Fragmentation contributions to transverse nucleon spin observables in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering at NLO

We study the spin-dependent cross section in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon collisions, $\ell + N^\uparrow\to \ell+h+X$. We focus on the cross section that is integrated over the transverse momentum $P_{h\perp}$ of the detected unpolarized hadron. We analyze this cross section at large virtuality $Q^2$ of the exchanged virtual photon within the framework of collinear twist-3 factorization in perturbative QCD. The two main transverse spin observables, the single nucleon spin asymmetry (SSA) and the double longitudinal lepton-transverse nucleon spin asymmetry (DSA), both receive contributions from chiral-odd twist-3 three-parton fragmentation functions. We study these fragmentation contributions to Next-To-Leading Order (NLO) in perturbative QCD. We explicitly observe that collinear twist-3 factorization holds for these contributions at the one-loop level. We confront our NLO formulae with HERMES data and provide numerical predictions for EIC kinematics.

Transverse Nucleon Single-Spin Asymmetry for Single-Inclusive Hadron and Jet Production at NLO Accuracy

We investigate the single-spin asymmetry for the single-inclusive production of hadrons and jets in collisions of transversely polarized nucleons and unpolarized leptons, $\ell N^\uparrow \to (h\,\mathrm{or\,jet})X$. We compute the spin-dependent cross section within collinear twist-3 factorization in perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. In this approach, multiparton correlations generate a non-vanishing effect. For the present paper, we focus on correlations in the nucleon initial-state rather than in the fragmentation process. We explicitly verify that collinear twist-3 factorization is valid at the one-loop level. Our analytical results show that at NLO the relevant multiparton correlation functions in the nucleon are probed on their full support in momentum fractions. Our numerical analysis for collisions at the Electron-Ion Collider indicates that the NLO corrections can be large and are sensitive to the functional form of the twist-3 correlation functions.

NLO corrections and factorization for transverse single-spin asymmetries

We present next-to-leading order QCD corrections for the cross sections for $\ell p^\uparrow\to hX$, $\ell p^\uparrow\to {\mathrm{jet}}X$ with transversely polarized initial protons. These cross sections are known to be power-suppressed in QCD and probe twist-3 parton correlation functions in the proton. Our calculation exhibits the full complexity of a perturbative QCD analysis beyond leading power, involving in particular various derivatives of the parton correlation functions. We demonstrate that collinear factorization for these single-spin observables holds at one loop. We also present exploratory phenomenological results for the NLO single-spin asymmetry in $ep^\uparrow\to hX$ and compare to data from the HERMES experiment.

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in $γ$SIDIS as a direct probe of quark-gluon-quark longitudinal momentum structure

Transverse single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic production of isolated photons ($γ$SIDIS), $A_{UT}^{γ{\rm SIDIS}}$, provide an unprecedented opportunity to extract the quark-gluon-quark correlators $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ point-by-point in their full support $x,x'$. We utilize realistic models for these functions, based on input from the Sivers transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function and imposing constraints from the $d_2$ matrix element calculated in lattice QCD, in order to provide numerical estimates for $A_{UT}^{γ{\rm SIDIS}}$ at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We thoroughly explore the EIC phase space in order to isolate in which regions the asymmetry can be sizable, finding it can be as much as $10\%$ or larger for certain kinematics. Given that $F_{FT}(x,x')$ and $G_{FT}(x,x')$ are basically unknown, $A_{UT}^{γ{\rm SIDIS}}$ will be an important future measurement to learn about multi-parton correlations in the nucleon.

Probing the polarized photon content of the proton in $ep$ collisions at the EIC

We study the single-inclusive production of prompt photons in electron proton collisions, $ep \to γX $, for kinematics relevant at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We perform a perturbative calculation of the differential cross section to next-to-leading order in QCD and to lowest order in QED. We consider unpolarized collisions as well as scattering of longitudinally polarized incident electrons and protons. We show that the cross sections are sensitive to the parton distribution functions of photons inside the proton, which we find to generate the dominant contributions in certain kinematical regions at the EIC. We also investigate the effects of photon isolation on the unpolarized and polarized cross sections.

TMD Handbook

This handbook provides a comprehensive review of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions and fragmentation functions, commonly referred to as transverse momentum distributions (TMDs). TMDs describe the distribution of partons inside the proton and other hadrons with respect to both their longitudinal and transverse momenta. They provide unique insight into the internal momentum and spin structure of hadrons, and are a key ingredient in the description of many collider physics cross sections. Understanding TMDs requires a combination of theoretical techniques from quantum field theory, nonperturbative calculations using lattice QCD, and phenomenological analysis of experimental data. The handbook covers a wide range of topics, from theoretical foundations to experimental analyses, as well as recent developments and future directions. It is intended to provide an essential reference for researchers and graduate students interested in understanding the structure of hadrons and the dynamics of partons in high energy collisions.

Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions

This volume is a collection of contributions for the 7-week program "Probing Nucleons and Nuclei in High Energy Collisions" that was held at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle, WA, USA, from October 1 until November 16, 2018. The program was dedicated to the physics of the Electron Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the USA. These proceedings are organized by chapters, corresponding to the weeks of the program: Week I, Generalized parton distributions; Week II, Transverse spin and TMDs; Week III, Longitudinal spin; Week IV, Symposium week; Weeks V & VI, eA collisions; Week VII, pA and AA collisions. We hope these proceedings will be useful to readers as a compilation of EIC-related science at the end of the second decade of the XXI century.

Transverse Force Imaging

While twist-2 GPDs allow for a determination of the distribution of partons on the transverse plane, twist-3 GPDs contain quark-gluon correlations that provide information about the average transverse color Lorentz force acting on quarks. As an example, we use the nonforward generalization of $g_T(x)$, to illustrate how twist-3 GPDs can provide transverse position information about that force.

The transverse nucleon single-spin asymmetry for the semi-inclusive production of photons in lepton-nucleon scattering

We study the semi-inclusive production of real, high-$p_T$, isolated photons in unpolarized and polarized lepton-proton collisions, $\ell p\to \ellγX$. In particular we analyze the transverse nucleon single-spin asymmetry within the collinear twist-3 formalism in perturbative QCD to leading order (LO) accuracy. We find that this spin asymmetry is generated by twist-3 dynamical quark-gluon-quark ($qgq$) correlations in the nucleon through the so-called soft-fermion and hard pole contributions. Hence, this process unprecedentedly allows for a point-by-point scan of the support of the dynamical $qgq$ twist-3 matrix elements $F_{FT}(x,x^\prime)$ and $G_{FT}(x,x^\prime)$ in lepton-nucleon scattering experiments.

Studies of gluon TMDs and their evolution using quarkonium-pair production at the LHC

$J/ψ$- or $Υ$-pair production at the LHC are promising processes to study the gluon transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) which remain very poorly known. In this article, we improve on previous results by including the TMD evolution in the computation of the observables such as the pair-transverse-momentum spectrum and asymmetries arising from the linear polarization of gluons inside unpolarized protons. We show that the azimuthal asymmetries generated by the gluon polarization are reduced compared to the tree level case but are still of measurable size (in the 5%-10% range). Such asymmetries should be measurable in the available data sets of $J/ψ$ pairs and in the future data sets of the high-luminosity LHC for $Υ$ pairs.

Transverse Force Tomography

While twist-2 GPDs allow for a determination of the distribution of partons on the transverse plane, twist-3 GPDs contain quark-gluon correlations that provide information about the average transverse color Lorentz force acting on quarks. We demonstrate how twist-3 GPDs can be used to provide transverse position information about that force.

Pinning down the linearly-polarised gluons inside unpolarised protons using quarkonium-pair production at the LHC

We show that the production of J/psi or Upsilon pairs in unpolarised pp collisions is currently the best process to measure the momentum-distribution of linearly-polarised gluons inside unpolarised protons through the study of azimuthal asymmetries. Not only the short-distance coefficients for such reactions induce the largest possible cos 4 phi modulations, but analysed data are already available. Among the various final states previously studied in unpolarised pp collisions within the TMD factorisation approach, di-J/psi production exhibits by far the largest asymmetries, up to 50% in the region studied by the ATLAS and CMS experiments. In addition, we use the very recent LHCb data at 13 TeV to perform the first fit of the unpolarised transverse-momentum-dependent gluon distribution.

Polarized hyperon production in single-inclusive electron-positron annihilation at next-to-leading order

We study the production of polarized $Λ$-hyperons in electron-positron annihilation. We are particularly interested in the transverse-spin dependence of the cross section for unpolarized incident electron-positron pairs. At high energies this process may be described in the collinear twist-3 framework, where the hadronization transition of partons into a transversely polarized $Λ$-hyperon can be written in terms of collinear twist-3 fragmentation matrix elements. We calculate the hard partonic cross sections and interference terms in perturbative QCD to next-to-leading order accuracy. We find that the QCD equation of motion plays a crucial role in our analysis. As a byproduct, assuming the validity of QCD factorization for twist-3 observables at next-to-leading order, we derive the evolution equation for the relevant twist-3 fragmentation matrix element.

Double-Longitudinal Spin Asymmetry in Single-Inclusive Lepton Scattering at NLO

We calculate the double-spin asymmetries $A_{\mathrm{LL}}$ for the processes $\ell N\to h X$ and $\ell N\to {\mathrm{jet}}\, X$ at next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD. We compare our theoretical results for $A_{\mathrm{LL}}$ to data from the SLAC E155 experiment, finding only partially satisfactory agreement. We conclude that measurements of $A_{\mathrm{LL}}$ and the relevant polarized and unpolarized cross sections should be performed at the present-day fixed-target lepton scattering experiments, as well as at a future electron ion collider, in order to verify our understanding of this process. We present predictions of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetries for these experiments.

Associated production of a dilepton and a $Υ(J/ψ)$ at the LHC as a probe of gluon transverse momentum dependent distributions

We discuss the impact on the study of gluon transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) of the associated production of a lepton pair and a $Υ$ (or a $J/ψ$) in unpolarised proton-proton collisions, $pp\to {\cal Q} \, \ell \bar{\ell} X$, at LHC energies, where one can assume that such final states are dominantly induced by gluon fusion. If the transverse momentum of the quarkonium-dilepton system - namely, the transverse momentum imbalance of the quarkonium state and the lepton pair - is small, the corresponding cross sections can be calculated within the framework of TMD factorisation. Using the helicity formalism, we show in detail how these cross sections are connected to the moments of two independent TMDs: the distribution of unpolarised gluons, $f_1^g$, and the distribution of linearly polarised gluons, $h_1^{\perp g}$. We complete our exhaustive derivation of these general relations with a phenomenological analysis of the feasibility of the TMD extraction, as well as some outlooks.

Proper definition and evolution of generalized transverse momentum distributions

We consider one of the most fundamental sets of hadronic matrix elements, namely the generalized transverse momentum distributions (GTMDs), and argue that their existing definitions lack proper evolution properties. By exploiting the similarity of GTMDs with the much better understood transverse momentum distributions, we argue that the existing definitions of GTMDs have to include an additional dependence on soft gluon radiation in order to render them properly defined. With this, we manage to obtain the evolution kernel of all (un)polarized quark and gluon GTMDs, which turns out to be spin independent. As a byproduct, all large logarithms can be resummed up to next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy with the currently known perturbative ingredients.
