Quantum criticality and factorization in a constrained Rydberg spin chain

We investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of a one-dimensional constrained quantum spin chain realized in coherently driven Rydberg-atom arrays with competing local Rabi driving and dipole-dipole exchange interactions. Projecting onto the blockade-constrained Hilbert space yields an effective model in which local and nonlocal quantum fluctuations compete on equal footing. Combining exact diagonalization, the density-matrix renormalization group, and variational uniform matrix-product-state calculations, we establish a complete phase diagram comprising a Luttinger liquid, an antiferromagnetic ordered phase, and a polarized paramagnet. We identify two distinct mechanisms for the destruction of antiferromagnetic order: a conventional Ising transition at strong driving and a continuous quantum melting into the Luttinger liquid at weak driving, characterized using entanglement-based diagnostics and finite-entanglement scaling. In addition, we uncover an exact ground-state factorization line embedded within the ordered phase, providing an analytically tractable zero-entanglement reference point for experiments with programmable Rydberg quantum simulators.

Phase transition revealed by eigen microstate entropy

We introduce the eigen microstate entropy ($S_{\text{EM}}$), a novel metric of complexity derived from the probabilities of statistically independent eigen microstates. After establishing its scaling behavior in equilibrium systems and demonstrating its utility in critical phenomena (mean spherical, Ising, and Potts models), we apply $S_{\text{EM}}$ to non-equilibrium complex systems. Our analysis reveals a consistent precursor signal: a significant increase in $S_{\text{EM}}$ precedes major phase transitions. Specifically, we observe this entropy rise before biomolecular condensate formation in liquid-liquid phase separation in living cells and months ahead of El Ni\~no events. These findings position $S_{\text{EM}}$ as a general framework for detecting and interpreting phase transitions in non-equilibrium systems.

Continuously varying critical exponents in an exactly solvable long-range cluster XY mode

We investigate a generalized antiferromagnetic cluster XY model in a transverse magnetic field, where long-range interactions decay algebraically with distance. This model can be exactly solvable within a free fermion framework. By analyzing the gap, we explicitly derive the critical exponents $\nu$ and $z$, finding that the relationship $\nu z = 1$ still holds. However, the values of $\nu$ and $z$ depend on the decaying exponent $\alpha$, in contrast to those for the quantum long-range antiferromagnetic Ising chain. To optimize scaling behavior, we verify these critical exponents using correlation functions and fidelity susceptibility, achieving excellent data collapse across various system sizes by adjusting fitting parameters. Finally, we compute the entanglement entropy at the critical point to determine the central charge $c$, and find it also varies with $\alpha$. This study provides insights into the unique effect of long-range cluster interactions on the critical properties of quantum spin systems.

Quantum criticality of generalized Aubry-Andr\'{e} models with exact mobility edges using fidelity susceptibility

In this study, we explore the quantum critical phenomena in generalized Aubry-Andr\'{e} models, with a particular focus on the scaling behavior at various filling states. Our approach involves using quantum fidelity susceptibility to precisely identify the mobility edges in these systems. Through a finite-size scaling analysis of the fidelity susceptibility, we are able to determine both the correlation-length critical exponent and the dynamical critical exponent at the critical point of the generalized Aubry-Andr\'{e} model. Based on the Diophantine equation conjecture, we can determines the number of subsequences of the Fibonacci sequence and the corresponding scaling functions for a specific filling fraction, as well as the universality class. Our findings demonstrate the effectiveness of employing the generalized fidelity susceptibility for the analysis of unconventional quantum criticality and the associated universal information of quasiperiodic systems in cutting-edge quantum simulation experiments.

Optimal Dynamical Gauge in the Quantum Rabi Model

In this paper, we investigate the gauge dependence of various physical observables in the quantum Rabi model (QRM) under different potential fields, arising from the Hilbert-space truncation of the atomic degree of freedom. We discover that in both the square-well potential and oscillator potential, the optimal gauges for the ground-state energy of the QRM vary with respect to the cavity frequency, with the dipole gauge being optimal in the low-frequency limit and the Coulomb gauge in the high-frequency limit of the cavity frequency. Additionally, for higher energy levels, the optimal gauge asymptotically approaches the dipole gauge. However, for the dynamical quantity out-time-order correlator (OTOC), we find the necessity to introduce an optimal dynamical gauge. We determine the optimal dynamical gauge by minimizing the mean error between the two-level OTOC and the full Hamiltonian one. We expect that this study will contribute to a more profound understanding of the subtle relation between gauge choice and the dynamics of QED systems.

Optimizing single-photon quantum radar detection through partially postselected filtering

In this study, we explore an approach aimed at enhancing the transmission or reflection coefficients of absorbing materials through the utilization of joint measurements of entangled photon states. On the one hand, through the implementation of photon catalysis in the reflected channel, we can effectively modify the state of the transmission channel, leading to a notable improvement in the transmission ratio. Similarly, this approach holds potential for significantly amplifying the reflection ratio of absorbing materials, which is useful for detecting cooperative targets. On the other hand, employing statistical counting methods based on the technique of heralding on zero photons, we evaluate the influence of our reflection enhancement protocol for detecting noncooperative targets, which is validated through Monte Carlo simulations of a quantum radar setup affected by Gaussian white noise. Our results demonstrate a remarkable enhancement in the signal-to-noise ratio of imaging, albeit with an increase in mean-square error. These findings highlight the potential practical applications of our approach in the implementation of quantum radar.

Eigenstates in the self-organised criticality

We employ the eigen microstate approach to explore the self-organized criticality (SOC) in two celebrated sandpile models, namely, the BTW model and the Manna model. In both models, phase transitions from the absorbing-state to the critical state can be understood by the emergence of dominant eigen microstates with significantly increased weights. Spatial eigen microstates of avalanches can be uniformly characterized by a linear system size rescaling. The first temporal eigen microstates reveal scaling relations in both models. Furthermore, by finite-size scaling analysis of the first eigen microstate, we numerically estimate critical exponents i.e., $\sqrt{\sigma_0 w_1}/\tilde{v}_{1} \propto L^D$ and $\tilde{v}_{1} \propto L^{D(1-\tau_s)/2}$. Our findings could provide profound insights into eigen states of the universality and phase transition in non-equilibrium complex systems governed by self-organized criticality.

The Critical Behavior of Quantum Stirling Heat Engine

We investigate the performance of a Stirling cycle with a working substance (WS) modeled as the quantum Rabi model (QRM), exploring the impact of criticality on its efficiency. Our findings indicate that the criticality of the QRM has a positive effect on improving the efficiency of the Stirling cycle. Furthermore, we observe that the Carnot efficiency is asymptotically achievable as the WS parameter approaches the critical point, even when both the temperatures of the cold and hot reservoirs are finite. Additionally, we derive the critical behavior for the efficiency of the Stirling cycle, demonstrating how the efficiency asymptotically approaches the Carnot efficiency as the WS parameter approaches the critical point. Our work deepens the understanding of the impact of criticality on the performance of a Stirling heat engine.

Exploring unconventional quantum criticality in the p-wave-paired Aubry-Andr\'{e}-Harper model

We have investigated scaling properties near the quantum critical point between the extended phase and the critical phase in the Aubry-Andr\'{e}-Harper model with p-wave pairing, which have rarely been exploited as most investigations focus on the localization transition from the critical phase to the localized phase. We find that the spectrum averaged entanglement entropy and the generalized fidelity susceptibility act as eminent universal order parameters of the corresponding critical point without gap closing. We introduce a Widom scaling ansatz for these criticality probes to develop a unified theory of critical exponents and scaling functions. We thus extract the correlation-length critical exponent $\nu$ and the dynamical exponent $z$ through the finite-size scaling given the system sizes increase in the Fibonacci sequence. The retrieved values of $\nu \simeq 1.000$ and $z \simeq 3.610$ indicate that the transition from the extended phase to the critical phase belongs to a different universality class from the localization transition. Our approach sets the stage for exploring the unconventional quantum criticality and the associated universal information of quasiperiodic systems in state-of-the-art quantum simulation experiments.

Resilience of the superradiant phase against $\mathbf {A^2}$ effects in the quantum Rabi dimer

We explore the quantum criticality of a two-site model combining quantum Rabi models with hopping interaction. Through a combination of analytical and numerical approaches, we find that the model allows the appearance of a superradiant quantum phase transition (QPT) even in the presence of strong $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms, preventing single-site superradiance. In the two-site model the effect of $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms can be surmounted by the photon delocalization from hopping, and a reversed superradiant QPT occurs as a consequence of the competition between $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms and the hopping interaction. We characterize the phase diagram and scaling functions, and extract the critical exponents in the vicinity of the critical point, thus establishing the universal behavior of the second-order phase transition. Remarkably the effective hopping strength will be enhanced if more cavities are cascaded. We also prove that the multi-qubit counterpart of the quantum Rabi dimer, i.e., the Dicke dimer, has the same properties in beating the $\mathbf{A}^2$ effect. Our work provides a way to the study of phase transitions in presence of the $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms and offers the prospect of investigating quantum-criticality physics and quantum devices in many-body systems.

Quantum phase transitions and critical behaviors in the two-mode three-level quantum Rabi model

We explore an extended quantum Rabi model describing the interaction between a two-mode bosonic field and a three-level atom. Quantum phase transitions of this few degree of freedom model is found when the ratio $η$ of the atom energy scale to the bosonic field frequency approaches infinity. An analytical solution is provided when the two lowest-energy levels are degenerate. According to it, we recognize that the phase diagram of the model consists of three regions: one normal phase and two superradiant phases. The quantum phase transitions between the normal phase and the two superradiant phases are of second order relating to the spontaneous breaking of the discrete $Z_{2}$ symmetry. On the other hand, the quantum phase transition between the two different superradiant phases is discontinuous with a phase boundary line relating to the continuous $U(1)$ symmetry. For a large enough but finite $η$, the scaling function and critical exponents are derived analytically and verified numerically, from which the universality class of the model is identified.

An analytical variational method for the biased quantum Rabi model in the ultra-strong coupling regime

An analytical variational method for the ground state of the biased quantum Rabi model in the ultra-strong coupling regime is presented. This analytical variational method can be obtained by a unitary transformation or alternatively by assuming the form of ground state wave function. The key point of the method is to introduce a variational parameter $λ$, which can be determined by minimizing the energy functional. Using this method, we calculate physical observables with high accuracy in comparison with the numerical exact one. Our method evidently improves the results from the widely used general rotating-wave approximation (GRWA) in both qualitative and quantitative ways.

Variational generalized rotating-wave approximation in the two-qubit quantum Rabi model

We present an analytical method for the two-qubit quantum Rabi model. While still operating in the frame of the generalized rotating-wave approximation (GRWA), our method further embraces the idea of introducing variational parameters. The optimal value of the variational parameter is determined by minimizing the energy function of the ground state. Comparing with numerical exact results, we show that our method evidently improves the accuracy of the conventional GRWA in calculating fundamental physical quantities, such as energy spectra, mean photon number, and dynamics. Interestingly, the accuracy of our method allows us to reproduce the asymptotic behavior of mean photon number in large frequency ratio for the ground state and investigate the quasi-periodical structure of the time evolution, which are incapable of being predicted by the GRWA. The applicable parameter ranges cover the ultrastrong coupling regime, which will be helpful to recent experiments.

Condensation of Eigen Microstate in Statistical Ensemble and Phase Transition

In a statistical ensemble with $M$ microstates, we introduce an $M \times M$ correlation matrix with the correlations between microstates as its elements. Using eigenvectors of the correlation matrix, we can define eigen microstates of the ensemble. The normalized eigenvalue by $M$ represents the weight factor in the ensemble of the corresponding eigen microstate. In the limit $M \to \infty$, weight factors go to zero in the ensemble without localization of microstate. The finite limit of weight factor when $M \to \infty$ indicates a condensation of the corresponding eigen microstate. This indicates a phase transition with new phase characterized by the condensed eigen microstate. We propose a finite-size scaling relation of weight factors near critical point, which can be used to identify the phase transition and its universality class of general complex systems. The condensation of eigen microstate and the finite-size scaling relation of weight factors have been confirmed by the Monte Carlo data of one-dimensional and two-dimensional Ising models.

Polaron picture of the two-photon quantum Rabi model

We employ a polaron picture to investigate the properties of the two-photon quantum Rabi model (QRM), which describes a two-level or spin-half system coupled with a single bosonic mode by a two-photon process. In the polaron picture, the coupling in the two-photon process leads to spin-related asymmetry so that the original single bosonic mode splits into two separated frequency modes for the opposite spins, which correspond to two \textit{bare} polarons. Furthermore, the tunneling causes these two bare polarons to exchange their components with each other, thus leading to additional \textit{induced} polarons. According to this picture, the variational ground-state wave function of the two-photon QRM can be correctly constructed, with the ground-state energy and other physical observables in good agreement with the exact numerics in all the coupling regimes. Furthermore, generalization to multiple induced polarons involving higher orders in the tunneling effect provides a systematic way to yield a rapid convergence in accuracy even around the difficult spectral collapse point. In addition, the polaron picture provides a distinctive understanding of the spectral collapse behavior, that is about the existence of discrete energy levels apart from the collapsed spectrum at the spectral collapse point. This work illustrates that the polaron picture is helpful to capture the key physics in this nonlinear light-matter interaction model and indicates that this method can be applicable to more complicated QRM-related models.

Quantum criticality and state engineering in the simulated anisotropic quantum Rabi model

Promising applications of the anisotropic quantum Rabi model (AQRM) in broad parameter ranges are explored, which is realized with superconducting flux qubits simultaneously driven by two-tone time-dependent magnetic fields. Regarding the quantum phase transitions (QPTs), with assistant of fidelity susceptibility, we extract the scaling functions and the critical exponents, with which the universal scaling of the cumulant ratio is captured with rescaling of the parameters due to the anisotropy. Moreover, a fixed point of the cumulant ratio is predicted at the critical point of the AQRM. In respect to quantum information tasks, the generation of the macroscopic Schrödinger cat states and quantum controlled phase gates are investigated in the degenerate case of the AQRM, whose performance is also investigated by numerical calculation with practical parameters. Therefore, our results pave a way to explore distinct features of the AQRM in circuit QED systems for QPTs, quantum simulations and quantum information processings.

Effects of counter-rotating-wave terms on the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems

We investigate the effect of counter-rotating-wave terms on the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems by employing the hierarchical equations of motion in the framework of the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion approach. As illustrative examples, the non-Markovian memory effect of a qubit embedded in a bosonic and a fermionic environment at zero temperature are analyzed. It is found that the counter-rotating-wave terms are able to enhance the observed non-Markovianity no matter the environment is composed of bosons or fermions. This result suggests that the rotating-wave approximation may inevitably reduce the non-Markovianity in quantum open systems. Moreover, we find that the modification of the non-Markovianity due to the different statistical properties of environmental modes becomes larger with the increase of the system-environment coupling strength.

Frequency-renormalized multipolaron expansion for the quantum Rabi model

We present a frequency-renormalized multipolaron expansion method to explore the ground state of quantum Rabi model (QRM). The main idea is to take polaron as starting point to expand the ground state of QRM. The polarons are deformed and displaced oscillator states with variationally determined frequency-renormalization and displacement parameters. This method is an extension of the previously proposed polaron concept and the coherent state expansion used in the literature, which shows high efficiency in describing the physics of the QRM. The proposed method is expected to be useful for solving other more complicated light-matter interaction models.
