Extensions of the Carlitz-McConnel and Blokhuis-Sziklai theorems for unions of cyclotomic classes

Let $p$ be a prime, let $q=p^n$, and let $D\subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^\ast$. A celebrated result of Carlitz and McConnel states that if $D$ is a proper subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q^\ast$, and $f:\mathbb{F}_q\to\mathbb{F}_q$ is a function such that $(f(x)-f(y))/(x-y)\in D$ for all $x\neq y$, then $f$ must be of the form $f(x)=ax^{p^j}+b$. In this paper, we extend their result to the setting where $D$ is a union of cosets of a fixed subgroup of $\mathbb{F}_q^\ast$, under a mild assumption. In a similar spirit, we also investigate maximum cliques in related Cayley graphs over finite fields, strengthening several results of Blokhuis, Sziklai, and Asgarli and Yip.

The Cross-Correlation Distribution of the Niho-Type Decimation $d=4(2^m-1)+1$

The cross-correlation problem is a classical problem in sequence design. In this paper, we determine the cross-correlation distribution of the Niho-type decimation $d=4(2^m-1)+1$ over $\mathbb F_{2^{2m}}$ for every positive integer $m$. With $q=2^m$, this is equivalent to determining the distribution of the number of roots in $U_{q+1}$ of $f_a(x)=x^7+ax^4+\bar a x^3+1$ for $a\in\mathbb F_{q^2}$, where $U_{q+1}=\{x\in\mathbb F_{q^2}:x^{q+1}=1\}$. The main difficulty is to count the four-element subsets of $U_{q+1}$ that may occur as root sets of $f_a$. We normalize such subsets by their product and study the resulting condition through the associated resolvent. This reduces the required enumeration to several equations over $\mathbb F_q$, which are evaluated by character sums and Kloosterman sums. The remaining mixed Kloosterman sum is related to a Kloosterman sum over $\mathbb F_{2^{2m}}$ and is evaluated using a theorem of Carlitz. Consequently, we obtain explicit formulas for all the frequencies in the cross-correlation distribution.

Multi-View Block Distance Distributions and Linear Programming Bounds for Locally Recoverable Codes with Availability

We develop a multi-view linear-programming framework for locally recoverable codes with arbitrary fixed availability $a$. For any retained order $1 \le s \le a$, the selected helper sets, the recovered coordinate, and their complement form an $(s+2)$-part partition. Recording the Hamming distance on all blocks preserves both compatibility among the selected repair alternatives and their coupling with the remaining coordinates. The resulting joint distribution satisfies centered counting identities, product-Krawtchouk positivity, and collision inequalities from the local-distance condition; for fixed $s$, these constraints give a polynomial-size relaxation for arbitrary, possibly nonlinear, codes over any finite field. Retaining one view recovers the three-block model of our companion paper. We develop the first genuinely multi-view case, $s=2$, in detail and specialize the exact computations to availability $a=2$. The resulting four-block LP projects to both the one-view three-block model and a globally conditioned two-view relaxation, making explicit the information lost by each coarsening. Exact rational primal-dual certificates together with checked constructions prove $M_{\max}(2,8,4,2,2,2)=8$, $M_{\max}(3,7,3,2,2,2)=27$, and $M_{\max}(4,7,3,2,2,2)=64$; in all three cases the four-block bound is strictly stronger than both coarsenings.

The generalized covering radii of Melas codes

The generalized covering radii have recently emerged as fundamental parameters of linear codes with applications to database linear querying. In this paper, we study the generalized covering radii $ρ_t(M(m,q))$ of Melas codes $M(m,q)$ over any finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We determine $ρ_2(M(m,q))$ for all $q$, and for a general $t \ge 3$, we prove that $ρ_t(M(m,q)) \in \left\{2t,2t+1\right\}$ for $q \in \{2,3\}$ and $ρ_t(M(m,q))=2t$ for $q \ge 4$ whenever $m$ is sufficiently large. These results extend recent work on the covering radius of Melas codes.

Linear programming bounds for binary and ternary LCD Codes

We derive linear programming (LP) bounds on the minimum distance of binary and ternary linear complementary dual (LCD) codes by imposing arithmetic constraints on their weight enumerators. Special values of the weight enumerator give finitely many Gauss phases, each of which yields linear equations in the ordinary weight-distribution variables. The resulting bounds strengthen the real-valued LCD counting LP without introducing additional variables; both the number of branches and the number of added equations per branch are bounded independently of the code length. Exact certificates establish strict improvements for 62 binary parameter pairs of length at most 20 and 39 ternary pairs of length at most 14. For four binary pairs, the bounds also improve the joint-weight-enumerator LP while using fewer variables per branch. These comparisons show that Gauss-phase information provides a compact strengthening of existing LP relaxations for LCD codes.

Linear Programming Bounds for Locally Recovery Codes II

We give a polynomial-size linear programming bound for $q$-ary all-symbol locally recoverable codes with locality parameters $(r,δ)$, without assuming linearity. The key idea is to keep, for every ordered pair of codewords and every selected recovery view, the joint Hamming weight on the helper set, the recovered coordinate, and the rest of the code -- rather than collapsing this triple into a single distance, as earlier formulations do. Averaging this three-block distribution over recovery views of the same length yields exact identities linking it to the global distance distribution, together with nonnegative product-Krawtchouk constraints that encode locality and spectral positivity simultaneously. The resulting LP has polynomially many variables, its optimum dominates the ordinary Delsarte bound, and an earlier outside-distance formulation, the convex-hull bound of Li--Wei--Xiong, and the dual-based bound of Gruica--Jany--Ravagnani all arise from it as coarser marginals. Exact rational certificates over $q=2,3,4$ show the bound is strictly stronger than the best of these prior LPs in thirteen of fifteen tested cases, pinning down seven exact maximum code sizes and twelve exact maximum linear dimensions.

Characterization of a class of complete permutation quadrinomials over $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2m}}$

Let $q=2^m$, $Q=2^k$, and $1\leq k\leq m-1$. We characterize complete permutation polynomials (CPPs) over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ of the form \[ f(x)=c_0x^{Q+1}+c_1x^{Q+q}+c_2x^{qQ+1} +c_3x^{q(Q+1)},\qquad c_i\in\mathbb{F}_{q^2}. \] We prove that no such CPP exists when $k>1$, and recover the known characterization in the cubic case $k=1$. This completes the classification throughout the stated exponent range. The proof uses the known permutation classification to reduce completeness to linear perturbations of product and monomial models. The required nonpermutation results follow from direct elementary arguments based on the quadratic structure over $\mathbb{F}_2$.

Asymptotic Bounds on Generalized Covering Radii of Binary Primitive BCH Codes

Fix integers $e\ge2$ and $r\ge1$. In this paper we study the $r$-th generalized covering radius $ρ_r\left(BCH(e,m)\right)$ of the binary primitive $e$-error-correcting BCH code $BCH(e,m)$. By using an algebraic-geometric reformulation of the covering problem together with an explicit Lang-Weil estimate, we prove that \[ρ_r\bigl(\BCH(e,m)\bigr)\le(r+1)e-1\] for all sufficiently large $m$. For $e\ge7$, this improves a recent result of Belinsky--Zabokritskiy. Our proof gives a substantially simpler geometric approach to this upper bound. In particular it implies that \[ρ_2\bigl(BCH(e,m)\bigr)=3e-1\] for all sufficiently large $m$. Previously it was only known that \[ρ_2\bigl(\BCH(e,m)\bigr) \in \left\{3e-1,3e\right\}\] for all sufficiently large $m$.

Counterexamples to Charpin's Conjecture on BCH codes

We construct an infinite family of $q$-ary primitive narrow-sense BCH codes whose minimum distance strictly exceeds the Bose distance; in fact, the gap between the two can be arbitrarily large as the length of the code tends to infinity. The key idea is to embed these BCH codes in a suitably large punctured generalized Reed--Muller code, whose codeword weights obey divisibility conditions supplied by Ax's theorem. This divisibility forces the minimum distance of the BCH codes far above the Bose distance. In particular, our family disproves a longstanding conjecture of Charpin asserting that this difference is at most four.

Moment-based linear programming bounds for locally recoverable codes

In this paper we derive new Delsarte-type linear programming bounds for $q$-ary $(r,δ)$-locally recoverable codes (LRCs) with three attributes: first, the variable set is comparable in size to that of the classical Delsarte LP; second, our LP exploits the higher-order information forced by the local-distance condition through order \(δ-2\), in the sense that for nondegenerate linear codes, its balanced base part gives exactly the same dimension bound as the symmetrized refined-weight LP of Gruica, Jany, and Ravagnani, while the additional constraints, nonvacuous whenever $δ\ge 3$, give a further strengthening; and third, it applies to general $(r,δ)$-LRCs, linear and nonlinear alike. Extensive computations over binary and ternary alphabets show that the convex-hull LP yields improvements not captured by the previous LP and often sharpens the shortening and generalized Singleton bounds.

On generalized covering radii of binary primitive double-error-correcting BCH codes

The generalized covering radii (GCR) of linear codes are a fundamental higher-dimensional extension of the classical covering radius. While the second and third GCR of binary primitive double-error-correcting BCH codes, $\text{BCH}(2,m)$, were recently determined, their proofs relied on highly complex combinatorial arguments, and the behavior of the GCR hierarchy for larger orders $k$ has remained largely unexplored. In this paper, we introduce the Generalized Supercode Lemma, which lower-bounds the GCR of a code using the generalized Hamming weights of an appropriate supercode. Applying this lemma, we significantly streamline and simplify the proofs for the known lower bounds of $ρ_2(\text{BCH}(2,m))$ and $ρ_3(\text{BCH}(2,m))$, and we establish a new lower bound for $ρ_4(\text{BCH}(2,m))$. Furthermore, by combining combinatorial arguments with Weil-type exponential sum estimates, we investigate the GCR hierarchy for general $k$, proving that $2k \le ρ_k(\text{BCH}(2,m)) \le 2k+1$ whenever $m$ is sufficiently large compared to $k$.

On covering radius of generalized Zetterberg codes

We employ analytic number theoretic techniques, specifically character sums and Weil type estimates, to study the covering radius of the generalized Zetterberg codes over all finite fields. Although the even and odd field cases require distinct technical treatment, the proofs follow a unified analytic framework that is substantially simpler and more transparent than previous approaches. We prove that the covering radius is at most 3 in all cases, and determine its exact value for a wide range of parameters. In even characteristic, our results fill the gap left by recent studies focused solely on odd characteristic; for odd characteristic, the range of parameters for which the covering radius is exactly determined is considerably broader than previously known. Combined with the corresponding minimum distance results, we obtain infinitely many quasi-perfect and maximal codes within this family.

Classification of a class of planar quadrinomials

Let $p$ be an odd prime, $k,\ell$ be positive integers, $q=p^k, Q=p^{\ell}$. In this paper we characterise planar functions of the form $f_{\underline{c}}(X)=c_0X^{qQ+q}+c_1X^{qQ+1}+c_2X^{Q+q}+c_3X^{Q+1}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ for any $\underline{c}=(c_0,c_1,c_2,c_3) \in \mathbb{F}_{q^2}^4$ in terms of linear equivalence.

Some permutation pentanomials over finite fields of even characteristic

In a recent paper Zhang et al. constructed 17 families of permutation pentanomials of the form $x^t+x^{r_1(q-1)+t}+x^{r_2(q-1)+t}+x^{r_3(q-1)+t}+x^{r_4(q-1)+t}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ where $q=2^m$. In this paper for 14 of these 17 families we provide a simple explanation as to why they are permutations. We also extend these 14 families into three general classes of permutation pentanomials over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$.

The central limit theorem for entries of random matrices with specific rank over finite fields

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of order $q$, and $\mathcal{A}$ a non-empty proper subset of $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $\mathbf{M}$ be a random $m \times n$ matrix of rank $r$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ taken with uniform distribution. It was proved recently by Sanna that as $m,n \to \infty$ and $r,q,\mathcal{A}$ are fixed, the number of entries of $\mathbf{M}$ in $\mathcal{A}$ approaches a normal distribution. The question was raised as to whether or not one can still obtain a central limit theorem of some sort when $r$ goes to infinity in a way controlled by $m$ and $n$. In this paper we answer this question affirmatively.

A note on the differential spectrum of the Ness-Helleseth function

Let $n\geqslant3$ be an odd integer and $u$ an element in the finite field $\gf_{3^n}$. The Ness-Helleseth function is the binomial $f_u(x)=ux^{d_1}+x^{d_2}$ over $\gf_{3^n}$, where $d_1=\frac{3^n-1}{2}-1$ and $d_2=3^n-2$. In 2007, Ness and Helleseth showed that $f_u$ is an APN function when $χ(u+1)=χ(u-1)=χ(u)$, is differentially $3$-uniform when $χ(u+1)=χ(u-1)\neqχ(u)$, and has differential uniformity at most 4 if $ χ(u+1)\neqχ(u-1)$ and $u\notin\gf_3$. Here $χ(\cdot)$ denotes the quadratic character on $\gf_{3^n}$. Recently, Xia et al. determined the differential uniformity of $f_u$ for all $u$ and computed the differential spectrum of $f_u$ for $u$ satisfying $χ(u+1)=χ(u-1)$ or $u\in\gf_3$. The remaining problem is the differential spectrum of $f_u$ with $χ(u+1)\neqχ(u-1)$ and $u\notin\gf_3$. In this paper, we fill in the gap. By studying differential equations arising from the Ness-Helleseth function $f_u$ more carefully, we express the differential spectrum of $f_u$ for such $u$ in terms of two quadratic character sums. This complements the previous work of Xia et al.

Decoding Error Probability of the Random Matrix Ensemble over the Erasure Channel

Using tools developed in a recent work by Shen and the second author, in this paper we carry out an in-depth study on the average decoding error probability of the random matrix ensemble over the erasure channel under three decoding principles, namely unambiguous decoding, maximum likelihood decoding and list decoding. We obtain explicit formulas for the average decoding error probabilities of the random matrix ensemble under these three decoding principles and compute the error exponents. Moreover, for unambiguous decoding, we compute the variance of the decoding error probability of the random matrix ensemble and the error exponent of the variance, which imply a strong concentration result, that is, roughly speaking, the ratio of the decoding error probability of a random code in the ensemble and the average decoding error probability of the ensemble converges to 1 with high probability when the code length goes to infinity.

On correlation distribution of Niho-type decimation $d=3(p^m-1)+1$

The cross-correlation problem is a classic problem in sequence design. In this paper we compute the cross-correlation distribution of the Niho-type decimation $d=3(p^m-1)+1$ over $\mathrm{GF}(p^{2m})$ for any prime $p \ge 5$. Previously this problem was solved by Xia et al. only for $p=2$ and $p=3$ in a series of papers. The main difficulty of this problem for $p \ge 5$, as pointed out by Xia et al., is to count the number of codewords of "pure weight" 5 in $p$-ary Zetterberg codes. It turns out this counting problem can be transformed by the MacWilliams identity into counting codewords of weight at most 5 in $p$-ary Melas codes, the most difficult of which is related to a K3 surface well studied in the literature and can be computed. When $p \ge 7$, the theory of elliptic curves over finite fields also plays an important role in the resolution of this problem.
