Hamilton-Jacobi theory for gauge field theories

Recently, M. de León el al. ([8]) have developed a geometrical description of Hamilton-Jacobi theory for multisymplectic field theory. In our paper we analyse in the same spirit a special kind of field theories which are gauge field theories. The Hamilton-Jacobi theory for this kind of fields is shown.

Contact Hamiltonian Systems

In this paper we study Hamiltonian systems on contact manifolds, which is an appropriate scenario to discuss dissipative systems. We prove a coisotropic reduction theorem similar to the one in symplectic mechanics.

Reduction of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation for nonholonomic systems

Nonholonomic mechanical systems have been attracting more interest in recent years because of their rich geometric properties and their applications in Engineering. In all generality, we discuss the reduction of a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for systems subject to nonholonomic constraints and that are invariant under the action of a group of symmetries. We consider nonholonomic systems subject to linear or nonlinear constraints, with different positioning with respect to the symmetries. We describe the reduction procedure first, to later reconstruct solutions in the unreduced picture, by starting from a reduced Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Examples can be depicted in a wide range of scenarios: from free particles with linear constraints, to vehicle motion.

On the Geometry of the Hamilton-Jacobi Equation and Generating Functions

In this paper we develop a geometric version of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the Poisson setting. Specifically, we "geometrize" what is usually called a complete solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We use some well-known results about symplectic groupoids, in particular cotangent groupoids, as a keystone for the construction of our framework. Our methodology follows the ambitious program proposed by A. Weinstein, [62], in order to develop geometric formulations of the dynamical behavior of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems on Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids. This procedure allows us to take symmetries into account, and, as a by-product, we recover results from [14, 29, 31], but even in these situations our approach is new. A theory of generating functions for the Poisson structures considered here is also developed following the same pattern, solving a longstanding problem of the area: how to obtain a generating function for the identity tranformation and the nearby Poisson automorphisms of Poisson manifolds. A direct application of our results give the construction of a family of Poisson integrators, that is, integrators that conserve the underlying Poisson geometry. These integrators are implemented in the paper in benchmark problems. Some conclusions, current and future directions of research are shown at the end of the paper.

Hamilton-Jacobi theory, Symmetries and Coisotropic Reduction

Reduction theory has played a major role in the study of Hamiltonian systems. On the other hand, the Hamilton-Jacobi theory is one of the main tools to integrate the dynamics of certain Hamiltonian problems and a topic of research on its own. Moreover, the construction of several symplectic integrators rely on approximations of a complete solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The natural question that we address in this paper is how these two topics (reduction and Hamilton-Jacobi theory) fit together. We obtain a reduction and reconstruction procedure for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with symmetries, even in a generalized sense to be clarified below. Several applications and relations to other reductions of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory are shown in the last section of the paper. It is remarkable that as a by-product we obtain a generalization of the Ge-Marsden reduction procedure. Quite surprinsingly, the classical ansatzs available in the literature to solve the Hamilton-Jacobi equation are also particular instances of our framework.

Hamilton-Jacobi theory in multisymplectic classical field theories

The geometric framework for the Hamilton-Jacobi theory developed in previous works is extended for multisymplectic first-order classical field theories. The Hamilton-Jacobi problem is stated for the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms of these theories as a particular case of a more general problem, and the classical Hamilton-Jacobi equation for field theories is recovered from this geometrical setting. Particular and complete solutions to these problems are defined and characterized in several equivalent ways in both formalisms, and the equivalence between them is proved. The use of distributions in jet bundles that represent the solutions to the field equations is the fundamental tool in this formulation. Some examples are analyzed and, in particular, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for non-autonomous mechanical systems is obtained as a special case of our results.

Symmetries in Lagrangian Field Theory

By generalizing the cosymplectic setting for time-dependent Lagrangian mechanics, we propose a geometric framework for the Lagrangian formulation of classical field theories with a Lagrangian depending on the independent variables. For that purpose we consider the first order jet bundles $J^1π$ of a fiber bundle $π:E\to {\mathbb R}^k$ where ${\mathbb R}^k$ is the space of independent variables. Generalized symmetries of the Lagrangian are introduced and the corresponding Noether Theorem is proved.

Hamilton-Jacobi theory in Cauchy data space

Recently, M. de León el al. ([9]) have developed a geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory for Classical Field Theories in the setting of multisymplectic geometry. Our purpose in the current paper is to establish the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi theory in the Cauchy data space, and relate both approaches.

Geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory for higher-order autonomous systems

The geometric framework for the Hamilton-Jacobi theory is used to study this theory in the ambient of higher-order mechanical systems, both in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms. Thus, we state the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equations in these formalisms and apply our results to analyze some particular physical examples.

Unified formalism for the generalized kth-order Hamilton-Jacobi problem

The geometric formulation of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory enables us to generalize it to systems of higher-order ordinary differential equations. In this work we introduce the unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism for the geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theory on higher-order autonomous dynamical systems described by regular Lagrangian functions.

A Universal Hamilton-Jacobi Theory

In this paper we develop a Hamilton-Jacobi theory in the setting of almost Poisson manifolds. The theory extends the classical Hamilton-Jacobi theory and can be also applied to very general situations including nonholonomic mechanical systems and time dependent systems with external forces.

Kinematic reduction and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation

A close relationship between the classical Hamilton-Jacobi theory and the kinematic reduction of control systems by decoupling vector fields is shown in this paper. The geometric interpretation of this relationship relies on new mathematical techniques for mechanics defined on a skew-symmetric algebroid. This geometric structure allows us to describe in a simplified way the mechanics of nonholonomic systems with both control and external forces.

Geometric Structures in Field Theory

This review paper is concerned with the generalizations to field theory of the tangent and cotangent structures and bundles that play fundamental roles in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of classical mechanics. The paper reviews, compares and constrasts the various generalizations in order to bring some unity to the field of study. The generalizations seem to fall into two categories. In one direction some have generalized the geometric structures of the bundles, arriving at the various axiomatic systems such as k-symplectic and k-tangent structures. The other direction was to fundamentally extend the bundles themselves and to then explore the natural geometry of the extensions. This latter direction gives us the multisymplectic geometry on jet and cojet bundles and n-symplectic geometry on frame bundles.
