How large can galaxies be? Ultra-deep imaging of IC 1101, the most extended known galaxy

The maximum physical extent that galaxies can reach is poorly understood. In this regard, IC 1101, one of the most extended and massive galaxies known, provides a valuable opportunity to constrain the upper limit of galaxy sizes at the present epoch. Previous deep imaging of the system confirmed its enormous extension, but did not indicate whether it has an edge. We explore this issue using the deepest images ever taken of this galaxy; ultra-deep g- and r- band imaging from the INT/WFC, reaching μ = 30 mag arcsec^-2 (3σ in an area equivalent to 10 x 10 arcsec^2). We model and subtract the scattered light from both stars and the galaxy itself using an extended PSF characterization and a hybrid wavelet-based deconvolution. Using a combination of surface brightness, colour, and stellar mass density profiles oriented at different position angles, we find that the main body of IC 1101 extends to Redge = 260 kpc along the semi-major axis (assuming the redshift of Abell 2029, z = 0.077), enclosing 3.4 x 10^12 M_sun in stars. This Redge is among the largest edge radii measured for any galaxy to date, placing IC 1101 at the extreme upper end of the mass-size relation. In addition, we report a large number of asymmetrical, very low surface brightness features around the galaxy that are spatially consistent with the large-scale disturbances observed in the intracluster medium through X-ray studies of the Abell 2029 cluster, in which IC 1101 is embedded. With a confirmed diameter of around 520 kpc, IC 1101 stands as the largest galaxy known to date; yet, its outskirts show clear signatures of ongoing mass assembly, indicating that its spatial extent is still growing.

Classical Cepheids in the Galactic thin disk I. Abundance gradients via non-local thermodynamic equilibrium spectral analysis

Classical Cepheids (CCs) have long been considered excellent tracers of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way's young disk. We present a homogeneous, NLTE spectroscopic analysis of 401 Galactic CCs, based on 1,351 high-resolution optical spectra, spanning Galactocentric distances from 4.6 to 29.3 kpc. Using PySME with MARCS atmospheres and state-of-the-art grids of NLTE departure coefficients, we derive atmospheric parameters and abundances for key species tracing multiple nucleosynthetic channels. Our sample-the largest CC NLTE dataset to date-achieves high internal precision and enables robust modeling of present-day thin-disk abundance patterns and radial gradients. We estimate abundance gradients using three analytic prescriptions (linear, logarithmic, bilinear with a break) within a Bayesian, outlier-robust framework, and we also apply Gaussian Process Regression to capture non-parametric variations. We find that NLTE atmospheric parameters differ systematically from LTE determinations. Moreover, iron and most elemental abundance profiles are better described by non-linear behavior rather than by single-slope linear models: logarithmic fits generally outperform simple linear models, while bilinear fits yield inconsistent break radii across elements. Gaussian Process models reveal a consistent outer-disk flattening of [X/H] for nearly all studied elements. The [X/Fe] ratios are largely flat with Galactocentric radius, indicating coherent chemical scaling with iron across the thin disk, with modest positive offsets for Na and Al and mild declines for Mn and Cu. Comparison with recent literature shows overall agreement but highlights NLTE-driven differences, especially in outer-disk abundances. These results provide tighter empirical constraints for chemo-dynamical models of the Milky Way and set the stage for future NLTE mapping with upcoming large spectroscopic surveys.

Mapping Lyman-alpha forest three-dimensional large scale structure in real and redshift space

This work presents a new physically-motivated supervised machine learning method, Hydro-BAM, to reproduce the three-dimensional Lyman-$α$ forest field in real and in redshift space learning from a reference hydrodynamic simulation, thereby saving about 7 orders of magnitude in computing time. We show that our method is accurate up to $k\sim1\,h\,\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ in the one- (PDF), two- (power-spectra) and three-point (bi-spectra) statistics of the reconstructed fields. When compared to the reference simulation including redshift space distortions, our method achieves deviations of $\lesssim2\%$ up to $k=0.6\,h\,\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ in the monopole, $\lesssim5\%$ up to $k=0.9\,h\,\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ in the quadrupole. The bi-spectrum is well reproduced for triangle configurations with sides up to $k=0.8\,h\,\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$. In contrast, the commonly-adopted Fluctuating Gunn-Peterson approximation shows significant deviations already neglecting peculiar motions at configurations with sides of $k=0.2-0.4\,h\,\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ in the bi-spectrum, being also significantly less accurate in the power-spectrum (within 5$\%$ up to $k=0.7\,h\,\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$). We conclude that an accurate analysis of the Lyman-$α$ forest requires considering the complex baryonic thermodynamical large-scale structure relations. Our hierarchical domain specific machine learning method can efficiently exploit this and is ready to generate accurate Lyman-$α$ forest mock catalogues covering large volumes required by surveys such as DESI and WEAVE.

TOI-2285b: A 1.7 Earth-radius Planet Near the Habitable Zone around a Nearby M Dwarf

We report the discovery of TOI-2285b, a sub-Neptune-sized planet transiting a nearby (42 pc) M dwarf with a period of 27.3 days. We identified the transit signal from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite photometric data, which we confirmed with ground-based photometric observations using the multiband imagers MuSCAT2 and MuSCAT3. Combining these data with other follow-up observations including high resolution spectroscopy with the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph, high resolution imaging with the SPeckle Polarimeter, and radial velocity (RV) measurements with the InfraRed Doppler instrument, we find that the planet has a radius of 1.74 $\pm$ 0.08 $R_\oplus$, a mass of $<$ 19.5 $M_\oplus$ (95\% c.l.), and an insolation flux of 1.54 $\pm$ 0.14 times that of the Earth. Although the planet resides just outside the habitable zone for a rocky planet, if the planet harbors an H$_2$O layer under a hydrogen-rich atmosphere, then liquid water could exist on the surface of the H$_2$O layer depending on the planetary mass and water mass fraction. The bright host star in the near infrared ($K_s=9.0$) makes this planet an excellent target for further RV and atmospheric observations to improve our understanding on the composition, formation, and habitability of sub-Neptune-sized planets.

The bias from hydrodynamic simulations: mapping baryon physics onto dark matter fields

This paper investigates the hierarchy of baryon physics assembly bias relations obtained from state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations with respect to the underlying cosmic web spanned by the dark matter field. Using the Bias Assignment Method (BAM) we find that non-local bias plays a central role. We classify the cosmic web based on the invariants of the curvature tensor defined not only by the gravitational potential, but especially by the over-density, as small scale clustering becomes important in this context. First, the gas density bias relation can be directly mapped onto the dark matter density field to high precision exploiting the strong correlation between them. In a second step, the neutral hydrogen is mapped based on the dark matter and the gas density fields. Finally, the temperature is mapped based on the previous quantities. This permits us to statistically reconstruct the baryon properties within the same simulated volume finding percent-precision in the two-point statistics and compatible results in the three-point statistics, in general within 1-$σ$, with respect to the reference simulation (with 5 to 6 orders of magnitude less computing time). This paves the path to establish the best set-up for the construction of mocks probing the intergalactic medium for the generation of such key ingredients in the statistical analysis of large forthcoming missions such as DESI, Euclid, J-PAS and WEAVE.
