal symmetry and parity simultaneously. Such a superconducting state possesses chiral quasiparticle states with subgap energies at the surface. We show that these subgap states can give a significant contribution to the low-temperature behavior of the London penetration depth yielding a $ T^2 $ power-law even though bulk quasiparticle spectrum is gapped. The presence of several electron bands gives rise to interband transition among the subgap surface states and influences the properties of the surface impedance. Furthermore, the surface states lead also to a non-linear Meissner effect.

Zero-Conductance Resonances due to Flux States in Nanographite Ribbon Junctions

The electronic transport properties through junctions in nanographite ribbons are investigated using the Landauer approach. In the low-energy regime ribbons with zigzag boundary have a single conducting channel of edge states. The conductance as a function of the chemical potential shows a rich structure with sharp dips of zero conductance. Each zero-conductance resonance is connected with a resonant state which can be interpreted as the superposition of two degenerate flux states with Kekulé-like current patterns. These zero-conductance dips are connected with a pronounced negative magneto resistance.

The role of spin-orbit coupling for the superconducting state in Sr_2RuO_4

The odd-parity spin-triplet Cooper pairing states show a six-fold degeneracy for a quasi-two-dimensional electron system. In this article we show how spin-orbit coupling can lift this degeneracy for Sr_2RuO_4 taking the band structure based on the three relevant t_{2g}-orbitals of the Ru-ions into account. The stabilized state depends on the relative strength of the pairing interaction. We show that under reasonable assumptions the chiral pairing state d(k) = z(k_x +/- i k_y) is favored against the others.

The role of domain walls on the vortex creep dynamics in unconventional superconducors

We investigate the influence of domain walls on the vortex dynamics in superconductors with multi-component order parameters. We show that, due to their complex structure domain walls can carry vortices with fractional flux quanta. The decay of conventional vortices into fractional ones on domain walls is examined. This decay presents an extraordinarily strong pinning mechanism for vortices and turns domain walls occupied with pinned fractional vortices into efficient barriers for the vortex motion. Therefore, domain walls can act as fences for the flux flow, preventing the decay of the remnant magnetic flux enclosed by them. Furthermore, the consequences of this property of domain walls on the vortex dynamics are discussed in connection with observed noise in the hysteresis cycle, using the Bean model of the critical vortex state. Based on this picture experimental data in the unconventional superconductors UPt$_3$, U$_{1-x}$Th$_x$Be$_{13}$ and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ are interpreted.

Quasiparticle States near the Surface and the Domain Wall in a p_x \pm i p_y-Wave Superconductor

The electronic states near a surface or a domain wall in the p_x \pm i p_y -wave superconductor are studied. This state has been recently suggested as the superconducting state of Sr_2 Ru O_4. The p_x \pm i p_y-wave paring state breaks the time reversal symmetry and induces a magnetic field. The obtained temperature dependence of the magnetic field is consistent with the observed μSR data.

Phenomenological Theory of Superconductivity and Magnetism in Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$Ni$_2$B$_2$C

The coexistence of the superconductivity and magnetism in the Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$Ni$_2$B$_2$C is studied by using Ginzburg-Landau theory. This alloy shows the coexistence and complex interplay of superconducting and magnetic order. We propose a phenomenological model which includes two magnetic and two superconducting order parameters accounting for the multi-band structure of this material. We describe phenomenologically the magnetic fluctuations and order and demonstrate that they lead to anomalous behavior of the upper critical field. The doping dependence of $T_c$ in Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$Ni$_2$B$_2$C showing a reentrance behavior are analyzed yielding a very good agreement with experimental data.

Quasiparticle States near the Surface and the Domain Wall in a p_x\pm i p_y-Wave Superconductor

The electronic states near a surface or a domain wall in the p-wave superconductor are studied for the order parameter of the form p_x\pm i p_y-wave, which is a unitary odd-parity state with broken time-reversal symmetry. This state has been recently suggested as the superconducting state of Sr_2 Ru O_4. The spatial variation of the order parameter and vector potential is determined self-consistently within the quasi-classical approximation. The local density of states at the surface is constant and does not show any peak-like or gap-like structure within the superconducting energy gap, in contrast to the case of the d-wave superconductors. The influence of an external magnetic field is mainly observable in the energy range above the bulk gap. On the other hand, there is a small energy gap in the local density of states at the domain wall between domains of the two degenerate p_x+i p_y-wave and p_x-i p_y-wave states.

Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Nanographite Ribbons

Electronic and magnetic properties of ribbon-shaped nanographite systems with zigzag and armchair edges in a magnetic field are investigated by using a tight binding model. One of the most remarkable features of these systems is the appearance of edge states, strongly localized near zigzag edges. The edge state in magnetic field, generating a rational fraction of the magnetic flux (ϕ= p/q) in each hexagonal plaquette of the graphite plane, behaves like a zero-field edge state with q internal degrees of freedom. The orbital diamagnetic susceptibility strongly depends on the edge shapes. The reason is found in the analysis of the ring currents, which are very sensitive to the lattice topology near the edge. Moreover, the orbital diamagnetic susceptibility is scaled as a function of the temperature, Fermi energy and ribbon width. Because the edge states lead to a sharp peak in the density of states at the Fermi level, the graphite ribbons with zigzag edges show Curie-like temperature dependence of the Pauli paramagnetic susceptibility. Hence, it is shown that the crossover from high-temperature diamagnetic to low-temperature paramagnetic behavior of the magnetic susceptibility of nanographite ribbons with zigzag edges.

An SO(5) model of p-wave superconductivity and ferromagnetism

We study an SO(5) model unifying p-wave superconductivity and ferromagnetism. If only a single p-wave pairing wavefunction is involved, the p-wave superconducting (pSC) and ferromagnetic (F) states can be unified to form 10-dimensional multiplet of SO(5). The collective modes in pSC and F states are studied from this viewpoint in terms of a non-linear sigma model.

Chiral Optical Absorption by a Vortex in p_x \pm i p_y-Wave Superconductor

The chiral optical absorption by a single vortex in a p_x \pm i p_y-wave superconductor is studied theoretically. The p_x \pm i p_y-wave state was recently suggested as the symmetry of the order parameter of Sr_2 Ru O_4 superconductor. Due to the violation of time reversal symmetry, there are two types of vortices whose winding orientation is the same or opposite to the angular momentum of the Cooper pair. In a real material domains with p_x \pm i p_y-wave states are expected. However, optical absorption of circular polarized light depends only on the winding of the vortex and has a low energy absorption peak which results in dichroism. Dichroism occurs if superconductivity is realized on a single Fermi surface sheet. However, in the case of several Fermi surface sheets dichroism may disappear, if the both types of carriers are present, electron-like and hole-like. Therefore chiral optical absorption is a possible experiment to detect the orbital dependent superconductivity which was suggested as the superconducting state of Sr_2 Ru O_4.

Monte Carlo Study of the Separation of Energy Scales in Quantum Spin 1/2 Chains with Bond Disorder

One-dimensional Heisenberg spin 1/2 chains with random ferro- and antiferromagnetic bonds are realized in systems such as $Sr_3 CuPt_{1-x} Ir_x O_6$. We have investigated numerically the thermodynamic properties of a generic random bond model and of a realistic model of $Sr_3 CuPt_{1-x} Ir_x O_6$ by the quantum Monte Carlo loop algorithm. For the first time we demonstrate the separation into three different temperature regimes for the original Hamiltonian based on an exact treatment, especially we show that the intermediate temperature regime is well-defined and observable in both the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility. The crossover between the regimes is indicated by peaks in the specific heat. The uniform magnetic susceptibility shows Curie-like behavior in the high-, intermediate- and low-temperature regime, with different values of the Curie constant in each regime. We show that these regimes are overlapping in the realistic model and give numerical data for the analysis of experimental tests.

Effects of Disorder on the Competition between Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity

Motivated by the observation of unusual magnetism in Ce_xCu_2Si_2 ($x\sim 1$), we study the effect of disorder, such as Ce vacancy, on the competition between superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AF) on the basis of the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory. Assuming that the AF-SC transition is of first order in clean system, we show that a single impurity in the SC state can induce staggered magnetization by suppressing the SC around it. For finite concentration of impurities, the first-order AF-SC boundary in the clean case is replaced by a finite region where the SC and the induced AF moments coexist microscopically with spatially varying order parameters. We argue that spin excitation spectrum in the coexistent state has a dual structure of SC gapped mode and the low-energy spin-wave mode. In accordance with the emergence of AF out of SC ground state, the spectral weight will be transferred from the former mode to the latter, keeping the structure of both modes basically unchanged.

Instabilities at [110] Surfaces of d_{x^2-y^2} Superconductors

We compare different scenarios for the low temperature splitting of the zero-energy peak in the local density of states at (110) surfaces of d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors, observed by Covington et al. (Phys.Rev.Lett.79 (1997), 277). Using a tight binding model in the Bogolyubov-de Gennes treatment we find a surface phase transition towards a time-reversal symmetry breaking surface state carrying spontaneous currents and an s+id-wave state. Alternatively, we show that electron correlation leads to a surface phase transition towards a magnetic state corresponding to a local spin density wave state.

Thermodynamics of Random Ferromagnetic Antiferromagnetic Spin-1/2 Chains

Using the quantum Monte Carlo Loop algorithm, we calculate the temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility, the specific heat, the correlation length, the generalized staggered susceptibility and magnetization of a spin-1/2 chain with random antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic couplings, down to very low temperatures. Our data show a consistent scaling behavior in all the quantities and support strongly the conjecture drawn from the approximate real-space renormalization group treatment.A statistical analysis scheme is developed which will be useful for the search of scaling behavior in numerical and experimental data of random spin chains.
