Electrostatic effects in nano-reactor-confined charge regulated macroions

We formulate a thermodynamic model of a nano-reactor containing charge-regulated macroions within an electrolyte-permeable enclosure. The model is then formalized within the Poisson-Boltzmann electrostatics augmented by the consistent inclusion of the charge dissociation of molecular groups residing on the surface of the entrapped macroions via charge regulation formalism. By solving the basic equilibrium equations in the linearized Debye-Hückel type approximation, we analyze the salient features of the inhomogeneous electrolyte distribution and macroion charge. We found that the surface charge asymmetry/symmetry of the macroions strongly affects the spatial profile of electrostatic potential. The effective screening length shows the non-monotonic behavior, arising from the complex interplay between the bathing external solution and macroion effective charges, which govern charge regulation equilibria. The total pressure at the nano-reactor enclosure boundary decreases monotonically as the enclosure radius and the ionic bulk salt concentration increase. Also, the resulting pressure is strongly influenced by the surface charge densities of the nano-reactor and the number of confined macroions.

Translocation of a daughter vesicle in a model system of self-reproducing vesicles

Translocation of a daughter vesicle from a mother vesicle through a pore is experimentally studied by many groups using a model system of self-reproducing vesicles. However, the theoretical formulation of the problem is not fully understood. In the present study, we present a theoretical formulation of the process based on our previous work [P. Khunpetch et al., Phys. Fluids 33, 077103 (2021)]. In our previous work, we considered the daughter vesicle as a rigid body. In the present work, however, we allow the daughter vesicle to deform during the expulsion process. We thus derive the free energy constituting of the elastic moduli of both the mother and daughter vesicles, and of pressure-driven contribution. The minimum energy path of the translocation is searched by using the string method. Our improved model successfully suggests the disappearance of the energy barrier where all the elastic moduli are in agreement with the experimental reports, while the previous work is unsuccessful to do so. The equations of motion of the daughter vesicle have been derived within the framework of the Onsager principle. We found that the translocation time of the daughter vesicle can be reduced when the pressure inside the mother vesicle increases, or the initial size of the daughter vesicle decreases.

Dissipation of traffic congestion using agent-based car-following model with modified optimal velocity

We investigate dynamical properties of traffic flow using the stochastic car-following model with modified optimal velocity on circular road. The safety distance following the two-second rule and autonomous vehicles, acting as agents, obeying simple requirements are incorporated into the model. The dynamic safety distance increases in a light traffic condition where the average driving velocity is high, while decreases in a dense traffic condition in anticipation of slower traffic motion. The results show that the presence of the agents can enhance overall velocity and traffic current of the system, and postpone the traffic congestion. In a particular phase region, imposing a speed limit enables the system to leave the congested flow phase. The density-dependent speed limit in agent-free condition is obtained to achieve the optimal traffic flow.
