On the uniqueness of minimizers for a class of variational problems with Polyconvex integrand

We prove existence and uniqueness of minimizers for a family of energy functionals that arises in Elasticity and involves polyconvex integrands over a certain subset of displacement maps. This work extends previous results by Awi and Gangbo to a larger class of integrands. First, we study these variational problems over displacements for which the determinant is positive. Second, we consider a limit case in which the functionals are degenerate. In that case, the set of admissible displacements reduces to that of incompressible displacements which are measure preserving maps. Finally, we establish that the minimizer over the set of incompressible maps may be obtained as a limit of minimizers corresponding to a sequence of minimization problems over general displacements provided we have enough regularity on the dual problems. We point out that these results defy the direct methods of the calculus of variations.

On a model of axisymmetric flows in a free boundary domain

We consider a model of axisymmetric flows for a free boundary vortex embedded in a statically stable fluid at rest. We identify the boundary of the vortex by solving a variational problem. Then, we reduce the analysis of the dynamics of the vortex to the study of a class of continuity equations for which we construct a solution.

A variational time discretization for the compressible Euler equations

We introduce a variational time discretization for the multi-dimensional gas dynamics equations, in the spirit of minimizing movements for curves of maximal slope. Each timestep requires the minimization of a functional measuring the acceleration of fluid elements, over the cone of monotone transport maps. We prove convergence to measure-valued solutions for the pressureless gas dynamics and the compressible Euler equations. For one space dimension, we obtain sticky particle solutions for the pressureless case.

Conservation laws arising in the study of forward-forward Mean-Field Games

We consider forward-forward Mean Field Game (MFG) models that arise in numerical approximations of stationary MFGs. First, we establish a link between these models and a class of hyperbolic conservation laws as well as certain nonlinear wave equations. Second, we investigate existence and long-time behavior of solutions for such models.

One-dimensional, forward-forward mean-field games with congestion

Here, we consider one-dimensional forward-forward mean-field games (MFGs) with congestion, which were introduced to approximate stationary MFGs. We use methods from the theory of conservation laws to examine the qualitative properties of these games. First, by computing Riemann invariants and corresponding invariant regions, we develop a method to prove lower bounds for the density. Next, by combining the lower bound with an entropy function, we prove the existence of global solutions for parabolic forward-forward MFGs. Finally, we construct traveling-wave solutions, which settles in a negative way the convergence problem for forward-forward MFGs. A similar technique gives the existence of time-periodic solutions for non-monotonic MFGs.

One-dimensional forward-forward mean-field games

While the general theory for the terminal-initial value problem for mean-field games (MFGs) has achieved a substantial progress, the corresponding forward-forward problem is still poorly understood - even in the one-dimensional setting. Here, we consider one-dimensional forward-forward MFGs, study the existence of solutions and their long-time convergence. First, we discuss the relation between these models and systems of conservation laws. In particular, we identify new conserved quantities and study some qualitative properties of these systems. Next, we introduce a class of wave-like equations that are equivalent to forward-forward MFGs, and we derive a novel formulation as a system of conservation laws. For first-order logarithmic forward-forward MFG, we establish the existence of a global solution. Then, we consider a class of explicit solutions and show the existence of shocks. Finally, we examine parabolic forward-forward MFGs and establish the long-time convergence of the solutions.

A Simple Proof of Global Existence for the 1D Pressureless Gas Dynamics Equations

Sticky particle solutions to the one-dimensional pressureless gas dynamics equations can be constructed by a suitable metric projection onto the cone of monotone maps, as was shown in recent work by Natile and Savaré. Their proof uses a discrete particle approximation and stability properties for first order differential inclusions. Here we give a more direct proof that relies on a result by Haraux on the differentiability of metric projections. We apply the same method also to the one-dimensional Euler-Poisson system, obtaining a new proof for the global existence of weak solutions.

On a model of forced axisymmetric flows

In this work, we consider a model of forced axisymmetric flows which is derived from the inviscid Boussinesq equations. What makes these equations unusual is the boundary conditions they are expected to satisfy and the fact that the boundary is part of the unknown. We show that these flows give rise to an unusual Monge-Ampere equations for which we prove the existence and the uniqueness of a variational solution. We take advantage of these Monge-Ampere equations and construct a solution to the model.
