Additive Chow groups of schemes

We show how to make the additive Chow groups of Bloch-Esnault, Ruelling and Park into a graded module for Bloch's higher Chow groups, in the case of a smooth projective variety over a field. This yields a a projective bundle formula as well as a blow-up formula for the additive Chow groups of a smooth projective variety. In case the base-field admits resolution of singularieties, these properties allow us to apply the technique of Guille'n and Navarro Aznar to define the additive Chow groups "with log poles at infinity" for an arbitrary finite-type k-scheme X. This theory has the usual properties of a Borel-Moore theory on finite type k-schemes: it is covariantly functorial for projective morphisms, contravariantly functorial for morphisms of smooth schemes, and has a projective bundle formula, homotopy property, Mayer-Vietoris and localization sequences. Finally, we show that the regulator map defined by Park from the additive Chow groups of 1-cycles to the modules of absolute Kaehler differentials of an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero is surjective, giving an evidence of conjectured isomorphism between these two groups.

On a spectral sequence for equivariant K-theory

We apply the machinery developed by the first-named author to the K-theory of coherent G-sheaves on a finite type G-scheme X over a field, where G is a finite group. This leads to a definition of G-equivariant higher Chow groups (different from the Chow groups of classifying spaces constructed by Totaro and generalized to arbitrary X by Edidin-Graham) and an Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence from the G-equivariant higher Chow groups to the higher K-theory of coherent G-sheaves on X. This spectral sequence generalizes the spectral sequence from motivic cohomology to K-theory constructed by Bloch-Lichtenbaum and Friedlander-Suslin.

Motivic Tubular Neighborhoods

We construct motivic versions of the classical tubular neighborhood and the punctured tubular neighborhood, and give applications to the construction of tangential base-points for mixed Tate motives, algebraic gluing of curves with boundary components, and limit motives.

The homotopy coniveau tower

We examine the "homotopy coniveau tower" for a general cohomology theory on smooth k-schemes and give a new proof that the layers of this tower for K-theory agree with motivic cohomology. In addition, the homotopy coniveau tower agrees with Voevodsky's slice tower for $S^1$-spectra, giving a proof of a connectedness conjecture of Voevodsky. The homotopy coniveau tower construction extends to a tower of functors on the Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category, and we identify this $P^1$-stable homotopy coniveau tower with Voevodsky's slice filtration for $P^1$-spectra. We also show that the 0th layer for the motivic sphere spectrum is the motivic cohomology spectrum, which gives the layers for a general $P^1$-spectrum the structure of a module over motivic cohomology. This recovers and extends recent results of Voevodsky on the 0th layer of the slice filtration, and yields a spectral sequence that is reminiscent of the classical Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence.

Chow's moving lemma and the homotopy coniveau tower

We consider the "homotopy coniveau tower" for an arbitrary cohomology theory on smooth varieties over a field or a Dedekind domain. This tower is a generalization of the construction used by Bloch-Lichtenbaum and Friedlander-Suslin in their studies of the spectral sequence from motivic cohomology to K-theory. Our main result is that an application of the classical Chow's moving lemma and some categorical constructions make the homotopy coniveau tower strictly functorial when the base is a field, and functorial in the homotopy category when the base is a Dedekind domain.

Algebraic cobordism

Together with F. Morel, we have constructed in \cite{CR, Cobord1, Cobord2} a theory of {\em algebraic cobordism}, an algebro-geometric version of the topological theory of complex cobordism. In this paper, we give a survey of the construction and main results of this theory; in the final section, we propose a candidate for a theory of higher algebraic cobordism, which hopefully agrees with the cohomology theory represented by the $¶^1$-spectrum $MGL$ in the Morel-Voevodsky stable homotopy category.

Decomposition of the diagonal and eigenvalues of Frobenius for Fano hypersurfaces

Let $X\subset ¶^n$ be a possibly singular hypersurface of degree $d\le n$, defined over a finite field $k$. We show that the diagonal, suitably interpreted, is decomposable. This gives a proof that the eigenvalues of the Frobenius action on its $\ell$-adic cohomology $H^i(\bar{X}, \Q_\ell)$, for $\ell \neq {\rm char}(k)$, are divisible by $q$, without using the result on the existence of rational points by Ax and Katz.

The Steinberg Curve

We construct 0-cycles on the product of 2 elliptic curves, which are not detectable by Bloch's analytic motivic cohomology.
