Responsible developments and networking research: a reflection beyond a paper ethical statement

Several recent initiatives have proposed new directions for research practices and their operations in the computer science community, from updated codes of conduct that clarify the use of AI-assisted tools to the inclusion of ethical statements and the organization of working groups on the environmental footprint of digitalization. In this position paper, we focus on the specific case of networking research. We reflect on the technical realization of the community and its incidence beyond techno-centric contributions. In particular, we structure the discussion around two frameworks that were recently developed in different contexts to describe the sense of engagement and responsibilities to which the practitioner of a computing-related area may be confronted.

Toward Evaluating the Complexity to Operate a Network

The task of determining which network architectures provide the best ratio in terms of operation and management efforts \textit{vs.} performance guarantees is not trivial. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of operating different types of architectures from the perspective of the space of network parameters that need to be monitored and configured. We present OPLEX, a novel framework based on the analysis of YANG data models of network implementations that enables operators to compare architecture options based on the dimension of the parameter space. We implement OPLEX as part of an operator-friendly tool that can be used to determine the space associated with an architecture in an automatic and flexible way. The benefits of the proposed framework are demonstrated in the use case of Internet Exchange Point (IXP) network architectures, for which we take advantage of the rich set of publicly available data. We also exploit the results of a survey and direct consultations we conducted with operators and vendors of IXPs on their perception of complexity when operating different architectures. OPLEX is flexible, builds upon data models with widespread usage in the community, and provides a practical solution geared towards operators for characterizing the complexity of network architecture options.

Shaping the Internet: 10 Years of IXP Growth

Over the past decade, IXPs have been playing a key role in enabling interdomain connectivity. Their traffic volumes have grown dramatically and their physical presence has spread throughout the world. While the relevance of IXPs is undeniable, their long-term contribution to the shaping of the current Internet is not fully understood yet. In this paper, we look into the impact on Internet routes of the intense IXP growth over the last decade. We observe that while in general IXPs only have a small effect in path shortening, very large networks do enjoy a clear IXP-enabled path reduction. We also observe a diversion of the routes, away from the central Tier-1 ASes supported by IXPs. Interestingly, we also find that whereas IXP membership has grown, large and central ASes have steadily moved away from public IXP peerings, whereas smaller ones have embraced them. Despite all this changes, we find though that a clear hierarchy remains, with a small group of highly central networks
