CFOs Meet LLMs

Business sentiment is a closely watched economic signal, but measuring it is slow and costly: surveys reach only a few hundred firms, arrive periodically, and take time to compile. We show that large language models hold the potential to address these shortcomings. We prompt an LLM to role-play as the CFO of a specific company at a specific date and focus on the economic-optimism question on the Duke-Federal Reserve CFO Survey over 2002-2025. We find that the LLM reproduces individual human responses: the predicted optimism score significantly forecasts the CFO's actual answer, surviving firm and year-quarter fixed effects and a control for the most recent prior response. Predictive accuracy increases with the amount of information supplied, as both respondent history and firm characteristics improve fit, and the relationship persists under quarterly aggregation. With appropriate conditioning, LLMs may be able to serve as credible digital twins of executives, offering scalable, high-frequency expectations data for financial research and policy.

Do Activists Align with Larger Mutual Funds?

This paper demonstrates that hedge funds tend to design their activist campaigns to align with the preferences and ideologies of institutions holding large stakes in the target company. I estimate these preferences by analyzing the institutions' previous proxy voting behavior. The results reveal that activists benefit from this approach. Campaigns with a stronger positive correlation between the preferences of larger institutions and activist communications attract more shareholder attention, receive more votes, and are more likely to succeed.

Generative AI, Managerial Expectations, and Economic Activity

We use generative AI to extract managerial expectations about their economic outlook from 120,000+ corporate conference call transcripts. The resulting AI Economy Score predicts GDP growth, production, and employment up to 10 quarters ahead, beyond existing measures like survey forecasts. Moreover, industry and firm-level measures provide valuable information about sector-specific and individual firm activities. A composite measure that integrates managerial expectations about firm, industry, and macroeconomic conditions further significantly improves the forecasting power and predictive horizon of national and sectoral growth. Our findings show managerial expectations offer unique insights into economic activity, with implications for both macroeconomic and microeconomic decision-making.

ChatGPT and Corporate Policies

We create a firm-level ChatGPT investment score, based on conference calls, that measures managers' anticipated changes in capital expenditures. We validate the score with interpretable textual content and its strong correlation with CFO survey responses. The investment score predicts future capital expenditure for up to nine quarters, controlling for Tobin's $q$ and other determinants, implying the investment score provides incremental information about firms' future investment opportunities. The investment score also separately forecasts future total, intangible, and R\&D investments. Consistent with theoretical predictions, high-investment-score firms experience significant positive short-term returns upon disclosure, and negative long-run future abnormal returns. We demonstrate ChatGPT's applicability to measure other policies, such as dividends and employment.

Planning a Cost-Effective Delay-Constrained Passive Optical Network for 5G Fronthaul

With the rapid growth in the telecommunications industry moving towards 5G and beyond (5GB) and the emergence of data-hungry and time-sensitive applications, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are faced with a considerable challenge to keep up with these new demands. Cloud radio access network (CRAN) has emerged as a cost-effective architecture that improves 5GB performance. The fronthaul segment of the CRAN necessitates a high-capacity and low-latency connection. Optical technologies presented by Passive Optical Networks (PON) have gained attention as a promising technology to meet the fronthaul challenges. In this paper, we proposed an Integer Linear Program (ILP) that optimizes the total cost of ownership (TCO) for 5G using CRAN architecture under different delay thresholds. We considered the Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network (TWDM-PON) as a fronthaul with different splitting ratios.
