Evaluating TQFT invariants from G-crossed braided spherical fusion categories via Kirby diagrams with 3-handles

A family of TQFTs parametrised by G-crossed braided spherical fusion categories has been defined recently as a state sum model and as a Hamiltonian lattice model. Concrete calculations of the resulting manifold invariants are scarce because of the combinatorial complexity of triangulations, if nothing else. Handle decompositions, and in particular Kirby diagrams are known to offer an economic and intuitive description of 4-manifolds. We show that if 3-handles are added to the picture, the state sum model can be conveniently redefined by translating Kirby diagrams into the graphical calculus of a G-crossed braided spherical fusion category. This reformulation is very efficient for explicit calculations, and the manifold invariant is calculated for several examples. It is also shown that in most cases, the invariant is multiplicative under connected sum, which implies that it does not detect exotic smooth structures.

Dichromatic state sum models for four-manifolds from pivotal functors

A family of invariants of smooth, oriented four-dimensional manifolds is defined via handle decompositions and the Kirby calculus of framed link diagrams. The invariants are parameterised by a pivotal functor from a spherical fusion category into a ribbon fusion category. A state sum formula for the invariant is constructed via the chain-mail procedure, so a large class of topological state sum models can be expressed as link invariants. Most prominently, the Crane-Yetter state sum over an arbitrary ribbon fusion category is recovered, including the nonmodular case. It is shown that the Crane-Yetter invariant for nonmodular categories is stronger than signature and Euler invariant. A special case is the four-dimensional untwisted Dijkgraaf-Witten model. Derivations of state space dimensions of TQFTs arising from the state sum model agree with recent calculations of ground state degeneracies in Walker-Wang models. Relations to different approaches to quantum gravity such as Cartan geometry and teleparallel gravity are also discussed.

General Covariance and Background Independence in Quantum Gravity

The history of general relativity suggests that in absence of experimental data, constructing a theory on philosophical first principles can lead to a very useful theory as well as to ground-breaking insights about physical reality. The two related concepts of general covariance and background independence are some of these principles and play a central role in general relativity. A definition for them will be proposed and discussed. Constructing a theory of quantum gravity -- the sought-after unification of general relativity and quantum mechanics -- could profit from the same approach. Two popular research areas of quantum gravity, string theory and loop quantum gravity together with spin foams, are being examined whether they comply with these principles.
