Testing the equality of estimable parameters across many populations

The comparison of a parameter in $k$ populations is a classical problem in statistics. Testing for the equality of means or variances are typical examples. Most procedures designed to deal with this problem assume that $k$ is fixed and that samples with increasing sample sizes are available from each population. This paper introduces and studies a test for the comparison of an estimable parameter across $k$ populations, when $k$ is large and the sample sizes from each population are small when compared with $k$. The proposed test statistic is asymptotically distribution-free under the null hypothesis of parameter homogeneity, enabling asymptotically exact inference without parametric assumptions. Additionally, the behaviour of the proposal is studied under alternatives. Simulations are conducted to evaluate its finite-sample performance, and a linear bootstrap method is implemented to improve its behaviour for small $k$. Finally, an application to a real dataset is presented.

Eigenvalues approximation of integral covariance operators with applications to weighted $L^2$ statistics

Finding the eigenvalues connected to the covariance operator of a centred Hilbert-space valued Gaussian process is genuinely considered a hard problem in several mathematical disciplines. In statistics this problem arises for instance in the asymptotic null distribution of goodness-of-fit test statistics of weighted $L^2$-type. For this problem we present the Rayleigh-Ritz method to approximate the eigenvalues. The usefulness of these approximations is shown by high lightening implications such as critical value approximation and theoretical comparison of test statistics by means of Bahadur efficiencies.

A new class of tests for multinormality with i.i.d. and Garch data based on the empirical moment generating function

We generalize a recent class of tests for univariate normality that are based on the empirical moment generating function to the multivariate setting, thus obtaining a class of affine invariant, consistent and easy-to-use goodness-of-fit tests for multinormality. The test statistics are suitably weighted $L^2$-statistics, and we provide their asymptotic behavior both for i.i.d. observations as well as in the context of testing that the innovation distribution of a multivariate GARCH model is Gaussian. We study the finite-sample behavior of the new tests, compare the criteria with alternative existing procedures, and apply the new procedure to a data set of monthly log returns.

Characterizations of multinormality and corresponding tests of fit, including for Garch models

We provide novel characterizations of multivariate normality that incorporate both the characteristic function and the moment generating function, and we employ these results to construct a class of affine invariant, consistent and easy-to-use goodness-of-fit tests for normality. The test statistics are suitably weighted $L^2$-statistics, and we provide their asymptotic behavior both for i.i.d. observations as well as in the context of testing that the innovation distribution of a multivariate GARCH model is Gaussian. We also study the finite-sample behavior of the new tests and compare the new criteria with alternative existing tests.
