Pion polarizabilities from a dispersive analysis of $γγ\to ππ$

We present results for the charged and neutral pion polarizabilities, obtained through a dispersive analysis of photon-fusion reactions with two pions in the final state. This analysis is motivated by current and future measurements at COMPASS, JLab (Hall D), and the BESIII measurement of single-virtual photon-fusion reactions in the space-like region, offering insight into generalized pion polarizabilities. To improve predictions within an unsubtracted dispersion formalism with only the pion left-hand cut, one needs to consider the influence of heavier left-hand cuts. We parametrize the latter using an expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, capturing the analytical structure of the left-hand cuts. The coefficients in this expansion are determined from the matching with the Lagrangian-based approach, the Adler zero constraint for $γγ\to π^0π^0$, and a fit to the cross-section data. The extension to the single-virtual case is also discussed.

Nuclear coherent $π^0$ photoproduction with charge-exchange and spin-flip rescattering

In this work, we present an updated model for nuclear $π^0$ photoproduction, which incorporates pion second-order rescattering on intermediate excited nuclear states. Our approach is based on the distorted wave impulse approximation in momentum space. The many-body medium effects are incorporated in the complex effective $Δ$ self-energy, employing the results of the recently developed second-order pion-nucleus scattering potential. The experimental data for ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{40}$Ca are successfully described without the need to fit the model parameters of the photoproduction amplitude as a result of incorporating the second-order part of nuclear photoproduction potential, which involves intermediate nucleon spin-flip and charge exchange.

Constraining the axial-vector X17 interpretation with ${}^{12}$C data

Recent findings of an unexpected, narrow resonance in the $e^+e^-$ decay spectra of excited states of $^8$Be, $^4$He and $^{12}$C by the ATOMKI collaboration have received considerable experimental and theoretical attention, whereby a new, 17-MeV vector-like or axial-vector-like boson termed X17 was conjectured as an explanation of the anomaly. Further analysis of all existing constraints disfavors a vector X17 scenario. For a similar analysis of the axial-vector scenario, a calculation of the reduced matrix element of a spin-dipole operator between the excited nuclear state ${}^{12}$C(17.23) and the carbon ground state is required. In the present work, we compute the aforementioned reduced matrix element under the assumption that the state ${}^{12}$C(17.23) is well represented by the $2s_{1/2}1p^{-1}_{3/2}$ particle-hole shell-model excitation of the ground state, as supported by experimental data. Within such a framework, our results indicate that, like the vector scenario, the axial-vector interpretation of X17 shows strong tensions with the other existing constraints on the nucleon coupling of a conjectured X17.

Improved constraints for axion-like particles from 3-photon events at $e^+e^-$ colliders

Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are one of the most widely discussed extensions of the Standard Model when it comes to the strong CP problem and dark matter candidates. Current experiments are focused on the indirect searches of invisible pseudoscalars in a wide parameter range. In this paper we investigate limits on ALP mass, and its couplings to photons and leptons from 3-photon annihilation at $e^+e^-$ colliders. We provide detailed calculations and apply them to the particular kinematics of the Belle II experiment, covering the ALP mass range from few hundred MeV to around 10 GeV. Our results, which improve upon previous analyses by also including the ALP coupling to electrons, show that such future analyses will allow to significantly extend the ALP search range and impose much more stringent restrictions on their couplings.

Low-mass dark sector searches with deuteron photodisintegration

Recent years have seen much activity in searches for dark-sector messenger particles in the 10-100 MeV mass range, especially in view of a potential new light boson conjectured by the ATOMKI collaboration, X17. Under the assumption that the messenger particle has definite parity and either zero or unit spin, quite stringent bounds already exist on its coupling to electrons and protons. Equally stringent bounds on the neutron coupling do not exist yet, but are nonetheless desirable. We explore how measurements of deuteron photodisintegration with a quasi-free neutron can yield bounds on the neutron coupling, and compute projections for a potential measurement at the lowenergy high-intensity electron scattering experiment MAGIX@MESA. The projected bounds are found to be competitive for an axial-vector or pseudoscalar scenario, but not for a vector or scalar scenario.

Momentum-space second-order pion-nucleus potential including medium effects in the $Δ(1232)$ region

In this work, we develop an updated model for pion-nucleus scattering in the framework of the distorted wave impulse approximation in momentum space. We construct the second-order pion-nucleus potential, which involves analysis of pion-nucleus elastic scattering as a solution of the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. The potential is based on the individual pion-nucleon scattering amplitudes extracted from SAID, and its second-order correction is presented in detail. We estimate optimal energy-independent parameters of the potential by a multi-energy fit of the pion-${}^{12}$C total, reaction, and differential elastic cross sections. We show the predictive power by applying it to pion elastic scattering on ${}^{16}$O, ${}^{28}$Si, and ${}^{40}$Ca.

A dispersive estimate of the $a_0(980)$ contribution to hadronic light-by-light scattering in $(g-2)_μ$

A dispersive implementation of the $a_0(980)$ resonance to $(g-2)_μ$ requires the knowledge of the double-virtual $S$-wave $γ^*γ^*\toπη/ K\bar{K}_{I=1}$ amplitudes. To obtain these amplitudes we used a modified coupled-channel Muskhelischvili-Omnès formalism, with the input from the left-hand cuts and the hadronic Omnès function. The latter were obtained using a data-driven $N/D$ method in which the fits were performed to the different sets of experimental data on two-photon fusion processes with $πη$ and $K\bar{K}$ final states. This yields the preliminary dispersive estimate $a_μ^{HLbL}[a_0(980)]_{resc.}=-0.46(2)\times 10^{-11}$.

X17 discovery potential from $γD \to e^+ e^- p n$ with neutron tagging

We propose a novel direct search experiment for X17 using the reaction $γD \to e^+ e^- pn$. X17 is a hypothetical particle conjectured by the ATOMKI collaboration to explain anomalous signals around 17 MeV in excited ${}^8$Be, ${}^4$He and ${}^{12}$C nuclear decays via internal pair creation. It has been subject to a global experimental and theoretical research program. The proposed direct search in $γD \to e^+ e^- pn$ can verify the existence of X17 through the production on a quasi-free neutron, and determine its quantum numbers separate from ongoing and planned nuclear-decay experiments. This is especially timely in view of the theoretical tension between results from the ${}^{12}$C and ${}^8$Be measurements. Using the plane-wave impulse approximation, we quantify the expected signal and background for pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector X17 scenarios. We optimize the kinematics for the quasi-free neutron region with the upcoming MAGIX experiment at MESA in mind and show that for all three scenarios the X17 signal is clearly visible above the QED background.

Radiative Corrections: From Medium to High Energy Experiments

Radiative corrections are crucial for modern high-precision physics experiments, and are an area of active research in the experimental and theoretical community. Here we provide an overview of the state of the field of radiative corrections with a focus on several topics: lepton-proton scattering, QED corrections in deep-inelastic scattering, and in radiative light-hadron decays. Particular emphasis is placed on the two-photon exchange, believed to be responsible for the proton form-factor discrepancy, and associated Monte-Carlo codes. We encourage the community to continue developing theoretical techniques to treat radiative corrections, and perform experimental tests of these corrections.

Phenomenological model for the $γγ\to π^+π^-π^0$ reaction

We present a phenomenological model for the $γγ\to π^+π^-π^0$ reaction by including the production mechanism of the $a_2(1320)$ resonance, as well as the contributions from the $σ/f_0(500)\, π^0$ and $f_2(1270)\, π^0 $ production channels. Furthermore, the $γγ\toρ^{\pm} π^{\mp}\toπ^{+}π^-π^0$ channel, which is essential for a description in the low-energy region, is investigated carefully by introducing the complete set of gauge invariant and Lorentz-covariant tensors for the $γγ\toρ^\pm π^\mp$ subprocess. The full amplitude is constructed to yield a correct high-energy Regge behavior. Within our model, we achieve a very reasonable description of ARGUS and L3 data of the total cross section, as well as of the $π^\pmπ^0$ and $π^+π^-$ invariant mass distributions. We also predict the invariant mass distributions in the $γγ$ center-of-mass energy range from $0.8$ GeV to $2.0$ GeV, which will be studied by the forthcoming data of the BESIII collaboration.

Analytical dispersive parameterization for elastic scattering of spinless particles

In this paper, we present an improved parameterization of the elastic scattering of spin-0 particles, which is based on a dispersive representation for the inverse scattering amplitude. Besides being based on well known general principles, the requirement that the inverse amplitude should satisfy the dispersion relation significantly constrains its possible forms and have not been incorporated in the existing parameterizations so far. While the right-hand cut of the inverse scattering amplitude is controlled by unitarity, the contribution from the left-hand cut, which comes from the crossing symmetry, is commonly ignored or incorporated improperly. The latter is parameterized using the expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, which accounts for its analytic structure. The correct implementations of the Adler zero and threshold factors for angular momentum $J>0$ are discussed in detail as well. The amplitudes are written in a compact analytic form and provide a useful tool to analyze current and future lattice data in the elastic region improving upon the commonly used Breit-Wigner or K-matrix approaches.

Deeply-virtual Compton process $e^- N \to e^- γπN$ to study nucleon to resonance transitions

We study the deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) process $e^- N \to e^- γπN$ involving the transition between a nucleon and a nucleon resonance in the $πN$ system, within the framework of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). For the four lowest-lying nucleon resonances, $Δ(1232)$, $P_{11}(1440)$, $D_{13}(1520)$, and $S_{11}(1535)$, we express the DVCS amplitude in the Bjorken limit in terms of corresponding nucleon-to-resonance GPDs. Building upon the knowledge of the well studied electromagnetic nucleon-to-resonance transition form factors, which map the quark charge densities in transverse position space, the corresponding GPDs will open the prospect to also access the longitudinal momentum distributions of quarks in the transition. We provide estimates for cross sections and beam-spin asymmetries in the first and second $πN$ resonance regions in the kinematics of forthcoming CLAS12 data from Jefferson Lab.

Analytical dispersive parameterization for S-wave $ππ$ and $πK$ scattering

In this proceeding, we illustrate the applicability of a new parameterization of the S-wave amplitude on the example of the $ππ\to ππ$ and $πK \to πK $ lattice data ($m_π\sim 240$ MeV) from the HadSpec collaboration. The applied parameterization follows from the dispersive representation for the inverse scattering amplitude. The left-hand cut contribution is parametrized by the series in a suitably constructed conformal variable. The crucial input in the analysis is the Adler zero, whose position we extracted from the chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order with the uncertainties propagated from the low-energy constants.

Dispersive analysis of the $ππ$ and $πK$ scattering data

We present a data-driven analysis of the S-wave $ππ\to ππ\,(I=0,2)$ and $πK \to πK\,(I=1/2, 3/2)$ reactions using the partial-wave dispersion relation. The contributions from the left-hand cuts are parametrized using the expansion in a suitably constructed conformal variable, which accounts for its analytical structure. The partial-wave dispersion relation is solved numerically using the $N/D$ method. The fits to the experimental data supplemented with the constraints from chiral perturbation theory at threshold and Adler zero give the results consistent with Roy-like (Roy-Steiner) analyses. For the $ππ$ scattering we present the coupled-channel analysis by including additionally the $K\bar{K}$ channel. By the analytic continuation to the complex plane, we found poles associated with the lightest scalar resonances $σ/f_0(500)$, $f_0(980)$, and $κ/K_0^*(700)$. For all the channels we also performed the fits directly to the Roy-like (Roy-Steiner) solutions in the physical region, in order to minimize the $N/D$ uncertainties in the complex plane and to extract the most constrained Omnès functions.

Dispersive analysis of the $γγ\to D \bar{D}$ data and the confirmation of the $D \bar{D}$ bound state

In this paper, we present a data-driven analysis of the $γγ\to D^+D^-$ and $γγ\to D^0\bar{D}^0$ reactions from threshold up to 4.0 GeV in the $D\bar{D}$ invariant mass. For the $S$-wave contribution, we adopt a partial-wave dispersive representation, which is solved using the $N/D$ ansatz. The left-hand cuts are accounted for using the model-independent conformal expansion. The $D$-wave $χ_{c2}(3930)$ state is described as a Breit-Wigner resonance. The resulting fits are consistent with the data on the invariant mass distribution of the $e^+e^- \to J/ψD\bar{D}$ process. Performing an analytic continuation to the complex $s$-plane, we find no evidence of a pole corresponding to the broad resonance $X(3860)$ reported by the Belle Collaboration. Instead, we find a clear bound state below the $D\bar{D}$ threshold at $\sqrt{s_B} = 3695(4)$ MeV, confirming the previous phenomenological and lattice predictions.

X17 discovery potential in the $γN \rightarrow e^+ e^- N$ process at electron scattering facilities

We propose a direct search for the X17 particle, which was conjectured to explain the ATOMKI $^8$Be and $^4$He anomalies, through the dilepton photoproduction process on a nucleon in the photon energy range below or around the pion production threshold. For the scenarios of either pseudoscalar, vector, or axial-vector quantum numbers of the conjectured X17, we use existing constraints to estimate the X17 signal process. For dilepton resolutions which have been achieved in previous experiments, a signal-to-background ratio of up to an order of magnitude is found for a neutron target, and in particular for the pseudoscalar and vector X17 scenarios.

Soft-photon radiative corrections to the $e^- p \to e^- p l^- l^+$ process

We calculate the leading-order QED radiative corrections to the process $e^- p\rightarrow e^- p l^- l^+ $ in the soft-photon approximation, in two different energy regimes which are of relevance to extract nucleon structure information. In the low-energy region, this process is studied to better constrain the hadronic corrections to precision muonic Hydrogen spectroscopy. In the high-energy region, the beam-spin asymmetry for double virtual Compton scattering allows to directly access the Generalized Parton Distributions. We find that the soft-photon radiative corrections have a large impact on the cross sections and are therefore of paramount importance to extract the nucleon structure information from this process. For the forward-backward asymmetry the radiative corrections are found to affect the asymmetry only around or below the 1\% level, whereas the beam-spin asymmetry is not affected at all in the soft-photon approximation, which makes them gold-plated observables to extract nucleon structure information in both the low- and high-energy regimes.

Expanding Nuclear Physics Horizons with the Gamma Factory

The Gamma Factory (GF) is an ambitious proposal, currently explored within the CERN Physics Beyond Colliders program, for a source of photons with energies up to $\approx 400\,$MeV and photon fluxes (up to $\approx 10^{17}$ photons per second) exceeding those of the currently available gamma sources by orders of magnitude. The high-energy (secondary) photons are produced via resonant scattering of the primary laser photons by highly relativistic partially-stripped ions circulating in the accelerator. The secondary photons are emitted in a narrow cone and the energy of the beam can be monochromatized, eventually down to the $\approx1$ ppm level, via collimation, at the expense of the photon flux. This paper surveys the new opportunities that may be afforded by the GF in nuclear physics and related fields.
