Random number generation from a self-chaotic broad-area VCSEL

The nonlinear dynamics of transverse and polarization modes of a broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (BA-VCSEL) exhibit, without any external perturbation, chaos with high correlation dimension, large bandwidth (BW), and good spectral flatness over a wide range of currents. We leverage this for high bit-rate entropy generation and random number generation (RNG), passing the NIST tests with rates up to 150~Gb/s, and observe a correlation between the correlation dimension and the number of passed NIST tests. The RNG shows consistent performance across a wide range of parameters. In contrast to other setups, our system does not require optical feedback or optical injection to generate chaos, making it simple, compact and robust.

Synchronization of complex spatio-temporal dynamics with lasers

Synchronization is the spontaneous alignment of the dynamics of weakly-coupled oscillators. In addition to temporal dynamics like periodic and chaotic oscillations, also the spatio-temporal dynamics of spatially-extended systems like wildlife populations can synchronize. We exploit here the intrinsic spatio-temporal complex dynamics of broad area lasers to demonstrate such synchronization at lab-scale. Broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (BA-VCSELs) exhibit chaos from the nonlinear coupling between laser modes with different spatial profiles and polarization. When coupling two BA-VCSELs, several synchronization and anti-synchronization regimes are observed, highlighting the complex interplay between oscillating modes with different frequencies and spatial patterns. The correlation coefficient varies between 0.2 and 0.9 depending on the dynamics and on the time scale under analysis. Besides its fundamental interest, our experiment with commercial devices marks the first step towards real-world spatial multiplexing in multiple user physical-layer secure communication based on chaos synchronization.

Polarization and tranverse mode nonlinear dynamics in a multimode VCSEL

We theoretically analyze the nonlinear dynamics and routes to chaos in a multimode vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (MM-VCSEL) in free-running operation. Including higher order transverse modes (TMs) results in additional bifurcations at higher currents not found for single-mode VCSELs (SM-VCSELs). The resulting dynamics involve competition between modes with different transverse profiles and polarization and show good qualitative agreement with recent experiments.

Chaos from a free-running broad-area VCSEL

We experimentally report on the detection of chaos from a free-running commercial broad-area VCSEL without the need for external perturbation such as optical feedback, injection or current modulation. The evolution of nonlinear dynamics leading to chaotic behavior is studied, and the system's complexity is characterized using chaos titration and correlation dimension. We link the occurence of chaos with the complex interplay between the spatial laser modes competition and polarization dynamics.

Complexity of chaotic optical frequency combs

The dynamics of a single-mode semiconductor laser induced by the optical injection of a frequency comb are analyzed through the lens of complexity. In particular, the focus is dynamics outside the injection-locking region. Permutation entropy (P.E.) and chaos bandwidth (CBW) are used to quantify complexity. Various numerically simulated system outputs across the frequency detuning range and for different injection strengths are considered. Numerically simulated outputs from a single-mode injection system in the absence of comb injection are compared to comment on the origin of the reported complexity. Furthermore, experimental outputs are used to confirm the findings. Despite the presence of periodic dynamics originating from the frequency comb, the presented system generates remarkably high complex outputs with P.E. up to 0.99 maintained over an extended period of observation and long timescales with CBW up to 25 GHz.

High-resolution dynamic consistency analysis of photonic time-delay reservoir computer

We numerically investigate a time-delayed reservoir computer architecture based on a single mode laser diode with optical injection and optical feedback. Through a high-resolution parametric analysis, we reveal unforeseen regions of high dynamical consistency. We demonstrate furthermore that the best computing performance is not achieved at the edge of consistency as previously suggested in a coarser parametric analysis. This region of high consistency and optimal reservoir performances are highly sensitive to the data input modulation format

Optical chaos synchronisation in a cascaded injection experiment

We experimentally study the synchronization of chaos generated by semiconductor lasers in a cascade injection configuration, i.e., a tunable master laser is used to generate chaos by optical injection in a transmitter laser that injects light into a receiver laser. Chaos synchronization between the transmitter and the receiver lasers is achieved with a correlation coefficient of 90 % for a measurement bandwidth up to 35 GHz. Two parameter regions of good synchronization are found, corresponding to the alignment of the oscillation frequencies of the receiver laser with either the transmitter laser or the master laser.

Complex nonlinear dynamics of polarization and transverse modes in a broad-area VCSEL

Lasers can exhibit nonlinear and chaotic dynamics driven by the interaction of multiple lasing modes, and investigating the different scenarios of mode competition and bifurcations of their dynamics is of great interest on a fundamental level as well as in view of applications. We study the dynamics of a broad-area vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) in solitary continuous-wave operation with a comprehensive investigation of its polarization state, lasing spectra, near-field distributions, and temporal dynamics. Fluctuations at the frequency of birefringence splitting and other frequency components develop in a series of bifurcations. The bifurcations coincide with changes of the transverse lasing modes and/or the polarization state, demonstrating the importance of both the spatial and polarization degrees of freedom for mode competition. As a consequence, the inherent nonlinear dynamics of broad-area VCSELs is significantly more complex than the dynamics of VCSELs with a single spatial mode.

Chaos in Magnetic Nanocontact Vortex Oscillators

We present an experimental study of spin-torque driven vortex self-oscillations in magnetic nanocontacts. We find that above a certain threshold in applied currents, the vortex gyration around the nanocontact is modulated by relaxation oscillations, which involve periodic reversals of the vortex core. This modulation leads to the appearance of commensurate but also more interestingly here, incommensurate states, which are characterized by devil's staircases in the modulation frequency. We use frequency- and time-domain measurements together with advanced time-series analyses to provide experimental evidence of chaos in incommensurate states of vortex oscillations, in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Pattern generation and symbolic dynamics in a nanocontact vortex oscillator

Harnessing chaos or intrinsic nonlinear behaviours from dynamical systems is a promising avenue for the development of unconventional information processing technologies. However, the exploitation of such features in spintronic devices has not been attempted despite the many theoretical and experimental evidence of nonlinear behaviour of the magnetization dynamics in nanomagnetic systems. Here, we propose a first step in that direction by unveiling and characterizing the patterns and symbolic dynamics originating from the nonlinear chaotic time-resolved electrical signals generated experimentally by a nanocontact vortex oscillator (NCVO). We use advanced filtering methods to dissociate nonlinear deterministic patterns from thermal fluctuations and show that the emergence of chaos results in the unpredictable alternation of simple oscillatory patterns controlled by the NCVO's core-polarity switching. With phase-space reconstruction techniques, we perform a symbolic analysis of the time series to assess the level of complexity and entropy generated in the chaotic regime. We find that at the centre of its incommensurate region, it can exhibit maximal entropy and complexity. This suggests that NCVOs are promising nonlinear nanoscale source of entropy that could be harnessed for information processing.

Chaotic dynamics in a macrospin spin-torque nano-oscillator with delayed feedback

A theoretical study of delayed feedback in spin-torque nano-oscillators is presented. A macrospin geometry is considered, where self-sustained oscillations are made possible by spin transfer torques associated with spin currents flowing perpendicular to the film plane. By tuning the delay and amplification of the self-injected signal, we identify dynamical regimes in this system such as chaos, switching between precession modes with complex transients, and oscillator death. Such delayed feedback schemes open up a new field of exploration for such oscillators, where the complex transient states might find important applications in information processing.

Physics and Applications of Laser Diode Chaos

An overview of chaos in laser diodes is provided which surveys experimental achievements in the area and explains the theory behind the phenomenon. The fundamental physics underpinning this behaviour and also the opportunities for harnessing laser diode chaos for potential applications are discussed. The availability and ease of operation of laser diodes, in a wide range of configurations, make them a convenient test-bed for exploring basic aspects of nonlinear and chaotic dynamics. It also makes them attractive for practical tasks, such as chaos-based secure communications and random number generation. Avenues for future research and development of chaotic laser diodes are also identified.

Deterministic polarization chaos from a laser diode

Fifty years after the invention of the laser diode and fourty years after the report of the butterfly effect - i.e. the unpredictability of deterministic chaos, it is said that a laser diode behaves like a damped nonlinear oscillator. Hence no chaos can be generated unless with additional forcing or parameter modulation. Here we report the first counter-example of a free-running laser diode generating chaos. The underlying physics is a nonlinear coupling between two elliptically polarized modes in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. We identify chaos in experimental time-series and show theoretically the bifurcations leading to single- and double-scroll attractors with characteristics similar to Lorenz chaos. The reported polarization chaos resembles at first sight a noise-driven mode hopping but shows opposite statistical properties. Our findings open up new research areas that combine the high speed performances of microcavity lasers with controllable and integrated sources of optical chaos.

Physical random bit generation from chaotic solitary laser diode

We demonstrate the physical generation of random bits at high bit rates (> 100 Gb/s) using optical chaos from a solitary laser diode and therefore without the complex addition of either external optical feedback or injection. This striking result is obtained despite the low dimension and relatively small bandwidth of the laser chaos, i.e. two characteristics that have been so far considered as limiting the performances of optical chaos-based applications. We unambiguously attribute the successful randomness at high speed to the physics of the laser chaotic polarization dynamics and the resulting growth rate of the dynamical entropy.
