Nonabelian Berry Phases in Baryons

We show how generic nonabelian gauge fields can be induced in baryons when a hierarchy of fast degrees of freedom is integrated out. We identify them with nonabelian Berry potentials and discuss their role in transmuting quantum numbers in bag and soliton models of baryons. The resulting baryonic spectra for both light and heavy quark systems are generic and resemble closely the excitation spectrum of diatomic molecules. The symmetry restoration in the system, i.e., the electronic rotational invariance in diatomic molecules, the heavy-quark symmetry in heavy baryons etc. is interpreted in terms of the vanishing of nonabelian Berry potentials that otherwise govern the hyperfine splitting.

Heavy-Quark Baryons as Skyrmions

I discuss recent development on the description of heavy-quark (such as charmed and bottom) baryons as one or more heavy mesons "wrapped" by a skyrmion. Amazingly enough, such a description naturally arises when light-quark chiral symmetry and heavy-quark spin symmetry are incorporated in an effective Lagrangian. I interpret the resulting spectrum in terms of nonabelian induced (Berry) potentials in analogy to diatomic molecular systems.

Nuclear Axial-Charge Transitions in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We develop a systematic chiral perturbation expansion for the calculation of meson-exchange currents in nuclei and apply the formalism to nuclear axial currents. We summarize the principal results of such a calculation to one loop order on nuclear axial-charge transitions which provides a strong support to the conjecture of ``chiral filter phenomenon" in nuclear medium. The use of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory enables us to obtain a remarkably simple result valid next to the leading order in chiral counting. The dominant role of a soft-pion exchange in axial-charge transitions in heavy nuclei is confirmed. An important, {\it albeit} indirect, consequence of our result on the empirically observed enhancement in axial-charge transitions in heavy nuclei is pointed out.

Rotation Symmetry and Nonabelian Berry Potential

We study the role of rotational symmetry in the systems where nonabelian Berry potentials emerge as a result of integrating out fast degrees of freedom. The conserved angular momentum is constructed in the presence of a non-abelian Berry potential, which is formulated using Grassmann variables. The modifications on conventional angular momentum are discussed in close analogy with monopole systems. The diatomic molecular system discussed by Zygelman is found to have a similar structure to that of a non-abelian $SU(2)$ charge coupled to a 't Hooft - Polyakov monopole. The abelian limit of the Berry potential in diatomic systems is shown to be the same as $U(1)$ monopole and in a large separation limit, we observe the decoupling associated with a vanishing field tensor.
