A majority gate with chiral magnetic solitons

In magnetic materials nontrivial spin textures may emerge owing to the competition among different types of magnetic interactions. Among such spin textures, chiral magnetic solitons represent topologically protected spin configurations with particle-like properties. Based on atomistic spin dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that these chiral magnetic solitons are ideal to use for logical operations, and we demonstrate the functionality of a three-input majority gate, in which the input states can be controlled by applying an external electromagnetic field or spin-polarized currents. One of the main advantages of the proposed device is that the input and output signals are encoded in the chirality of solitons, that may be moved, allowing to perform logical operations using only minute electric currents. As an example we illustrate how the three input majority gate can be used to perform logical relations, such as Boolean AND and OR.

Dynamical correlations in the electronic structure of BiFeO$_{3}$, as revealed by dynamical mean field theory

Using local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT), we have computed the valence band photoelectron spectra of highly popular multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$. Within DMFT, the local impurity problem is tackled by exact diagonalization (ED) solver. For comparison, we also present result from LDA+U approach, which is commonly used to compute physical properties of this compound. Our LDA+DMFT derived spectra match adequately with the experimental hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES) for Fe 3$d$ states, whereas the other theoretical method that we employed failed to capture the features of the measured spectra. Thus, our investigation shows the importance of accurately incorporating the dynamical aspects of electron-electron interaction among the Fe 3$d$ orbitals in calculations to produce the experimental excitation spectra, which establishes BiFeO$_{3}$ as a strongly correlated electron system. The LDA+DMFT derived density of states (DOSs) exhibit significant amount of Fe 3$d$ states at the energy of Bi lone-pairs, implying that the latter is not as alone as previously thought in the spectral scenario. Our study also demonstrates that the combination of orbital cross-sections for the constituent elements and broadening schemes for the calculated spectral function are pivotal to explain the detailed structures of the experimental spectra.

Exchange interactions of CaMnO3 in the bulk and at the surface

In this work, we present electronic and magnetic properties of CaMnO3 (CMO) as obtained from ab initio calculations. We identify the preferable magnetic order by means of density functional theory plus Hubbard U calculations and extract the effective exchange parameters (Jij's) using the magnetic force theorem. We find that the effects of geometrical relaxation at the surface as well as the change of crystal field are very strong and are able to influence the lower energy magnetic configuration. In particular, our analysis reveals that the exchange interaction between the Mn atoms belonging to the surface and the subsurface layers is very sensitive to the structural changes. An earlier study [A. Filippetti and W.E. Pickett, Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 4184 (1999)] suggested that this coupling is ferromagnetic and gives rise to the spin flip process on the surface of CMO. In our work we confirm their finding for an unrelaxed geometry, but once the structural relaxations are taken into account, this exchange coupling changes its sign. Thus, we suggest that the surface of CMO should have the same G-type antiferromagnetic order as in the bulk. Finally, we show that the suggested SF can be induced in the system by introducing an excess of electrons.

Magnetic moment of inertia within the breathing model

An essential property of magnetic devices is the relaxation rate in magnetic switching which strongly depends on the energy dissipation and magnetic inertia of the magnetization dynamics. Both parameters are commonly taken as a phenomenological entities. However very recently, a large effort has been dedicated to obtain Gilbert damping from first principles. In contrast, there is no ab initio study that so far has reproduced measured data of magnetic inertia in magnetic materials. In this letter, we present and elaborate on a theoretical model for calculating the magnetic moment of inertia based on the torque-torque correlation model. Particularly, the method has been applied to bulk bcc Fe, fcc Co and fcc Ni in the framework of the tight-binding approximation and the numerical values are comparable with recent experimental measurements. The theoretical results elucidate the physical origin of the moment of inertia based on the electronic structure. Even though the moment of inertia and damping are produced by the spin-orbit coupling, our analysis shows that they are caused by undergo different electronic structure mechanisms.

First principles studies of the Gilbert damping and exchange interactions for half-metallic Heuslers alloys

Heusler alloys have been intensively studied due to the wide variety of properties that they exhibit. One of these properties is of particular interest for technological applications, i.e. the fact that some Heusler alloys are half-metallic. In the following, a systematic study of the magnetic properties of three different Heusler families $\textrm{Co}_2\textrm{Mn}\textrm{Z}$, $\text{Co}_2\text{Fe}\text{Z}$ and $\textrm{Mn}_2\textrm{V}\textrm{Z}$ with $\text{Z}=\left(\text{Al, Si, Ga, Ge}\right)$ is performed. A key aspect is the determination of the Gilbert damping from first principles calculations, with special focus on the role played by different approximations, the effect that substitutional disorder and temperature effects. Heisenberg exchange interactions and critical temperature for the alloys are also calculated as well as magnon dispersion relations for representative systems, the ferromagnetic $\textrm{Co}_2\textrm{Fe}\textrm{Si}$ and the ferrimagnetic $\textrm{Mn}_2\textrm{V}\textrm{Al}$. Correlations effects beyond standard density-functional theory are treated using both the local spin density approximation including the Hubbard $U$ and the local spin density approximation plus dynamical mean field theory approximation, which allows to determine if dynamical self-energy corrections can remedy some of the inconsistencies which were previously reported for these alloys.

All-thermal switching of amorphous Gd-Fe alloys: analysis of structural properties and magnetization dynamics

In recent years, there has been an intense interest in understanding the microscopic mechanism of thermally induced magnetization switching driven by a femtosecond laser pulse. Most of the effort has been dedicated to periodic crystalline structures while the amorphous counterparts have been less studied. By using a multiscale approach, i.e. first-principles density functional theory combined with atomistic spin dynamics, we report here on the very intricate structural and magnetic nature of amorphous Gd-Fe alloys for a wide range of Gd and Fe atomic concentrations at the nanoscale level. Both structural and dynamical properties of Gd-Fe alloys reported in this work are in good agreement with previous experiments. We calculated the dynamic behavior of homogeneous and inhomogeneous amorphous Gd-Fe alloys and their response under the influence of a femtosecond laser pulse. In the homogeneous sample, the Fe sublattice switches its magnetization before the Gd one. However, the temporal sequence of the switching of the two sublattices is reversed in the inhomogeneous sample. We propose a possible explanation based on a mechanism driven by a combination of the Dzyaloshiskii-Moriya interaction and exchange frustration, modeled by an antiferromagnetic second-neighbour exchange interaction between Gd atoms in the Gd-rich region. We also report on the influence of laser fluence and damping effects in the all-thermal switching.

Topological excitations in a Kagomé magnet

It is shown here that a Kagomé magnet, with Heisenberg and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions causes non trivial topological and chiral magnetic properties. Chirality---that is, left or right handedness---is a very important concept in a broad range of scientific areas, and particularly, in condensed matter physics. Inversion symmetry breaking relates chirality with skyrmions, that are protected field configurations with particle-like and topological properties. Here, the reported numerical simulations and theoretical considerations reveal that the magnetic excitations of the Kagomé magnet can both be of regular bulk magnon character, as well as, having a non-trivial topological nature. We also find that under special circumstances, skyrmions emerge as excitations, having stability even at room temperature. Chiral magnonic edge states of a Kagomé magnet offer, in addition, a promising way to create, control and manipulate skyrmions. This has potential for applications in spintronics, magnonics and skyrmionics, i.e., for information storage or as logic devices based on the transportation and control of these particles. Collisions between these particle-like excitations are found to be elastic in the skyrmion-skyrmion channel, albeit without mass-conservation for an individual skyrmion. Skyrmion-antiskyrmion collisions are found to be more complex, where annihilation and creation of these objects have a distinct non-local nature.

Density functional study of the magnetic properties of $Bi_{4}Mn$ clusters: Discrepancy between theory and experiment

We have performed collinear and non collinear calculations on neutral Bi4Mn, and collinear ones on ionized Bi4Mn with charges +1 and -1 to find out why theoretical calculations will not predict the magnetic state found in the experiment. We have used the density functional theory to find a fit between the theoretical prediction of the magnetic moment with the experimental value. Our calculations have consisted in a structure search of local energy minima, and then a search of the magnetic lowest energy state for each resulting isomer. The geometry optimization found 3 local minima whose fundamental state is the doublet spin state, which could not be found in previous theoretical works, but they are higher in energy than the lowest-lying isomer by approximately 1.75 eV. This magnetic state could help understand the experiment. Calculations of non-collinear magnetic states for the Bi4Mn do not lower the total magnetic moment. We conclude arguing how the 3 isomers with doublet state could actually be the ones measured in the experiment.
