Lie algebra representations and rigged Hilbert spaces: the SO(2) case

It is well known that related with the irreducible representations of the Lie group $SO(2)$ we find a discrete basis as well a continuous one. In this paper we revisited this situation under the light of Rigged Hilbert spaces, which are the suitable framework to deal with both discrete and bases in the same context and in relation with physical applications.

An efficient implementation of the Hill-Harmonic Balance method to obtain Floquet exponents and solutions for homogeneous linear periodic differential equations

We propose an implementation of a method based on Fourier analysis to obtain the Floquet characteristic exponents for periodic homogeneous linear systems, which shows a high precision. This implementation uses a variational principle to find the correct Floquet exponents among the solutions of an algebraic equation. Once we have these Floquet exponents, we determine explicit approximated solutions. We test our results on systems for which exact solutions are known to verify the accuracy of our method. Using the equivalent linear system, we also study approximate solutions for homogeneous linear equations with periodic coefficients.

One-Dimensional Semirelativistic Hamiltonian with Multiple Dirac Delta Potentials

In this paper, we consider the one-dimensional semirelativistic Schrödinger equation for a particle interacting with $N$ Dirac delta potentials. Using the heat kernel techniques, we establish a resolvent formula in terms of an $N \times N$ matrix, called the principal matrix. This matrix essentially includes all the information about the spectrum of the problem. We study the bound state spectrum by working out the eigenvalues of the principal matrix. With the help of the Feynman-Hellmann theorem, we analyze how the bound state energies change with respect to the parameters in the model. We also prove that there are at most $N$ bound states and explicitly derive the bound state wave function. The bound state problem for the two-center case is particularly investigated. We show that the ground state energy is bounded below, and there exists a self-adjoint Hamiltonian associated with the resolvent formula. Moreover, we prove that the ground state is nondegenerate. The scattering problem for $N$ centers is analyzed by exactly solving the semirelativistic Lippmann-Schwinger equation. The reflection and the transmission coefficients are numerically and asymptotically computed for the two-center case. We observe the so-called threshold anomaly for two symmetrically located centers. The semirelativistic version of the Kronig-Penney model is shortly discussed, and the band gap structure of the spectrum is illustrated. The bound state and scattering problems in the massless case are also discussed. Furthermore, the reflection and the transmission coefficients for the two delta potentials in this particular case are analytically found. Finally, we solve the renormalization group equations and compute the beta function nonperturbatively.

The Infinite Square Well with a Point Interaction: A Discussion on the Different Parametrizations

The construction of Dirac delta type potentials has been achieved with the use of the theory of self adjoint extensions of non-self adjoint formally Hermitian (symmetric) operators. The application of this formalism to investigate the possible self adjoint extensions of the one dimensional kinematic operator $K=-d^2/dx^2$ on the infinite square well potential is quite illustrative and has been given elsewhere. This requires the definition and use of four independent real parameters, which relate the boundary values of the wave functions at the walls. By means of a different approach, that fixes matching conditions at the origin for the wave functions, it is possible to define a perturbation of the type $aδ(x)+bδ'(x)$, thus depending on two parameters, on the infinite square well. The objective of this paper is to investigate whether these two approaches are compatible in the sense that perturbations like $aδ(x)+bδ'(x)$ can be fixed and determined using the first approach.

The one dimensional infinite square well with variable mass

We introduce a numerical method to obtain approximate eigenvalues for some problems of Sturm-Liouville type. As an application, we consider an infinite square well in one dimension in which the mass is a function of the position. Two situations are studied, one in which the mass is a differentiable function of the position depending on a parameter $b$. In the second one the mass is constant except for a discontinuity at some point. When the parameter $b$ goes to infinity, the function of the mass converges to the situation described in the second case. One shows that the energy levels vary very slowly with $b$ and that in the limit as $b$ goes to infinity, we recover the energy levels for the second situation.

Time Asymmetric Quantum Mechanics

The meaning of time asymmetry in quantum physics is discussed. On the basis of a mathematical theorem, the Stone--von Neumann theorem, the solutions of the dynamical equations, the Schrödinger equation (1) for states or the Heisenberg equation (6a) for observables are given by a unitary group. Dirac kets require the concept of a RHS (rigged Hilbert space) of Schwartz functions; for this kind of RHS a mathematical theorem also leads to time symmetric group evolution. Scattering theory suggests to distinguish mathematically between states (defined by a preparation apparatus) and observables (defined by a registration apparatus (detector)). If one requires that scattering resonances of width $Γ$ and exponentially decaying states of lifetime $τ=\frac{\hbar}Γ$ should be the same physical entities (for which there is sufficient evidence) one is led to a pair of RHS's of Hardy functions and connected with it, to a semigroup time evolution $t_{0}\leq t<\infty$, with the puzzling result that there is a quantum mechanical beginning of time, just like the big bang time for the universe, when it was a quantum system. The decay of quasi-stable particles is used to illustrate this quantum mechanical time asymmetry. From the analysis of these processes, we show that the properties of rigged Hilbert spaces of Hardy functions are suitable for a formulation of time asymmetry in quantum mechanics.

Supersymmetry Transformations for Delta Potentials

We make a detailed study of the first and second-order SUSY partners of a one-dimensional free Hamiltonian with a singular perturbation proportional to a Dirac delta function. It is shown that the second-order transformations increase the spectral manipulation possibilities offered by the standard first-order supersymmetric quantum mechanics.

Measurements and confluence in quantum lambda calculi with explicit qubits

This paper demonstrates how to add a measurement operator to quantum lambda-calculi. A proof of the consistency of the semantics is given through a proof of confluence presented in a sufficiently general way to allow this technique to be used for other languages. The method described here may be applied to probabilistic rewrite systems in general, and to add measurement to more complex languages such as QML or Lineal, which is the subject of further research.

The role of self-induced decoherence in the problem of the classical limit of quantum mechanics

Our account of the problem of the classical limit of quantum mechanics involves two elements. The first one is self-induced decoherence, conceived as a process that depends on the own dynamics of a closed quantum system governed by a Hamiltonian with continuous spectrum; the study of decoherence is addressed by means of a formalism used to give meaning to the van Hove states with diagonal singularities. The second element is macroscopicity: when the macroscopic limit is applied to the Wigner transformation of the diagonal state resulting from decoherence, the description of the quantum system becomes equivalent to the description of an ensemble of classical trajectories on phase space weighted by their corresponding probabilities.
