Space, matter and topology

An old branch of mathematics, Topology, has opened the road to the discovery of new phases of matter. A hidden topology in the energy spectrum is the key for novel conducting/insulating properties of topological matter.

Supersymmetry: Boundary Conditions and Edge States

When spatial boundaries are inserted, SUSY can be broken. We show that in an $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric theory, all the boundary conditions allowed by self-adjointness of the Hamiltonian break $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY while only a few of these boundary conditions preserve $\mathcal{N}=1$ SUSY. We also show that for a subset of the boundary conditions compatible with $\mathcal{N}=1$ SUSY, there exist fermionic ground states which are localized near the boundary.

A dynamical composition law for boundary conditions

We analyze the quantum dynamics of a non-relativistic particle moving in a bounded domain of physical space, when the boundary conditions are rapidly changed. In general, this yields new boundary conditions, via a dynamical composition law that is a very simple instance of superposition of different topologies. In all cases unitarity is preserved and the quick change of boundary conditions does not introduce any decoherence in the system. Among the emerging boundary conditions, the Dirichlet case (vanishing wave function at the boundary) plays the role of an attractor. Possible experimental implementations with superconducting quantum interference devices are explored and analyzed.

Vacuum stress-tensor in SSB theories

The renormalized energy-momentum tensor of vacuum has been deeply explored many years ago. The main result of these studies was that such a tensor should satisfy the conservation laws which reflects the covariance of the theory in the presence of loop corrections. In view of this general result we address two important questions, namely how to implement the momentum cut-off in a covariant way and whether this general result holds in the theory with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking. In the last case some new interesting details arise and although the calculations are more involved we show that the final result satisfies the conservation laws.

Theta-vacuum and large N limit in CP^{N-1} sigma models

The theta dependence of the vacuum energy density in CP^{N-1} models is re-analysed in the semiclassical approach, the 1/N expansion and arguments based on the nodal structure of vacuum wavefunctionals. The 1/N expansion is shown not to be in contradiction with instanton physics at finite (spacetime) volume V. The interplay of large volume V and large N parameter gives rise to two regimes with different theta dependence, one behaving as a dilute instanton gas and the other dominated by the traditional large N picture, where instantons reappear as resonances of the one-loop effective action, even in the absence of regular instantonic solutions. The realms of the two regimes are given in terms of the mass gap m by m^2 V << N and m^2 V >> N, respectively. The small volume regime m^2 V << N is relevant for physical effects associated to the physics of the boundary, like the leading role of edge states in the quantum Hall effect, which, however, do not play any role in the thermodynamic limit at large N. Depending on the order in which the limits N -> \infty and V -> \infty are taken, two different theories are obtained; this is the hallmark of a phase transition at 1/N = 0.

Extremal Black Brane Attractors on The Elliptic Curve

Reconsidering the analysis of the moduli space of N=2 eight dimensional supergravity coupled to seven scalars, we propose a new scalar manifold factorization given by \frac{\textsc {SO(2,2)}}{\textsc{SO(2)}\times {\textsc{SO(2)}}}\times \frac{\textsc{SO(2,1)}}{\textsc{SO(2)}}\times \textsc {SO(1,1)}. This factorization is supported by the appearance of three solutions of Type IIA extremal black p-branes (p=0,1,2) with AdS_{p+2}\times S^{6-p} near-horizon geometries in eight dimensions. We analyze the corresponding attractor mechanism. In particular, we give an interplay between the scalar manifold factors and the extremal black p-brane charges. Then we show that the dilaton can be stabilized by the dyonic black 2-brane charges.

Chern-Simons theory and BCS superconductivity

We study the relationship between the holomorphic unitary connection of Chern-Simons theory with temporal Wilson lines and the Richardson's exact solution of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian. We derive the integrals of motion of the BCS model, their eigenvalues and eigenvectors as a limiting case of the Chern-Simons theory.
