The connectivity at infinity of a manifold and $L^{q,p}$-Sobolev inequalities

The purpose of this paper is to give a self-contained proof that a complete manifold with more than one end never supports an $L^{q,p}$-Sobolev inequality ($2 \leq p$, $q\leq p^{*}$), provided the negative part of its Ricci tensor is small (in a suitable spectral sense). In the route, we discuss potential theoretic properties of the ends of a manifold enjoying an $L^{q,p}$-Sobolev inequality.

The Binet-Legendre Metric in Finsler Geometry

For every Finsler metric $F$ we associate a Riemannian metric $g_F$ (called the Binet-Legendre metric). The transformation $F \mapsto g_F$ is $C^0$-stable and has good smoothness properties, in contrast to previous constructions. The Riemannian metric $g_F$ also behaves nicely under conformal or bilipshitz deformation of the Finsler metric $F$. These properties makes it a powerful tool in Finsler geometry and we illustrate that by solving a number of named Finslerian geometric problems. We also generalize and give new and shorter proofs of a number of known results. In particular we answer a question of M. Matsumoto about local conformal mapping between two Minkowski spaces, we describe all possible conformal self maps and all self similarities on a Finsler manifold. We also classify all compact conformally flat Finsler manifolds, solve a conjecture of S. Deng and Z. Hou on the Berwaldian character of locally symmetric Finsler spaces, and extend the classic result of H.C. Wang about the maximal dimension of the isometry groups of Finsler manifolds to manifolds of all dimensions. Most proofs in this paper go along the following scheme: using the correspondence $F \mapsto g_F$we reduce the Finslerian problem to a similar problem for the Binet-Legendre metric, which is easier and is already solved in most cases we consider. The solution of the Riemannian problem provides us with the additional information that helps to solve the initial Finslerian problem. Our methods apply even in the absence of the strong convexity assumption usually assumed in Finsler geometry. The smoothness hypothesis can also be replaced by that of partial smoothness, a notion we introduce in the paper. Our results apply therefore to a vast class of Finsler metrics not usually considered in the Finsler literature.

On the Hodge decomposition in R^n

We prove a version of the $L^p$ hodge decomposition for differential forms in Euclidean space and a generalization to the class of Lizorkin currents. We also compute the $L_{qp}-$cohomology of $\mathbb{R}^n$.

The Hölder-Poincaré Duality for $L_{q,p}$-cohomology

We prove the following version of Poincare duality for reduced $L_{q,p}$-cohomology: For any $1<q,p<\infty$, the $L_{q,p}$-cohomology of a Riemannian manifold is in duality with the interior $L_{p',q'}-cohomology for $1/p+1/p'=1$, $1/q+1/q'=1$.

Finsler conformal Lichnerowicz-Obata conjecture

We prove the Finsler analog of the conformal Lichnerowicz-Obata conjecture showing that a complete and essential conformal vector field on a non-Riemannian Finsler manifold is a homothetic vector field of a Minkowski metric.

Harmonic symmetrization of convex sets and of Finsler structures, with applications to Hilbert geometry

David Hilbert discovered in 1895 an important metric that is canonically associated to any convex domain $Ω$ in the Euclidean (or projective) space. This metric is known to be Finslerian, and the usual proof assumes a certain degree of smoothness of the boundary of $Ω$ and refers to a theorem by Busemann and Mayer that produces the norm of a tangent vector from the distance function. In this paper, we develop a new approach for the study of the Hilbert metric where no differentiability is assumed. The approach exhibits the Hilbert metric on a domain as a symmetrization of a natural weak metric, known as the Funk metric. The Funk metric is described as a tautological weak Finsler metric, in which the unit ball at each tangent space is naturally identified with the domain $Ω$ itself. The Hilbert metric is then identified with the reversible tautological weak Finsler structure on $Ω$, and the unit ball at each point is described as the harmonic symmetrization of the unit ball of the Funk metric. Properties of the Hilbert metric then follow from general properties of harmonic symmetrizations of weak Finsler structures.

Weak Finsler Strutures and the Funk Metric

We discuss general notions of metrics and of Finsler structures which we call weak metrics and weak Finsler structures. Any convex domain carries a canonical weak Finsler structure, which we call its tautological weak Finsler structure. We compute distances in the tautological weak Finsler structure of a domain and we show that these are given by the so-called Funk weak metric. We conclude the paper with a discussion of geodesics, of metric balls and of convexity properties of the Funk weak metric.

Distortion of Mappings and $L_{q,p}$-Cohomology

We study some relation between some geometrically defined classes of diffeomorphisms between manifolds and the $L_{q,p}$-cohomology of these manifolds. Some applications to vanishing and non vanishing results in $L_{q,p}$-cohomology are given.

On the naturality of the exterior differential

We give sufficient conditions for the naturallity of the exterior differential under Sobolev mappings. In other words we study the validity of the equation $d f^* α= f^* dα$ for a smooth form $α$ and a Sobolev map $f$.

A Conformal de Rham Complex

We introduce the notion of a conformal de Rham complex of a Riemannian manifold. This is a graded differential Banach algebra and it is invariant under quasiconformal maps, in particular the associated cohomology is a new quasiconformal invariant.

On the Moduli Space of Singular Euclidean Surfaces

The goal of this paper is to develop some aspects of the deformation theory of piecewise flat structures on surfaces and use this theory to construct new geometric structures on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces.

Sobolev Inequalities for Differential Forms and $L_{q,p}$-cohomology

We study the relation between Sobolev inequalities for differential forms on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and the $L_{q,p}$-cohomology of that manifold. The $L_{q,p}$-cohomology of $(M,g)$ is defined to be the quotient of the space of closed differential forms in $L^p(M)$ modulo the exact forms which are exterior differentials of forms in $L^q(M)$.

Weak metrics on Euclidean domains

A weak metric on a set is a function that satisfies the axioms of a metric except the symmetry and the separation axioms. In the present paper we introduced a weak metric, called the Apollonian weak metric, on any subset of a Euclidean space which is either bounded or whose boundary is unbounded. We then relate this weak metric to some familiar metrics such as the Poincare metric, the Klein-Hilbert metric, Funk metric, and the part metric which play an important role in classic and recent work on geometric function theory.
