Bidiagonal factorization of tetradiagonal matrices and Darboux transformations

Recently a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded lower Hessenberg matrices that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization was presented. These type of matrices are oscillatory. In this paper the Lima-Loureiro hypergeometric multiple orthogonal polynomials and the Jacobi-Piñeiro multiple orthogonal polynomials are discussed at the light of this bidiagonal factorization for tetradiagonal matrices. The Darboux transformations of tetradiagonal Hessenberg matrices is studied and Christoffel formulas for the elements of the bidiagonal factorization are given, i.e., the bidiagonal factorization is given in terms of the recursion polynomials evaluated at the origin.

Positive bidiagonal factorization of tetradiagonal Hessenberg matrices

Recently a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded lower Hessenberg matrices that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization was presented. In this paper conditions, in terms of continued fractions, for an oscillatory tetradiagonal Hessenberg matrix to have such positive bidiagonal factorization are found. Oscillatory tetradiagonal Toeplitz matrices are taken as a case study of matrix that admits a positive bidiagonal factorization. Moreover, it is proved that oscillatory banded Hessenberg matrices are organized in rays, with the origin of the ray not having the positive bidiagonal factorization and all the interior points of the ray having such positive bidiagonal factorization.

Multiple orthogonal polynomials: Pearson equations and Christoffel formulas

Multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to two weights on the step-line are considered. A connection between different dual spectral matrices, one banded (recursion matrix) and one Hessenberg, respectively, and the Gauss-Borel factorization of the moment matrix is given. It is shown a hidden freedom exhibited by the spectral system related to the multiple orthogonal polynomials. Pearson equations are discussed, a Laguerre-Freud matrix is considered, and differential equations for type I and II multiple orthogonal polynomials, as well as for the corresponding linear forms are given. The Jacobi-Piñeiro multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I and type II are used as an illustrating case and the corresponding differential relations are presented. A permuting Christoffel transformation is discussed, finding the connection between the different families of multiple orthogonal polynomials. The Jacobi-Piñeiro case provides a convenient illustration of these symmetries, giving linear relations between different polynomials with shifted and permuted parameters. We also present the general theory for the perturbation of each weight by a different polynomial or rational function aka called Christoffel and Geronimus transformations. The connections formulas between the type II multiple orthogonal polynomials, the type I linear forms, as well as the vector Stieltjes-Markov vector functions is also presented. We illustrate these findings by analyzing the special case of modification by an even polynomial.

Matrix Jacobi Biorthogonal Polynomials via Riemann-Hilbert problem

We consider matrix orthogonal polynomials related to Jacobi type matrices of weights that can be defined in terms of a given matrix Pearson equation. Stating a Riemann-Hilbert problem we can derive first and second order differential relations that these matrix orthogonal polynomials and the second kind functions associated to them verify. For the corresponding matrix recurrence coefficients, non-Abelian extensions of a family of discrete Painlevé d-PIV equations are obtained for the three term recurrence relation coefficients.

Hypergeometric Multiple Orthogonal Polynomials and Random Walks

The recently found hypergeometric multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line by Lima and Loureiro are shown to be random walk polynomials. It is proven that the corresponding Jacobi matrix and its transpose, which are nonnegative matrices and describe higher recurrence relations, can be normalized to two stochastic matrices, dual to each other. Using the Christoffel-Darboux formula on the step-line and the Poincaré theory for non-homogeneous recurrence relations it is proven that both stochastic matrices are related by transposition in the large $n$ limit. These random walks are beyond birth and death, as they describe a chain in where transitions to the two previous states are allowed, or in the dual to the two next states. The corresponding Karlin-McGregor representation formula is given for these new Markov chains. The regions of hypergeometric parameters where the Markov chains are recurrent or transient are given. Stochastic factorizations, in terms of pure birth and of pure death factors, for the corresponding Markov matrices of types I and II, are provided.Twelve uniform Jacobi matrices and the corresponding random walks, related to a Jacobi matrix of Toeplitz type, and theirs stochastic or semi-stochastic matrices (with sinks and sources), that describe Markov chains beyond birth and death, are found and studied. One of these uniform stochastic cases, which is a recurrent random walk, is the only hypergeometric multiple random walk having a uniform stochastic factorization. The corresponding weights, Jacobi and Markov transition matrices and sequences of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials are provided. Chain of Christoffel transformations connecting the stochastic uniform tuples between them, and the semi-stochastic uniform tuples, between them, are presented.

Pearson Equations for Discrete Orthogonal Polynomials: I. Generalized Hypergeometric Functions and Toda Equations

The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is applied to discrete orthogonal polynomials on the homogeneous lattice. In particular, semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials, which are built in terms of a discrete Pearson equation, are studied. The Laguerre-Freud structure semi-infinite matrix that models the shifts by $\pm 1$ in the independent variable of the set of orthogonal polynomials is introduced. In the semiclassical case it is proven that this Laguerre-Freud matrix is banded. From the well known fact that moments of the semiclassical weights are logarithmic derivatives of generalized hypergeometric functions, it is shown how the contiguous relations for these hypergeometric functions translate as symmetries for the corresponding moment matrix. It is found that the 3D Nijhoff-Capel discrete Toda lattice describes the corresponding contiguous shifts for the squared norms of the orthogonal polynomials. The continuous Toda for these semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials is discussed and the compatibility equations are derived. It also shown that the Kadomtesev-Petvishvilii equation is connected to an adequate deformed semiclassical discrete weight, but in this case the deformation do not satisfy a Pearson equation.

Multiple Orthogonal Polynomials and Random Walks

Given a non-negative Jacobi matrix describing higher order recurrence relations for multiple orthogonal polynomials of type~II and corresponding linear forms of type I, a general strategy for constructing a pair of stochastic matrices, dual to each other, is provided. The corresponding Markov chains (or 1D random walks) allow, in one transition, to reach for the N-th previous states, to remain in the state or reach for the immediately next state. The dual Markov chains allow, in one transition, to reach for the N-th next states, to remain in the state or reach for immediately previous state. The connection between both dual Markov chains is discussed at the light of the Poincaré's theorem on ratio asymptotics for homogeneous linear recurrence relations and the Christoffel-Darboux formula within the sequence of multiple orthogonal polynomials and linear forms of type I. The Karlin-McGregor representation formula is extended to both dual random walks, and applied to the discussion of the corresponding generating functions and first-passage distributions. Recurrent or transient character of the Markov chain is discussed. Steady state and some conjectures on its existence and the relation with mass points are also given. The Jacobi-Piñeiro multiple orthogonal polynomials are taken as a case study of the described results. For the first time in the literature, an explicit formula for the type~I Jacobi--Piñeiro polynomials is determined. The region of parameters where the Markov chains are recurrent or transient is given, and it is conjectured that when recurrent, the Markov chains are null recurrent and, consequently, the expected return times are infinity. Examples of recurrent and transient Jacobi--Piñeiro random walks are constructed explicitly.

Revisiting Biorthogonal Polynomials. An $LU$ factorization discussion

The Gauss-Borel or $LU$ factorization of Gram matrices of bilinear forms is the pivotal element in the discussion of the theory of biorthogonal polynomials. The construction of biorthogonal families of polynomials and its second kind functions, of the spectral matrices modeling the multiplication by the independent variable $x$, the Christoffel-Darboux kernel and its projection properties, are discussed from this point of view. Then, the Hankel case is presented and different properties, specific of this case, as the three terms relations, Heine formulas, Gauss quadrature and the Christoffel-Darboux formula are given. The classical orthogonal polynomial of Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi type are discussed and characterized within this scheme. Finally, it is shown who this approach is instrumental in the derivation of Christoffel formulas for general Christoffel and Geronimus perturbations of the bilinear forms.

Riemann-Hilbert Problem for the Matrix Laguerre Biorthogonal Polynomials: Eigenvalue Problems and the Matrix Discrete Painlevé IV

In this paper the Riemann-Hilbert problem, with jump supported on a appropriate curve on the complex plane with a finite endpoint at the origin, is used for the study of corresponding matrix biorthogonal polynomials associated with Laguerre type matrices of weights ---which are constructed in terms of a given matrix Pearson equation. First and second order differential systems for the fundamental matrix, solution of the mentioned Riemann-Hilbert problem are derived. An explicit and general example is presented to illustrate the theoretical results of the work. Related matrix eigenvalue problems for second order matrix differential operators and non-Abelian extensions of a family of discrete Painlevé IV equations are discussed.

Matrix Biorthogonal Polynomials: eigenvalue problems and non-Abelian discrete Painlevé equations

In this paper we use the Riemann-Hilbert problem, with jumps supported on appropriate curves in the complex plane, for matrix biorthogonal polynomials and apply it to find Sylvester systems of differential equations for the orthogonal polynomials and its second kind functions as well. For this aim, Sylvester type differential Pearson equations for the matrix of weights are shown to be instrumental. Several applications are given, in order of increasing complexity. First, a general discussion of non-Abelian Hermite biorthogonal polynomials in the real line, understood as those whose matrix of weights is a solution of a Sylvester type Pearson equation with coefficients first order matrix polynomials, is given. All these is applied to the discussion of possible scenarios leading to eigenvalue problems for second order linear differential operators with matrix eigenvalues. Nonlinear matrix difference equations are discussed next. Firstly, for the general Hermite situation a general non linear relation (non trivial because the non commutativity features of the setting) for the recursion coefficients is gotten. In the next case of higher difficulty, degree two polynomials are allowed in the Pearson equation, but the discussion is simplified by considering only a left Pearson equation. In the case, the support of the measure is on an appropriate branch of an hyperbola. The recursion coefficients are shown to fulfill a non-Abelian extension of the alternate discrete Painlevé I equation. Finally, a discussion is given for the case of degree three polynomials as coefficients in the left Pearson equation characterizing the matrix of weights. However, for simplicity only odd polynomials are allowed. In this case, a new and more general matrix extension of the discrete Painlevé I equation is found.

Generalized Sobolev orthogonal polynomials, matrix moment problems and integrable systems

We introduce a large class of Sobolev bi-orthogonal polynomial sequences arising from a $LU$-factorizable moment matrix and associated with a suitable measure matrix that characterizes the Sobolev bilinear form. A theory of deformations of Sobolev bilinear forms is also proposed. We consider both polynomial deformations and a class of transformations related to the action of linear operators on the entries of a given bilinear form. Transformation formulae among new and old polynomial sequences are determined. Finally, integrable hierarchies of evolution equations arising from the factorization of a time deformation of the moment matrix are presented.

CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials. II: Christoffel formulas for Geronimus-Uvarov perturbations

This paper is a continuation of the recent paper "CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials: Christoffel formulas for Christoffel and Geronimus transformations" by the same authors. The behavior of quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane, characterized by bivariate linear functionals, and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families --including Sobolev and discrete Sobolev orthogonalities--- under two type of Geronimus--Uvarov transformations is studied. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial and divided by the complex conjugate of a Laurent polynomial, with the addition of appropriate masses (linear functionals supported on the zeros of the perturbing Laurent polynomial in the denominator) or vice-versa, multiplied by the complex conjugate of a Laurent polynomial and divided by a Laurent polynomial. The connection formulas for the CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials, their norms, and Christoffel--Darboux kernels are given. For prepared Laurent polynomials these connection formulas lead to quasideterminantal (quotient of determinants) Christoffel formulas expressing an arbitrary degree perturbed biorthogonal Laurent polynomial in terms of $2N_{\mathfrak C}+2N_Γ$ unperturbed biorthogonal Laurent polynomials, their second kind functions or Christoffel--Darboux kernel and its mixed versions. When the linear functionals are supported on the unit circle, a particularly relevant role is played by the reciprocal polynomial, and the Christoffel formulas provide now with two possible ways of expressing the same perturbed quantities in terms of the original ones, one using only the nonperturbed biorthogonal family of Laurent polynomials, and the other using the Christoffel--Darboux kernel and its mixed versions.

CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials: Christoffel formulas for Christoffel and Geronimus perturbations

Quasidefinite sesquilinear forms for Laurent polynomials in the complex plane and corresponding CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomial families are studied. Bivariate linear functionals encompass large families of orthogonalities like Sobolev and discrete Sobolev types. Two possible Christoffel transformations of these linear functionals are discussed. Either the linear functionals are multiplied by a Laurent polynomial, or are multiplied by the complex conjugate of a Laurent polynomial. For the Geronimus transformation, the linear functional is perturbed in two possible manners as well, by a division by a Laurent polynomial or by a complex conjugate of a Laurent polynomial, in both cases the addition of appropriate masses (linear functionals supported on the zeros of the perturbing Laurent polynomial) is considered. The connection formulas for the CMV biorthogonal Laurent polynomials, its norms, and Christoffel-Darboux kernels, in all the four cases, are given. For the Geronimus transformation, the connection formulas for the second kind functions and mixed Christoffel-Darboux kernels are also given in the two possible cases. For prepared Laurent polynomials, i.e. of the form $L(z)=L_nz^n+\cdots+L_{-n}z^{-n}$, $L_nL_{-n}\neq 0$, these connection formulas lead to quasideterminantal (quotient of determinants) Christoffel formulas for all the four transformations, expressing an arbitrary degree perturbed biorthogonal Laurent polynomial in terms of $2n$ unperturbed biorthogonal Laurent polynomials, their second kind functions or Christoffel-Darboux kernels and its mixed versions. The unit circle case, given its exceptional properties, is discussed in more detail.

Transformation theory and Christoffel formulas for matrix biorthogonal polynomials on the real line

In this paper transformations for matrix orthogonal polynomials in the real line are studied. The orthogonality is understood in a broad sense, and is given in terms of a nondegenerate continuous sesquilinear form, which in turn is determined by a quasidefinite matrix of bivariate generalized functions with a well defined support. The discussion of the orthogonality for such a sesquilinear form includes, among others, matrix Hankel cases with linear functionals, general matrix Sobolev orthogonality and discrete orthogonal polynomials with an infinite support. The first transformation considered is that of Geronimus type, two different methods are developed. A spectral one, based on the spectral properties of the perturbing polynomial, and constructed in terms of the second kind functions. Then, using spectral techniques and spectral jets, Christoffel-Geronimus formulas for the transformed polynomials and norms are presented. For this type of transformations, the paper also proposes an alternative method, which does not require of spectral techniques. A discussion on matrix spectral linear transformations is presented, as well. These transformations can be understood as rational perturbations of the matrix of bivariate generalized functions together with an addition of appropriate masses, determined these last ones by the spectral properties of the polynomial denominator. As for the Geronimus case, two techniques are applied, spectral and mixed spectral/nonspectral. Christoffel--Geronimus--Uvarov formulas are found with both approaches and some applications are given. The transformation theory is finally discussed in the context of the 2D non-Abelian Toda lattice and noncommutative KP hierarchies, understood as the theory of continuous transformations of quasidefinite sesquilinear forms. This approach allows for the finding of perturbed quasitau and Baker matrices.

Christoffel transformations for matrix orthogonal polynomials in the real line and the non-Abelian 2D Toda lattice hierarchy

Given a matrix polynomial $W(x)$, matrix bi-orthogonal polynomials with respect to the sesquilinear form $\langle P(x),Q(x)\rangle_W=\int P(x) W(x)\operatorname{d}μ(x)(Q(x))^{\top}$, $P(x),Q(x)\in\mathbb R^{p\times p}[x]$, where $μ(x)$ is a matrix of Borel measures supported in some infinite subset of the real line, are considered. Connection formulas between the sequences of matrix bi-orthogonal polynomials with respect to $\langle \cdot,\cdot\rangle_W$ and matrix polynomials orthogonal with respect to $μ(x)$ are presented. In particular, for the case of nonsingular leading coefficients of the perturbation matrix polynomial $W(x)$ we present a generalization of the Christoffel formula constructed in terms of the Jordan chains of $W(x)$. For perturbations with a singular leading coefficient several examples by Durán et al are revisited. Finally, we extend these results to the non-Abelian 2D Toda lattice hierarchy.

Matrix biorthogonal polynomials in the unit circle: Riemann-Hilbert problem and matrix discrete Painleve II system

Matrix Szego biorthogonal polynomials for quasi-definite matrices of measures are studied. For matrices of Holder weights a Riemann-Hilbert problem is uniquely solved in terms of the matrix Szego polynomials and its Cauchy transforms. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is given as an appropriate framework for the discussion of the Szego matrix and the associated Szego recursion relations for the matrix orthogonal polynomials and its Cauchy transforms. Pearson type differential systems characterizing the matrix of weights are studied. These are linear systems of ordinary differential equations which are required to be monodromy free. Linear ordinary differential equations for the matrix Szego polynomials and its Cauchy transforms are derived. It is shown how these Pearson systems lead to nonlinear difference equations for the Verblunsky matrices and two examples, of Fuchsian and non-Fuchsian type, are considered. For both cases a new matrix version of the discrete Painlevé II equation for the Verblunsky matrices is found. Reductions of these matrix discrete Painleve II systems presenting locality are discussed.
