Controllability and Exponential Mixing in Singular Interacting Particle Systems

This article concerns interacting particle systems with singular kernels, driven either by degenerate deterministic controls or by degenerate decomposable noise. In the deterministic setting, we establish global exact controllability and a topologically robust property called solid controllability. Moreover, we prove a result that guarantees global approximate controllability with prescribed trajectories. For stochastic dynamics, we obtain ergodicity and exponential mixing by utilizing coupling and recurrence mechanisms based on controllability. Our approach exploits the singularity and applies to a broad class of models, including Biot-Savart, Coulomb, Riesz, and Yukawa interactions, as well as heterogeneous multi-species systems.

Approximate Tracking Controllability of Systems with Quadratic Nonlinearities

Given a finite-dimensional time continuous control system and $\varepsilon>0$, we address the question of the existence of controls that maintain the corresponding state trajectories in the $\varepsilon$-neighborhood of any prescribed path in the state space. We investigate this property, called approximate tracking controllability, for linear and quadratic time invariant systems. Concerning linear systems, our answers are negative: by developing a systematic approach, we demonstrate that approximate tracking controllability of the full state is impossible even in a certain weak sense, except for the trivial situation where the control space is isomorphic to the state space. Motivated by these negative findings for linear systems, we focus on nonlinear dynamics. In particular, we prove weak approximate tracking controllability on any time horizon for a general class of systems with arbitrary linear part and quadratic nonlinear terms. The considered weak notion of approximate tracking controllability involves the relaxation metric. We underline the relevance of this weak setting by developing applications to coupled systems (including motion planning problems) and by remarking obstructions that would arise for natural stronger norms. The exposed framework yields global results even if the uncontrolled dynamics might exhibit singularities in finite time.

Relaxation enhancement by controlling incompressible fluid flows

We propose a PDE-controllability based approach to the enhancement of diffusive mixing for passive scalar fields. Unlike in the existing literature, our relaxation enhancing fields are not prescribed $\textit{ab initio}$ at every time and at every point of the spatial domain. Instead, we prove that time-dependent relaxation enhancing vector fields can be obtained as $\textit{state trajectories of control systems described by the incompressible Euler equations}$ either driven by finite-dimensional controls or by controls localized in space. The main ingredient of our proof is a new approximate controllability theorem for the incompressible Euler equations on $\mathbb{T}^2$, ensuring the approximate tracking of the full state all over the considered time interval. Combining this with a continuous dependence result yields enhanced relaxation for the passive scalar field. Another essential tool in our analysis is the exact controllability of the incompressible Euler system driven by spatially localized forces.

Controllability of Boussinesq flows driven by finite-dimensional and physically localized forces

We show approximate controllability of Boussinesq flows in $\mathbb{T}^2 = \mathbb{R}^2 / 2\pi\mathbb{Z}^2$ driven by finite-dimensional controls that are supported in any fixed region $\omega \subset \mathbb{T}^2$. This addresses a Boussinesq version of a question by Agrachev and provides the first known example of incompressible fluids with this property. In this context, we complement results obtained for the Navier--Stokes system by Agrachev--Sarychev (Comm. Math. Phys. 265, 2006), where the controls are finite-dimensional but not localized in physical space, and Nersesyan--Rissel (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 78, 2025), where physically localized controls admit for special $\omega$ a degenerate but not finite-dimensional structure. For our proof, we study controllability properties of tailored convection equations governed by time-periodic degenerately forced Euler flows that provide a twofold geometric mechanism: transport of information through $\omega$ versus non-stationary mixing effects transferring energy from low-dimensional sources to higher frequencies. The temperature is then controlled by using Coron's return method, while the velocity is mainly driven by the buoyant force. When $\omega$ contains two cuts of $\mathbb{T}^2$, our approach allows to effectively construct low-dimensional control spaces of dimensions that are independent of the choice of $\omega$ within this class of control regions.

Global controllability of Boussinesq channel flows only through the temperature

We show the global approximate controllability of the Boussinesq system with viscosity and diffusion in a planar periodic channel by using only a temperature control supported in a thin strip. At the walls, a slip boundary condition is chosen for the fluid and the normal derivative of the temperature is assumed to vanish. This contributes a first global controllability result of such type for the Boussinesq system in the presence of non-periodic boundary conditions. We resort to a small-time scaling argument to control the vorticity through a large initial temperature. Moreover, relying on the special choice of the domain, we employ J.-M. Coron's return method in order to steer the temperature without significantly impacting the vorticity.

Global controllability of Boussinesq flows by using only a temperature control

We show that buoyancy driven flows can be steered in an arbitrary time towards any state by applying as control only an external temperature profile in a subset of small measure. More specifically, we prove that the 2D incompressible Boussinesq system on the torus is globally approximately controllable via physically localized heating or cooling. In addition, our controls have an explicitly prescribed structure; even without such structural requirements, large data controllability results for Boussinesq flows driven merely by a physically localized temperature profile were so far unknown. The presented method exploits various connections between the model's underlying transport-, coupling-, and scaling mechanisms.

Exponential mixing of constrained random dynamical systems via controllability conditions

We provide deterministic controllability conditions that imply exponential mixing properties for randomly forced constrained dynamical systems with possibly unbounded state space. As an application, new ergodicity results are obtained for non-smooth models in elasto-plasticity driven by various types of noise, including white noise. It is thereby illustrated how tools from control theory can be utilized to tackle regularity issues that commonly arise in the qualitative study of constrained systems.

Exact controllability of incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics in $2$D

This work examines the controllability of planar incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Interior controls are obtained for problems posed in doubly-connected regions; simply-connected configurations are driven by boundary controls. Up to now, only straight channels regulated at opposing walls have been studied. Hence, the present program adds to the literature an exploration of interior controllability, extends the known boundary controllability results, and contributes ideas for treating general domains. To transship obstacles stemming from the MHD coupling and the magnetic field topology, a divide-and-control strategy is proposed. This leads to a family of nonlinear velocity-controlled sub-problems which are solved using J.-M. Coron's return method. The latter is here developed based on a reference trajectory in the domain's first cohomology space.

Localized and degenerate controls for the incompressible Navier-Stokes system

We consider the global approximate controllability of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes system driven by a physically localized and degenerate force. In other words, the fluid is regulated via four scalar controls that depend only on time and appear as coefficients in an effectively constructed driving force supported in a given subdomain. Our idea consists of squeezing low mode controls into a small region, essentially by tracking their actions along the characteristic curves of a linearized vorticity equation. In this way, through explicit constructions and by connecting Coron's return method with recent concepts from geometric control, the original problem for the nonlinear Navier-Stokes system is reduced to one for a linear transport equation steered by a global force. This article can be viewed as an attempt to tackle a well-known open problem due to Agrachev.

Small-time global approximate controllability for incompressible MHD with coupled Navier slip boundary conditions

We study the small-time global approximate controllability for incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows in smoothly bounded two- or three-dimensional domains. The controls act on arbitrary nonempty open portions of each connected boundary component, while linearly coupled Navier slip-with-friction conditions are imposed along the uncontrolled parts of the boundary. Some choices for the friction coefficients give rise to interacting velocity and magnetic field boundary layers. We obtain sufficient dissipation properties of these layers by a detailed analysis of the corresponding asymptotic expansions. For certain friction coefficients, or if the obtained controls are not compatible with the induction equation, an additional pressure-like term appears. We show that such a term does not exist for problems defined in planar simply-connected domains and various choices of Navier slip-with-friction boundary conditions.

Global exact controllability of ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic flows through a planar duct

This article is concerned with the global exact controllability for ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics in a rectangular domain where the controls are situated in both vertical walls. First, global exact controllability via boundary controls is established for a related Els\"asser type system by applying the return method, introduced in [Coron J.M., Math. Control Signals Systems, 5(3) (1992) 295--312]. Similar results are then inferred for the original magnetohydrodynamics system with the help of a special pressure-like corrector in the induction equation. Overall, the main difficulties stem from the nonlinear coupling between the fluid velocity and the magnetic field in combination with the aim of exactly controlling the system. In order to overcome some of the obstacles, we introduce ad-hoc constructions, such as suitable initial data extensions outside of the physical part of the domain and a certain weighted space.

Remarks on Exponential Stability for a Coupled System of Elasticity and Thermoelasticity with Second Sound

We study the large time behavior of solutions to a linear transmission problem in one space dimension. The problem at hand models a thermoelastic material with second sound confined by a purely elastic one. We shall characterize all equilibrium states of the considered system and prove that every solution approaches one designated equilibrium state with an exponential rate as time goes to infinity. Hereto, we apply methods from the theory of strongly continuous semigroups. In particular, we obtain uniform resolvent bounds for the underlying generator. This removes the largeness assumption of elastic wave speeds imposed in [Y.P. Meng and Y.G. Wang, Anal. Appl. (Singap.) 13 (2015)] for having an exponential energy decay rate when the problem only has the trivial equilibrium. In an appendix we provide a similar exponential stability result for the case where heat conduction is modeled using Fourier's law.
