Bulkcone Singularities and Complex Geodesics

Thermal correlators in holographic CFTs on a sphere exhibit bulk-cone singularities at points connected by null geodesics in the bulk. The operator product expansion analysis of the stress-tensor sector of the correlator shows that there are analogous singularities at spacelike separation for thermal CFTs on a plane. We show that these are associated with complex null geodesics. There is a phase transition between the real and complex spacelike geodesics underpinning this picture. We also provide a phase-shift calculation of the position of these generalised bulk-cone singularities.

Bulk Phase Shift and Singularity

High-energy scattering of a light particle off a black hole at fixed impact parameter is described by an eikonal phase, which encodes the resulting time delay and angular deflection. This bulk phase shift admits a holographic interpretation as of the thermal momentum-space two-point function of a scalar operator in the CFT in the Regge limit. At small impact parameter, the phase shift acquires an imaginary part signaling inelastic scattering, obscuring the interpretation of time delay and deflection which become complex-valued. However, in a holographic CFT these quantities can also be extracted from the so called bulk-cone singularities of the position space thermal correlator. Extending this analysis to small impact parameters, we find that the position-space correlator develops a singularity precisely when a null geodesic reflects off the black hole singularity and reaches the opposite boundary. This provides a more robust identification of bulk time delay and angular deflection through singularities of position-space correlators.

CFT correlators, ${\cal W}$-algebras and Generalized Catalan Numbers

In two spacetime dimensions the Virasoro heavy-heavy-light-light (HHLL) vacuum block in a certain limit is governed by the Catalan numbers. The equation for their generating function can be generalized to a differential equation which the logarithm of the block satisfies. We show that a similar story holds for the HHLL ${\cal W}_N$ vacuum blocks, where a suitable generalization of the Catalan numbers plays the main role. Moreover, the ${\cal W}_N$ blocks have the same form as the stress tensor sector of HHLL near lightcone conformal correlators in $2(N-1)$ spacetime dimensions. In the latter case the Catalan numbers are generalized to the numbers of linear extensions of certain partially ordered sets.

Stress Tensor Sector of Conformal Correlators

An important part of a CFT four-point function, the stress tensor sector, comprises the exchanges of the stress tensor and its composites. The OPE coefficients of these multi-stress tensor operators and consequently, the complete stress tensor sector of four-point functions in CFTs with a large central charge, can be determined by computing a heavy-heavy-light-light correlator. We show how one can make substantial progress in this direction by bootstrapping a certain ansatz for the stress tensor sector of the correlator, iteratively computing the OPE coefficients of multi-stress tensor operators with increasing twist. Some parameters are not fixed by the bootstrap - they correspond to the OPE coefficients of multi-stress tensors with spin zero and two. We further show that in holographic CFTs one can use the phase shift computed in the dual gravitational theory to reduce the set of undetermined parameters to the OPE coefficients of multi-stress tensors with spin zero. Finally, we verify some of these results using the Lorentzian OPE inversion formula and comment on its regime of applicability.

Leading Multi-Stress Tensors and Conformal Bootstrap

Near lightcone correlators are dominated by operators with the lowest twist. We consider the contributions of such leading lowest twist multi-stress tensor operators to a heavy-heavy-light-light correlator in a CFT of any even dimensionality with a large central charge. An infinite number of such operators contribute, but their sum is described by a simple ansatz. We show that the coefficients in this ansatz can be determined recursively, thereby providing an operational procedure to compute them. This is achieved by bootstrapping the corresponding near lightcone correlator: conformal data for any minimal-twist determines that for the higher minimal-twist and so on. To illustrate this procedure in four spacetime dimensions we determine the contributions of double- and triple-stress tensors. We compute the OPE coefficients; whenever results are available in the literature, we observe complete agreement. We also compute the contributions of double-stress tensors in six spacetime dimensions and determine the corresponding OPE coefficients. In all cases the results are consistent with the exponentiation of the near lightcone correlator. This is similar to the situation in two spacetime dimensions for the Virasoro vacuum block.

Subleading Eikonal, AdS/CFT and Double Stress Tensors

The eikonal phase which determines the Regge limit of the gravitational scattering amplitude of a light particle off a heavy one in Minkowski spacetimes admits an expansion in the ratio of the Schwarzschild radius of the heavy particle to the impact parameter. Such an eikonal phase in AdS spacetimes of any dimensionality has been computed to all orders and reduces to the corresponding Minkowski result when both the impact parameter and the Schwarzschild radius are much smaller than the AdS radius. The leading term in the AdS eikonal phase can be reproduced in the dual CFT by a single stress tensor conformal block, but the subleading term is a result of an infinite sum of the double stress tensor contributions. We provide a closed form expression for the OPE coefficients of the leading twist double stress tensors in four spacetime dimensions and perform the sum to compute the corresponding lightcone behavior of a heavy-heavy-light-light CFT correlator. The resulting compact expression passes a few nontrivial independent checks. In particular, it agrees with the subleading eikonal phase at large impact parameter.

Black Holes and Conformal Regge Bootstrap

Highly energetic particles traveling in the background of an asymptotically AdS black hole experience a Shapiro time delay and an angle deflection. These quantities are related to the Regge limit of a heavy-heavy-light-light four-point function of scalar operators in the dual CFT. The Schwarzschild radius of the black hole in AdS units is proportional to the ratio of the conformal dimension of the heavy operator and the central charge. This ratio serves as a useful expansion parameter; its power counts the number of stress tensors in the multi-stress tensor operators which contribute to the four-point function. In the cross-channel the four-point function is determined by the OPE coefficients and anomalous dimensions of the heavy-light double-trace operators. We explain how this data can be obtained and explicitly compute the first and second order terms in the expansion of the anomalous dimensions. We observe perfect agreement with known results in the lightcone limit, which were obtained by computing perturbative corrections to the energy eigenstates in AdS spacetimes.

Black Holes, Heavy States, Phase Shift and Anomalous Dimensions

We compute the phase shift of a highly energetic particle traveling in the background of an asymptotically AdS black hole. In the dual CFT, the phase shift is related to a four point function in the Regge limit. The black hole mass is translated to the ratio between the conformal dimension of a heavy operator and the central charge. This ratio serves as a useful expansion parameter; its power measures the number of stress tensors appearing in the intermediate channel. We compute the leading term in the phase shift in a holographic CFT of arbitrary dimensionality using Conformal Regge Theory and observe complete agreement with the gravity result. In a two-dimensional CFT with a large central charge the heavy-heavy-light-light Virasoro vacuum block reproduces the gravity phase shift to all orders in the expansion parameter. We show that the leading order phase shift is related to the anomalous dimensions of certain double trace operators and verify this agreement using known results for the latter. We also perform a separate gravity calculation of these anomalous dimensions to second order in the expansion parameter and compare with the phase shift expansion.

On Complexity of Holographic Flavors

Quantum complexity of a thermofield double state in a strongly coupled quantum field theory has been argued to be holographically related to the action evaluated on the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. The growth rate of quantum complexity in systems dual to Einstein-Hilbert gravity saturates a bound which follows from the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. We consider corrections to the growth rate in models with flavor degrees of freedom. They are realized by adding a small number of flavor branes to the system. Holographically, such corrections come from the DBI action of the flavor branes evaluated on the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. We relate corrections to the growth of quantum complexity to corrections to the mass of the system, and observe that the bound on the growth rate is never violated.

General Backgrounds for higher spin massive particles

We consider the propagation of totally symmetric bosonic fields on generic background spacetimes. The mutual compatibility of the dynamical equations and constraints severely constrains the set of geometries where consistent propagation is possible. To enlarge this set in this article we allow several background fields to be turned on. We were able to show that massive fields of spin s greater than or equal to three may consistently propagate in a large set of non-trivial spacetimes, such as asymptotically de-Sitter, flat and anti-de-Sitter black holes geometries, as long as certain conditions between the various background fields are met. For the special case of massive spin-2 fields the set of allowed spacetimes is larger and includes domain-wall-type geometries, such as the Freedman-Robertson-Walker metric. We comment on the assumptions underlying our study and on possible applications of our results.

Bulk Phase Shift, CFT Regge Limit and Einstein Gravity

The bulk phase shift, related to a CFT four-point function, describes two-to-two scattering at fixed impact parameter in the dual AdS spacetime. We describe its properties for a generic CFT and then focus on large $N$ CFTs with classical bulk duals. We compute the bulk phase shift for vector operators using Regge theory. We use causality and unitarity to put bounds on the bulk phase shift. The resulting constraints bound three-point functions of two vector operators and the stress tensor in terms of the gap of the theory. Similar bounds should hold for any spinning operator in a CFT. Holographically this implies that in a classical gravitational theory any non-minimal coupling to the graviton, as well as any other particle with spin greater than or equal to two, is suppressed by the mass of higher spin particles.

Conformal Field Theories and Deep Inelastic Scattering

We consider Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) thought experiments in unitary Conformal Field Theories (CFTs). We explore the implications of the standard dispersion relations for the OPE data. We derive positivity constraints on the OPE coefficients of minimal-twist operators of even spin s \geq 2. In the case of s=2, when the leading-twist operator is the stress tensor, we reproduce the Hofman-Maldacena bounds. For s>2 the bounds are new.

Fermion Dipole Moment and Holography

In the background of a charged AdS black hole, we consider a Dirac particle endowed with an arbitrary magnetic dipole moment. For non-zero charge and dipole coupling of the bulk fermion, we find that the dual boundary theory can be plagued with superluminal modes. Requiring consistency of the dual CFT amounts to constraining the strength of the dipole coupling by an upper bound. We briefly discuss the implications of our results for the physics of holographic non-Fermi liquids.

Higher-Spin Modes in a Domain-Wall Universe

We find a consistent set of equations of motion and constraints for massive higher-spin fluctuations in a gravitational background, required of certain characteristic properties but more general than constant curvature space. Of particular interest among such geometries is a thick domain wall--a smooth version of the Randall-Sundrum metric. Apart from the graviton zero mode, the brane accommodates quasi-bound massive states of higher spin contingent on the bulk mass. We estimate the mass and lifetime of these higher-spin resonances, which may appear as metastable dark matter in a braneworld universe.

Conformal Blocks and Negativity at Large Central Charge

We consider entanglement negativity for two disjoint intervals in 1+1 dimensional CFT in the limit of large central charge. As the two intervals get close, the leading behavior of negativity is given by the logarithm of the conformal block where a set of approximately null descendants appears in the intermediate channel. We compute this quantity numerically and compare with existing analytic methods which provide perturbative expansion in powers of the cross-ratio.

Marginal Deformations of N=4 SYM and Open vs. Closed String Parameters

We make precise the connection between the generic Leigh--Strassler deformation of N=4 SYM and noncommutativity. We construct an appropriate noncommutativity matrix, which turns out to define a nonassociative deformation. Viewing this noncommutativity matrix as part of the set of open string data which characterize the deformation and mapping them to the closed string data (e.g. metric and B--field), we are able to construct the gravity dual and the the correponding deformed flat space geometry up to third order in the deformation parameter.

Holographic Constraints on a Vector Boson

We show that holography poses non-trivial restrictions on various couplings of an interacting field. For a vector boson in the AdS Reissner-Nordstrom background, the dual boundary theory is pathological unless its electromagnetic and gravitational multipole moments are constrained. Among others, a generic dipole moment afflicts the dual CFT with superluminal modes, whose remedy bounds the gyromagnetic ratio in a range around the natural value g=2. We discuss the CFT implications of our results, and argue that similar considerations can shed light on how massive higher-spin fields couple to electromagnetism and gravity.

On Holographic Entanglement Entropy of Charged Matter

We study holographic entanglement entropy in the background of charged dilatonic black holes which can be viewed as holographic duals of certain finite density states of N=4 super Yang-Mills. These charged black holes are distinguished in that they have vanishing ground state entropy. The entanglement entropy for a slab experiences a second order phase transition as the thickness of the slab is varied, while the entanglement entropy for a sphere is a smooth function of the radius. This suggests that the second scale introduced by the anisotropy of the slab plays an important role in driving the phase transition. In both cases we do not observe any logarithmic violation of the area law indicative of hidden Fermi surfaces. We investigate how these results are affected by the inclusion of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk gravitational action. We also observe that such addition to the bulk action does not change the logarithmic violation of the area law in the backgrounds with hyperscaling violation.
