On the Helmholtz Potential metric: The Isotherm Length-Work Theorem

In this paper we introduce the Isotherm Length-Work theorem using the Helmholtz potential metric and the virial expansion of pressure in inverse power of molar volume. The theorem tells us what length of a thermodynamical system described by equation of state through virial expansion along isotherms actually is with such a metric. We also give explicit solutions for thermodynamic length along isotherms in the case of first, second and third order expansion.

On the geometrical thermodynamics of chemical reactions

The formal structure of geometrical thermodynamics is reviewed with particular emphasis on the geometry of equilibria submanifolds. On these submanifolds thermodynamic metrics are defined as the Hessian of thermodynamic potentials. Links between geometry and thermodynamics are explored for single and multiple component, closed and open systems. For multi-component closed and open systems the Gibbs free energy is employed as the thermodynamic potential to investigate the connection between geometry and thermodynamics. The Gibbs free energy is chosen for the analysis of multicomponent systems and, in particular, chemical reactions.

Curvature of the Weinhold metric for thermodynamical systems with 2 degrees of freedom

In this work the curvature of Weinhold (thermodynamical) metric is studied in the case of systems with two thermodynamical degrees of freedom. Conditions for the Gauss curvature $R$ to be zero, positive or negative are worked out. Signature change of the Weinhold metric and the corresponding singular behavior of the curvature at the phase boundaries are studied. Cases of systems with the constant $C_{v}$, including Ideal and Van der Waals gases, and that of Berthelot gas are discussed in detail.

Thermodynamic length in a 2-D thermodynamic state space

The main goal of this paper is to reach an explicit formulation and possible interpretation of thermodynamic length in a thermodynamic state space with two degrees of freedom. Using the energy and entropy metric in a general form, we get explicit results about thermodynamic length along isotherms, its relation with work and with speed of sound. We also look at the relation between the determinants of the energy and entropy metrics and find that they differ by a factor of $T^{4}$.
