Response function analysis of excited-state kinetic energy functional constructed by splitting k-space

Over the past decade, fundamentals of time independent density functional theory for excited state have been established. However, construction of the corresponding energy functionals for excited states remains a challenging problem. We have developed a method for constructing functionals for excited states by splitting k-space according to the occupation of orbitals. In this paper we first show the accuracy of kinetic energy functional thus obtained. We then perform a response function analysis of the kinetic energy functional proposed by us and show why method of splitting the k-space could be the method of choice for construction of energy functionals for excited states.

Is it possible to construct excited-state energy functionals by splitting k-space?

We show that our procedure of constructing excited-state energy functionals by splitting k-space, employed so far to obtain exchange energies of excited-states, is quite general. We do so by applying the same method to construct modified Thomas-Fermi kinetic energy functional and its gradient expansion up to the second order for the excited-states. We show that the resulting kinetic energy functional has the same accuracy for the excited-states as the ground-state functionals do for the ground-states.

Comparison of van der Waals coefficient C$_{6}$ of sodium clusters obtained via spherical jellium background model and all-electron ab-initio method

In this paper we employ two distinct approaches - all-electron \textit{ab initio} method and the spherical jellium background model- within time dependent density functional theory to calculate the long range dipole-dipole dispersion coefficient (van der Waals coefficient) $C_{6}$ of sodium atom clusters containing even number of atoms ranging from 2 to 20 atoms. The dispersion coefficients are obtained via Casimir-Polder relation. All the calculations are carried out with local density approximation for exchange-correlation energy functional. These two sets of results are compared to assess the accuracy of jellium based results and to ascertain the effect of detail ionic structure of the clusters on the van der Waals coefficient.

Analysis of Floquet formulation of time-dependent density-functional theory

Floquet formulation of time-dependent density-functional theory is revisited in light of its recent criticism [Maitra and Burke, Chem. Phys. Lett. 359 (2002), 237]. It is shown that Floquet theory is well founded and its criticism has overlooked important points of both the Runge-Gross formalism and Floquet formulation itself. We substantiate our analysis by examples similar to that considered by Maitra and Burke.

Density-to-potential map in time-independent excited-state density-functional theory

In light of the recent work by Sahni et al., Harbola, and Gaudoin and Burke, the question of mapping from an excited-state density of a many-electron interacting system to the potential of the related non-interacting system is analyzed. To do so, we investigate the Levy-Nagy criterion quantitatively for several excited-states. Our work indicates that Levy-Nagy criterion may fix the density to potential map uniquely.

Exploring Foundations of Time-Independent Density Functional Theory for Excited-States

Based on the work of Gorling and that of Levy and Nagy, density-functional formalism for many Fermionic excited-states is explored through a careful and rigorous analysis of the excited-state density to external potential mapping. It is shown that the knowledge of the ground-state density is a must to fix the mapping from an excited-state density to the external potential. This is the excited-state counterpart of the Hohenberg-Kohn theorem, where instead of the ground-state density the density of the excited-state gives the true many-body wavefunctions of the system. Further, the excited-state Kohn-Sham system is defined by comparing it's non-interacting kinetic energy with the true kinetic energy. The theory is demonstrated by studying a large number of atomic systems.

An accurate exchange energy functional in excited-state density functional theory

An exchange energy functional is proposed and tested for obtaining a class of excited-state energies using density-functional formalism. The functional is the excited-state counterpart of the local-density approximation functional for the ground-state. It takes care of the state-dependence of the energy functional and leads to highly accurate excitation energies.

Calculation of van der Walls coefficients of alkali metal clusters by hydrodynamic approach to time-dependent density-functional theory

In this paper we employ the hydrodynamic formulation of time-dependent density functional theory to obtain the van der Waal coefficients $C_{6}$ and $C_{8}$ of alkali-metal clusters of various sizes including very large clusters. Such calculation becomes computationally very demanding in the orbital-based Kohn-Sham formalism, but quite simple in the hydrodynamic approach. We show that for interactions between the clusters of same sizes, $C_{6}$ and $C_{8}$ sale as the sixth and the eighth power of the cluster radius rsepectively, and approach the respective classically predicted values for the large size clusters.

Shallow Deep Transitions of Neutral and Charged Donor States in Semiconductor Quantum Dots

We carry out a detailed investigation of neutral ($D^0$) and charged ($D^-$) impurity states of hydrogen-like donors in spherical semiconductor quantum dots. The investigation is carried out within the effective mass theory (EMT). We take recourse to local density approximation (LDA) and the Harbola-Sahni (HS) schemes for treating many-body effects. We experiment with a variety of confining potentials: square, harmonic and triangular. We observe that the donor level undergoes shallow to deep transition as the dot radius ($R$) is reduced. On further reduction of the dot radius it becomes shallow again. We term this non-monotonic behaviour \textbf{SHADES}. This suggests the possibility of carrier {\textbf{\textit{``freeze out''}}} for both $D^0$ and $D^-$. Further, our study of the optical gaps also reveals a {\textbf{SHADES}} transition.

Frequency dependent hyperpolarizabilities of atoms; calculations using density-functional theory

Using the orbitals generated by the van Leeuwen-Baerends potential, we calculate frequency dependent response properties of noble gas atoms of He, Ne and Ar and alkaline earth atoms Be and Mg, with particlar emphasis on their nonlinear polarizabilities. For this we employ time-dependent Kohn-Sham formalism with adiabatic local-density aproximation (ALDA) for exchange and correlation. We show that results thus obtained for frequency dependent polarizabilities of the inert gas atoms are highly acurate. On the other hand, polarizabilities of the alkaline earths are not given with the same accuracy. In light of this, we make an assessment of ALDA for obtaining linear and nonlinear response properties by employing time-dependent density-functional theory.

Hydrodynamic approach to TDDFT; response properties of metal clusters

Performing electronic structure calculations for large systems, such as nanoparticles or metal clusters, via orbital based Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham theories is computationaly demanding. To study such systems, therefore, we have taken recourse to the hydrodynaic approach to time-dependent density functonal theory. In this paper we develop variation-perturbation method within this theory in terms of the particle and the current densities of a system. We then apply this to study the linear and nnlinear resonse properties of alkali metal clusters within spherical jellium backgrond model.

Atomic Compton profiles within different exchange-only theories

The Impulse Compton Profiles (CP's) J(q) and the - expectation values for some inert gas atoms (He-Kr) are computed and compared within the Harbola-Sahni (HS), Hartree-Fock(HF) theories and a Self Interaction Corrected (SIC) density functional model. The Compton profiles for excited states of Helium atom are also calculated. While the calculated CP's are found to generally agree, they differ slightly from one another for small values of the Compton parameter q and are in good agreement for large q values. The expectation values within the three theories are also found to be comparable. The HS formalism seem to mimic HF reasonably well in the momentum space, establishing the logical consistency of the former.
