Discriminants of cubic curves and determinantal representations

The discriminant of a smooth plane cubic curve over the complex numbers can be written as a product of theta functions. This provides an important connection between algebraic and analytic objects. In this paper, we perform a new approach to obtain this classical result by using determinantal representations. More precisely, one can represent a non-singular cubic form as the determinant of a matrix whose elements are linear forms. Theta functions naturally appear in this representation and thus in the discriminant of the cubic.

Invariants of models of genus one curves and modular forms

An invariant of a model of genus one curve is a polynomial in the coefficients of the model that is stable under certain linear transformations. The classical example of an invariant is the discriminant, which characterizes the singularity of models. The ring of invariants of genus one models over a field is generated by two elements. Fisher normalized these invariants for models of degree n=2,3,4 in such a way that these invariants are moreover defined over the integers. We provide an alternative way to express these normalized invariants using modular forms. This method relies on a direct computation for the discriminants based on their own geometric properties.

Counting rational points on smooth cubic curves

We use a global version of Heath-Brown's $p-$adic determinant method developed by Salberger to give upper bounds for the number of rational points of height at most $B$ on non-singular cubic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. The bounds are uniform in the sense that they only depend on the rank of the corresponding Jacobian.
