Fast optical cooling of a nanomechanical cantilever by a dynamical Stark-shift gate

The efficient cooling of the nanomechanical resonators is essential to exploration of quantum properties of the macroscopic or mesoscopic systems. We propose such a laser-cooling scheme for a nanomechanical cantilever, which works even for the low-frequency mechanical mode and under weak cooling lasers. The cantilever is attached by a diamond nitrogen-vacancy center under a strong magnetic field gradient and the cooling is assisted by a dynamical Stark-shift gate. Our scheme can effectively enhance the desired cooling efficiency by avoiding the off-resonant and unexpected carrier transitions, and thereby cool the cantilever down to the vicinity of the vibrational ground state in a fast fashion.

Tunable double optomechanically induced transparency in an optomechanical system

We study the dynamics of a driven optomechanical cavity coupled to a charged nanomechanical resonator via Coulomb interaction, in which the tunable double optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) can be observed from the output field at the probe frequency by controlling the strength of the Coulomb interaction. We calculate the splitting of the two transparency windows, which varies near linearly with the Coulomb coupling strength in a robust way against the cavity decay. Our double-OMIT is much different from previously mentioned double-EIT and can be applied to measure Coulomb coupling strength.

Bidirectional and tunable single-photons multi-channel quantum router between microwave and optical light

Routing of photon play a key role in optical communication and quantum networks. Although the quantum routing of signals has been investigated in various systems both in theory and experiment. However, no current theory can route quantum signals between microwave and optical light. Here, we propose an experimentally accessible tunable multi-channel quantum routing proposal using photon-phonon translation in a hybrid opto-electromechanical system. It is the first demonstration that the single-photon of optical frequency can be routed into three different output ports by adjusting microwave power. More important, the two output signals can be selected according to microwave power. Meanwhile, we also demonstrate the vacuum and thermal noise will be insignificant for the optical performance of the single-photon router at temperature of the order of 20 mK. Our proposal may have paved a new avenue towards multi-channel router and quantum network.

Tunable single-photon multi-channel quantum router based on a hybrid optomechanical system

Routing of photon play a key role in optical communication networks and quantum networks. Although the quantum routing of signals has been investigated in various systems both in theory and experiment, the general form of quantum routing with multi-output terminals still needs to be explored. Here, we propose an experimentally accessible tunable single-photon multi-channel routing scheme using a optomechanics cavity coulomb coupling to a nanomechanical resonator. The router can extract a single-photon from the coherent input signal directly modulate into three different output channels. More important, the two output signal frequencies can be selected by adjusting Coulomb coupling strength. We also demonstrate the vacuum and thermal noise will be insignificant for the optical performance of the single-photon router at temperature of the order of 20 mK. Our proposal may have paved a new avenue towards multi-channel router and quantum network.

Generating the Schrodinger cat state in a nanomechanical resonator coupled to a charge qubit

We propose a scheme for generating the Schrödinger cat state based on geometric operations by a nanomechanical resonator coupled to a superconducting charge qubit. The charge qubit, driven by two strong classical fields, interacts with a high-frequency phonon mode of the nanomechanical resonator. During the operation, the charge qubit undergoes no real transitions, while the phonon mode of the nanomechanical resonator is displaced along different paths in the phase space, dependent on the states of the charge qubit, which yields the Schrödinger cat state. The robustness of the scheme is justified by considering noise from environment, and the feasibility of the scheme is discussed.

Phase-controlled Fano resonance by the nanoscale optomechanics

Observation of the Fano line shapes is essential to understand properties of the Fano resonance in different physical systems. We explore a tunable Fano resonance by tuning the phase shift in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on a single-mode nano-optomechanical cavity. The Fano resonance is resulted from the optomechanically induced transparency caused by a nano-mechanical resonator and can be tuned by applying an optomechanical MZI. By tuning the phase shift in one arm of the MZI, we can observe the periodically varying line shapes of the Fano resonance, which represents an elaborate manipulation of the Fano resonance in the nanoscale optomechanics.

Fast optical cooling of nanomechanical cantilever with the dynamical Zeeman effect

We propose an efficient optical electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) cooling scheme for a cantilever with a nitrogen-vacancy center attached in a non-uniform magnetic field using dynamical Zeeman effect. In our scheme, the Zeeman effect combined with the quantum interference effect enhances the desired cooling transition and suppresses the undesired heating transitions. As a result, the cantilever can be cooled down to nearly the vibrational ground state under realistic experimental conditions within a short time. This efficient optical EIT cooling scheme can be reduced to the typical EIT cooling scheme under special conditions.

A complicated Duffing oscillator in the surface-electrode ion trap

The oscillation coupling and different nonlinear effects are observed in a single trapped $^{40}Ca^{+}$ ion confined in our home-built surface-electrode trap (SET). The coupling and the nonlinearity are originated from the high-order multipole potentials due to different layouts and the fabrication asymmetry of the SET. We solve a complicated Duffing equation with coupled oscillation terms by the multiple scale method, which fits the experimental values very well. Our investigation in the SET helps for exploring nonlinearity using currently available techniques and for suppressing instability of qubits in quantum information processing with trapped ions.

Cooling a charged mechanical resonator with time-dependent bias gate voltages

We show a purely electronic cooling scheme to cool a charged mechanical resonator (MR) down to nearly the vibrational ground state by elaborately tuning bias gate voltages on the electrodes, which couple the MR by Coulomb interaction. The key step is the modification of time-dependent effective eigen-frequency of the MR based on the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant. With respect to a relevant idea proposed previously [Li et al., Phys. Rev. A 83, 043803 (2011)], our scheme is simpler, more practical and completely within the reach of current technology.

Precision measurement of charge number with optomechanically induced transparency

We propose a potentially practical scheme to precisely measure the charge numbers of small charged objects by optomechanical systems using optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT). In contrast to the conventional measurements based on the noise backaction on the optomechanical systems, our scheme makes use of the small deformation of the mechanical resonator sensitive to the charge number of the nearby charged object, which could achieve the detection of a single charge. The relationship between the charge number and the window width of the OMIT is investigated and the feasibility of the scheme is justified by numerical simulation using currently available experimental values.

Preparation of NOON State Induced by Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling in an Ising Chain

In this brief report, we propose a possible way, theoretically and experimentally, to generate a NOON state of the two degenerate ferromagnetic ground states of the Transverse Ising Model. In our scheme we employ the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) effect between the two degenerate ferromagnetic ground states to realize the NOON state. Our calculation about the MQT process is based on a higher-order degenerate perturbation method. After doing a transformation, the MQT process could also be treated as the hopping of individual virtual fermions in the spin chain, which will leads to an analytical description of tunneling process. The experimental feasibility for generating the NOON state is discussed in the setup of linear ion trap.

Multi-ion Mach-Zehnder interferometer with artificial nonlinear interactions

We show how to implement a Mach-Zehnder interferometry based upon a string of trapped ions with artificial nonlinear interactions. By adiabatically sweeping down/up the coupling strength between two involved internal states of the ions, we could achieve the beam splitting/recombination. Based on current techniques for manipulating trapped ions, we discuss the experimental feasibility of our scheme and analyze some undesired uncertainty under realistic experimental environment.

No spin-localization phase transition in the spin-boson model without local field

We explore the spin-boson model in a special case, i.e., with zero local field. In contrast to previous studies, we find no possibility for quantum phase transition (QPT) happening between the localized and delocalized phases, and the behavior of the model can be fully characterized by the even or odd parity as well as the parity breaking, instead of the QPT, owned by the ground state of the system. Our analytical treatment about the eigensolution of the ground state of the model presents for the first time a rigorous proof of no-degeneracy for the ground state of the model, which is independent of the bath type, the degrees of freedom of the bath and the calculation precision. We argue that the QPT mentioned previously appears due to unreasonable treatment of the ground state of the model or of the infrared divergence existing in the spectral functions for Ohmic and sub-Ohmic dissipations.

Adiabatic Mach-Zehnder interferometer via an array of trapped ions

We explore the possibility of implementing a Heisenberg-limited Mach-Zehnder interferometry via an array of trapped ions, which obey a quantum Ising model within a transverse field. Based upon adiabatic processes of increasing the Ising interaction and then decreasing the transverse field, we demonstrate a perfect transition from paramagnetism to ferromagnetic states, which can be used as the beam splitter for the multi-ion Mach-Zehnder interferometry. The achieved NOON state of the ions enables the Heisenberg-limited interferometry. Using currently available techniques for ultracold ions, we discuss the experimental feasibility of our scheme with global operations.

Parity breaking and scaling behavior in the spin-boson model

We study the breaking of parity in the spin-boson model and demonstrate unique scaling behavior of the magnetization and entanglement around the critical points for the parity breaking after suppressing the infrared divergence existing inherently in the spectral functions for Ohmic and sub-Ohmic dissipations. Our treatment is basically analytical and of generality for all types of the bath. We argue that the conventionally employed spectral function is not fully reasonable and the previous justification of quantum phase transition for localization needs to be more seriously reexamined.

The vacuum induced Berry phase beyond rotating-wave approximation

With reference to the vacuum induced Berry phase (VIBP) obtained in the interaction of a spin-1/2 particle with quantized irradiation field under rotating-wave approximation (RWA), we present completely different treatment for the VIBP by a fully quantum mechanical treatment beyond the RWA, which gives a new definition of the VIBP and indicates the validity of RWA to be relevant not only to the energy conservation and comparison of characteristic parameters, but also to more subtle physics, such as the geometric property of the state evolution. Our result is of conceptual importance and also of significant relevance to quantum information processing.

Quantum Algorithms of Solving the Backtracking of One-dimensional Cellular Automata

In [Wolfram 1982; Wolfram 1983; Wolfram 2002], the backtracking of one-dimensional cellular automata is to find out which of the 2n possible initial configurations of width n evolve to a specific configuration. In this paper, in one-dimensional cellular automata for a specific configuration of width n, its unique initial configuration can be found by mean of the proposed quantum algorithm with polynomial quantum gates, polynomial quantum bits and the successful probability that is the same as that of Shor's quantum order-finding algorithm in [Shor 1994].

Quantum gates using electronic and nuclear spins of Yb$^{+}$ in a magnetic field gradient

An efficient scheme is proposed to carry out gate operations on an array of trapped Yb$^+$ ions, based on a previous proposal using both electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in a magnetic field gradient. For this purpose we consider the Paschen-Back regime (strong magnetic field) and employ a high-field approximation in this treatment. We show the possibility to suppress the unwanted coupling between the electron spins by appropriately swapping states between electronic and nuclear spins. The feasibility of generating the required high magnetic field is discussed.
