Exploring fixed points and eigenstates of quantum systems with reinforcement learning

We introduce a reinforcement learning algorithm designed to identify the fixed points of a given quantum operation. The method iteratively constructs the unitary transformation that maps the computational basis onto the basis of fixed points through a reward-penalty scheme based on quantum measurements. In cases where the operation corresponds to a Hamiltonian evolution, this task reduces to determining the Hamiltonian eigenstates. The algorithm is first benchmarked on random Hamiltonians acting on two and three qubits and then applied to many-body systems of up to six qubits, including the transverse-field Ising model and the all-to-all pairing Hamiltonian. In both cases, the algorithm is demonstrated to perform successfully; in the pairing model, it can also reveal hidden symmetries, which can be exploited to restrict learning to specific symmetry sectors. Finally, we discuss the possibility of post-selecting high-fidelity states even when full convergence has not been reached.

Impact of Amplitude and Phase Damping Noise on Quantum Reinforcement Learning: Challenges and Opportunities

Quantum machine learning (QML) is an emerging field with significant potential, yet it remains highly susceptible to noise, which poses a major challenge to its practical implementation. While various noise mitigation strategies have been proposed to enhance algorithmic performance, the impact of noise is not fully understood. In this work, we investigate the effects of amplitude and phase damping noise on a quantum reinforcement learning algorithm. Through analytical and numerical analysis, we assess how these noise sources influence the learning process and overall performance. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of noise in quantum learning algorithms and suggest that, rather than being purely detrimental, unavoidable noise may present opportunities to enhance QML processes.

Benefits of Open Quantum Systems for Quantum Machine Learning

Quantum machine learning is a discipline that holds the promise of revolutionizing data processing and problem-solving. However, dissipation and noise arising from the coupling with the environment are commonly perceived as major obstacles to its practical exploitation, as they impact the coherence and performance of the utilized quantum devices. Significant efforts have been dedicated to mitigate and control their negative effects on these devices. This Perspective takes a different approach, aiming to harness the potential of noise and dissipation instead of combatting them. Surprisingly, it is shown that these seemingly detrimental factors can provide substantial advantages in the operation of quantum machine learning algorithms under certain circumstances. Exploring and understanding the implications of adapting quantum machine learning algorithms to open quantum systems opens up pathways for devising strategies that effectively leverage noise and dissipation. The recent works analyzed in this Perspective represent only initial steps towards uncovering other potential hidden benefits that dissipation and noise may offer. As exploration in this field continues, significant discoveries are anticipated that could reshape the future of quantum computing.

System size synchronization

In this work we bring out the existence of a novel kind of synchronization associated to the size of a complex system. A dichotomic random jump process associated to the dynamics of an externally driven stochastic system with $N$ coupled units is constructed. We define an output frequency and phase diffusion coefficient. System size synchronization occurs when the average output frequency is locked to the external one and the average phase diffusion coefficient shows a very deep minimum for a range of system sizes. Analytical and numerical procedures are introduced to study the phenomenon, and the results describe successfully the existence of system size synchronization.
