Accurate Precipitation Forecast by Efficiently Learning from Massive Atmospheric Variables and Unbalanced Distribution

Short-term (0-24 hours) precipitation forecasting is highly valuable to socioeconomic activities and public safety. However, the highly complex evolution patterns of precipitation events, the extreme imbalance between precipitation and non-precipitation samples, and the inability of existing models to efficiently and effectively utilize large volumes of multi-source atmospheric observation data hinder improvements in precipitation forecasting accuracy and computational efficiency. To address the above challenges, this study developed a novel forecasting model capable of effectively and efficiently utilizing massive atmospheric observations by automatically extracting and iteratively predicting the latent features strongly associated with precipitation evolution. Furthermore, this study introduces a 'WMCE' loss function, designed to accurately discriminate extremely scarce precipitation events while precisely predicting their intensity values. Extensive experiments on two datasets demonstrate that our proposed model substantially and consistently outperforms all prevalent baselines in both accuracy and efficiency. Moreover, the proposed forecasting model substantially lowers the computational cost required to obtain valuable predictions compared to existing approaches, thereby positioning it as a milestone for efficient and practical precipitation forecasting.

Understanding the Stability for LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 as a Co-free positive electrode material

For understanding the stability of Co-free positive electrode material, LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 was synthesized with different addition amount of lithium during calcination. The valence states of transition metal in the prepared samples were determined by combining accurate stoichiometry analysis via ICP, magnetic moment measurement via SQUID, and element valence analysis via XPS with Ar ion etching. Unexpectedly, the transition metals, Ni and Mn, at interior and surface of LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2 particles show different electrochemical properties. This answer lingering questions of Li de-intercalation mechanism in LiNi0.5Mn0.5O2.

Data-driven research on chemical features of Jingdezhen and Longquan celadon by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence

The energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) is used to determine the chemical composition of celadon body and glaze in Longquan kiln (at Dayao County) and Jingdezhen kiln. Forty typical shards in four cultural eras were selected to investigate the raw materials and firing technology. Random forests, a relatively new statistical technique, has been adopted to identify chemical elements that are strongest explanatory variables to classify samples into defferent cultural eras and kilns. The results indicated that the contents of Na2O, Fe2O3, TiO2, SiO2 and CaO vary in celadon bodies from Longquan and Jingdezhen, which implies that local clay was used to manufacture celadon bodies in Jingdezhen kiln. By comparing the chemical composition in glaze, we find that the chemical elements and firing technology of Jingdezhen kiln are very similar to those in Longquan kiln, especially for Ming dynasty. This study reveals the inheritance between Jingdezhen kiln and Longquan kiln, and explains the differences between those two kilns.
