Area-minimizing horizontal graphs with low-regularity in the sub-Finsler Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$

In the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$, equipped with a left-invariant and not necessarily symmetric norm in the horizontal distribution, we provide examples of entire area-minimizing horizontal graphs which are locally Lipschitz in Euclidean sense. A large number of them fail to have further regularity properties. The examples are obtained by prescribing as singular set a horizontal line or a finite union of horizontal half-lines extending from a given point. We also provide examples of families of area-minimizing cones.

Variational formulas for curves of fixed degree

We consider a length functional for $C^1$ curves of fixed degree in graded manifolds equipped with a Riemannian metric. The first variation of this length functional can be computed only if the curve can be deformed in a suitable sense, and this condition is expressed via a differential equation along the curve. In the classical differential geometry setting, the analogous condition was considered by Bryant and Hsu in [Invent. Math., 114(2):435-461, 1993, J. Differential Geom., 36(3):551-589, 1992], who proved that it is equivalent to the surjectivity of a holonomy map. The purpose of this paper is to extend this deformation theory to curves of fixed degree providing several examples and applications. In particular, we give a useful sufficient condition to guarantee the possibility of deforming a curve.

Variational formulas for submanifolds of fixed degree

We consider in this paper an area functional defined on submanifolds of fixed degree immersed into a graded manifold equipped with a Riemannian metric. Since the expression of this area depends on the degree, not all variations are admissible. It turns out that the associated variational vector fields must satisfy a system of partial differential equations of first order on the submanifold. Moreover, given a vector field solution of this system, we provide a sufficient condition that guarantees the possibility of deforming the original submanifold by variations preserving its degree. As in the case of singular curves in sub-Riemannian geometry, there are examples of isolated surfaces that cannot be deformed in any direction. When the deformability condition holds we compute the Euler-Lagrange equations. The resulting mean curvature operator can be of third order.

Pansu-Wulff shapes in $\mathbb{H}^1$

We consider an asymmetric left-invariant norm $||\cdot ||_K$ in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ induced by a convex body $K\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ containing the origin in its interior. Associated to $\|\cdot\|_K$ there is a perimeter functional, that coincides with the classical sub-Riemannian perimeter in case $K$ is the closed unit disk centered at the origin of $\mathbb{R}^2$. Under the assumption that $K$ has $C^2$ boundary with strictly positive geodesic curvature we compute the first variation formula of perimeter for sets with $C^2$ boundary. The localization of the variational formula in the non-singular part of the boundary, composed of the points where the tangent plane is not horizontal, allows us to define a mean curvature function $H_K$ out of the singular set. In the case of non-vanishing mean curvature, the condition that $H_K$ be constant implies that the non-singular portion of the boundary is foliated by horizontal liftings of translations of $\partial K$ dilated by a factor of $1/H_K$. Based on this we can defined a sphere $\mathbb{S}_K$ with constant mean curvature $1$ by considering the union of all horizontal liftings of $\partial K$ starting from $(0,0,0)$ until they meet again in a point of the vertical axis. We give some geometric properties of this sphere and, moreover, we prove that, up to non-homogeneous dilations and left-translations, they are the only solutions of the sub-Finsler isoperimetric problem in a restricted class of sets.

Regularity of Lipschitz boundaries with prescribed sub-Finsler mean curvature in the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$

For a strictly convex set $K\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ of class $C^2$ we consider its associated sub-Finsler $K$-perimeter $|\partial E|_K$ in $\mathbb{H}^1$ and the prescribed mean curvature functional $|\partial E|_K-\int_E f$ associated to a function $f$. Given a critical set for this functional with Euclidean Lipschitz and intrinsic regular boundary, we prove that their characteristic curves are of class $C^2$ and that this regularity is optimal. The result holds in particular when the boundary of $E$ is of class $C^1$.

Tubular neighborhoods in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg groups

We consider the Carnot-Carathéodory distance $δ_E$ to a closed set $E$ in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n$, $n\ge 1$. The $\mathbb{H}$-regularity of $δ_E$ is proved under mild conditions involving a general notion of singular points. In case $E$ is a Euclidean $C^k$ submanifold, $k\ge 2$, we prove that $δ_E$ is $C^k$ out of the singular set. Explicit expressions for the volume of the tubular neighborhood when the boundary of $E$ is of class $C^2$ are obtained, out of the singular set, in terms of the horizontal principal curvatures of $\partial E$ and of the function $\langle N,T\rangle/|N_h|$ and its tangent derivatives.

Brunn-Minkowski inequalities in product metric measure spaces

Given one metric measure space $X$ satisfying a linear Brunn-Minkowski inequality, and a second one $Y$ satisfying a Brunn-Minkowski inequality with exponent $p\ge -1$, we prove that the product $X\times Y$ with the standard product distance and measure satisfies a Brunn-Minkowski inequality of order $1/(1+p^{-1})$ under mild conditions on the measures and the assumption that the distances are strictly intrinsic. The same result holds when we consider restricted classes of sets. We also prove that a linear Brunn-Minkowski inequality is obtained in $X\times Y$ when $Y$ satisfies a Prékopa-Leindler inequality. In particular, we show that the classical Brunn-Minkowski inequality holds for any pair of weakly unconditional sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ (i.e., those containing the projection of every point in the set onto every coordinate subspace) when we consider the standard distance and the product measure of $n$ one-dimensional real measures with positively decreasing densities. This yields an improvement of the class of sets satisfying the Gaussian Brunn-Minkowski inequality. Furthermore, associated isoperimetric inequalities as well as recently obtained Brunn-Minkowski's inequalities are derived from our results.

Isoperimetric inequalities in unbounded convex bodies

We consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in an unbounded convex body $C\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, without assuming any further regularity on the boundary of $C$. Motivated by an example of an unbounded convex body with null isoperimetric profile, we introduce the concept of unbounded convex body with uniform geometry. We then provide a handy characterization of the uniform geometry property and, by exploiting the notion of asymptotic cylinder of $C$, we prove existence of isoperimetric regions in a generalized sense. By an approximation argument we show the strict concavity of the isoperimetric profile and, consequently, the connectedness of generalized isoperimetric regions. We also focus on the cases of small as well as of large volumes; in particular we show existence of isoperimetric regions with sufficiently large volumes, for special classes of unbounded convex bodies. We finally address some questions about isoperimetric rigidity and analyze the asymptotic behavior of the isoperimetric profile in connection with the notion of isoperimetric dimension.

Area-stationary and stable surfaces of class $C^1$ in the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group ${\mathbb H}^1$

We consider surfaces of class $C^1$ in the $3$-dimensional sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group ${\mathbb H}^1$. Assuming the surface is area-stationary, i.e., a critical point of the sub-Riemannian perimeter under compactly supported variations, we show that its regular part is foliated by horizontal straight lines. In case the surface is complete and oriented, without singular points, and stable, i.e., a second order minimum of perimeter, we prove that the surface must be a vertical plane. This implies the following Bernstein type result: a complete locally area-minimizing intrinsic graph of a $C^1$ function in ${\mathbb H}^1$ is a vertical plane.

Regularity of $C^1$ surfaces with prescribed mean curvature in three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifolds

In this paper we consider surfaces of class $C^1$ with continuous prescribed mean curvature in a three-dimensional contact sub-Riemannian manifold and prove that their characteristic curves are of class $C^2$. This regularity result also holds for critical points of the sub-Riemannian perimeter under a volume constraint. All results are valid in the first Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$.

Isoperimetric inequalities in convex cylinders and cylindrically bounded convex bodies

In this paper we consider the isoperimetric profile of convex cylinders $K\times\mathbb{R}^q$, where $K$ is an $m$-dimensional convex body, and of cylindrically bounded convex sets, i.e, those with a relatively compact orthogonal projection over some hyperplane of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, asymptotic to a right convex cylinder of the form $K\times\mathbb{R}$, with $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. Results concerning the concavity of the isoperimetric profile, existence of isoperimetric regions, and geometric descriptions of isoperimetric regions for small and large volumes are obtained.

Isoperimetric inequalities in conically bounded convex bodies

In this paper we consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in the interior of a conically bounded convex set, i.e., an unbounded convex body admitting an \emph{exterior} asymptotic cone. Results concerning existence of isoperimetric regions, the behavior of the isoperimetric profile for large volumes, and a characterization of isoperimetric regions of large volume in conically bounded convex sets of revolution is obtained.

Isoperimetric inequalities in Euclidean convex bodies

In this paper we consider the problem of minimizing the relative perimeter under a volume constraint in the interior of a convex body, i.e., a compact convex set in Euclidean space with interior points. We shall not impose any regularity assumption on the boundary of the convex set. Amongst other results, we shall prove the equivalence between Hausdorff and Lipschitz convergence, the continuity of the isoperimetric profile with respect to the Hausdorff distance, and the convergence in Hausdorff distance of sequences of isoperimetric regions and their free boundaries. We shall also describe the behavior of the isoperimetric profile for small volume, and the behavior of isoperimetric regions for small volume.

Comparison results for capacity

We obtain in this paper bounds for the capacity of a compact set $K$. If $K$ is contained in an $(n+1)$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold, has smooth boundary, and the principal curvatures of $\partial K$ are larger than or equal to $H_0>0$, then ${\rm Cap}(K)\geq (n-1)\,H_0{\rm vol}(\partial K)$. When $K$ is contained in an $(n+1)$-dimensional manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, has smooth boundary, and the mean curvature of $\partial K$ is smaller than or equal to $H_0$, we prove the inequality ${\rm Cap}(K)\leq (n-1)\,H_0{\rm vol}(\partial K)$. In both cases we are able to characterize the equality case. Finally, if $K$ is a convex set in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which admits a supporting sphere of radius $H_0^{-1}$ at any boundary point, then we prove ${\rm Cap}(K)\geq (n-1)\,H_0\mathcal{H}^n(\partial K)$ and that equality holds for the round sphere of radius $H_0^{-1}$.
