Nuclear structure contribution to the Lamb shift in muonic deuterium

We consider the two-photon exchange contribution to the $2P-2S$ Lamb shift in muonic deuterium in the framework of forward dispersion relations. The dispersion integrals are evaluated using experimental data on elastic deuteron form factors and inelastic electron-deuteron scattering, both in the quasielastic and hadronic range. The subtraction constant that is required to ensure convergence of the dispersion relation for the forward Compton amplitude $T_1(ν,Q^2)$ is related to the deuteron magnetic polarizability $β(Q^2)$. Based on phenomenological information, we obtain for the Lamb shift $ΔE_{2P-2S}=2.01\pm0.74$ meV. The main source of the uncertainty of the dispersion analysis is due to lack of quasielastic data at low energies and forward angles. We show that a targeted measurement of the deuteron electrodesintegration in the kinematics of upcoming experiments A1 and MESA at Mainz can help quenching this uncertainty significantly.

Single meson contributions to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment

We develop the formalism to provide an improved estimate for the hadronic light-by-light correction to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment a_μ, by considering single meson contributions beyond the leading pseudo-scalar mesons. We incorporate available experimental input as well as constraints from light-by-light scattering sum rules to estimate the effects of axial-vector, scalar, and tensor mesons. We give numerical evaluations for the hadronic light-by-light contribution of these states to a_μ. The presented formalism allows to further improve on these estimates, once new data for such meson states will become available.

Generalized Parton Distributions in the valence region from Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

This work reviews the recent developments in the field of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) and Deeply virtual Compton scattering in the valence region, which aim at extracting the quark structure of the nucleon. We discuss the constraints which the present generation of measurements provide on GPDs, and examine several state-of-the-art parametrizations of GPDs. Future directions in this active field are discussed.

Pion-mass dispersion relation in the baryon sector

By looking at the complex plane of the pion-mass squared we establish a dispersion relation which the static quantities, such as baryon masses, magnetic moments, polarizabilities, should obey. This dispersion relation yields insight into the differences between the heavy-baryon and relativistic calculations in the baryon sector of chiral perturbation theory.

Light-by-light scattering sum rules constraining meson transition form factors

Relating the forward light-by-light scattering to energy weighted integrals of the γ* γ-fusion cross sections, with one real photon (γ) and one virtual photon (γ*), we find two new exact super-convergence relations. They complement the known super-convergence relation based on the extension of the GDH sum rule to the light-light system. We also find a set of sum rules for the low-energy photon-photon interaction. All of the new relations are verified here exactly at leading order in scalar and spinor QED. The super-convergence relations, applied to the γ* γ-production of mesons, lead to intricate relations between the γγ-decay widths or the γ* γ-transition form factors for (pseudo-) scalar, axial-vector and tensor mesons. We discuss the phenomenological implications of these results for mesons in both the light-quark sector and the charm-quark sector.

Constraining off-shell effects using low-energy Compton scattering

Off-shell effects in proton electromagnetic vertices can be constrained from their effects on known processes. In particular, parameters in models for the off-shell effects can be determined by fitting to the proton electric and magnetic polarizabilities measured in low-energy Compton scattering. There has been recent speculation that off-shell effects contribute enough energy to the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift to explain the discrepancy between muonic and electronic measurements of the proton radius. We find that the constraints discussed here make the off-shell effects about two orders of magnitude smaller than needed for this purpose.

Unified framework for generalized and transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions within a 3Q light-cone picture of the nucleon

We present a systematic study of generalized transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs). By taking specific limits or projections, these GTMDs yield various transverse-momentum dependent and generalized parton distributions, thus providing a unified framework to simultaneously model different observables. We present such simultaneous modeling by considering a light-cone wave function overlap representation of the GTMDs. We construct the different quark-quark correlation functions from the 3-quark Fock components within both the light-front constituent quark model as well as within the chiral quark-soliton model. We provide a comparison with available data and make predictions for different observables.

Soft spectator scattering in the nucleon form factors at large $Q^2$ within the SCET approach

The proton form factors at large momentum transfer are dominated by two contributions which are associated with the hard and soft rescattering respectively. Motivated by a very active experimental form factor program at intermediate values of momentum transfers, $Q^{2}\sim 5-15 \text{GeV}^{2}$, where an understanding in terms of only a hard rescattering mechanism cannot yet be expected, we investigate in this work the soft rescattering contribution using soft collinear effective theory (SCET). Within such description, the form factor is characterized, besides the hard scale $Q^2$, by a semi-hard scale $Q Λ$, which arises due to presence of soft spectators, with virtuality $Λ^2$ ($Λ\sim 0.5$ GeV), such that $Q^{2}\gg QΛ\gg Λ^{2}$. We show that in this case a two-step factorization can be successfully carried out using the SCET approach. In a first step (SCET$_I$), we perform the leading order matching of the QCD electromagnetic current onto the relevant SCET$_I$ operators and perform a resummation of large logarithms using renormalization group equations. We then discuss the further matching onto a SCET$_{II}$ framework, and propose the complete factorization formula for the Dirac form factor, accounting for both hard and soft contributions. We also present a qualitative discussion of the phenomenological consequences of this new framework.

Higher order proton structure corrections to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen

The recent conundrum with the proton charge radius inspires reconsideration of the corrections that enter into determinations of the proton size. We study the two-photon proton-structure corrections, with special consideration of the non-pole subtraction term in the dispersion relation, and using fits to modern data to evaluate the energy contributions. We find that individual contributions change more than the total, and present results with error estimates.

Study of Two-Photon Corrections in the $p\bar{p} --> e+e-$ Process: Hard Rescattering Mechanism

We investigate the two-photon corrections to the process $p\bar{p} \to e^+e^-$ at large momentum transfer, aimed to access the time-like nucleon form factors. We estimate the two-photon corrections using a hard rescattering mechanism, which has already been used to calculate the corresponding corrections to elastic electron-proton scattering. Using different nucleon distribution amplitudes, we find that the two-photon corrections to the $p\bar{p} \to e^+e^-$ cross sections in the momentum transfer range 5 - 30 GeV$^2$ is below the 1 % level.

Light-front transverse charge densities

We discuss the recent interpretation of quark-distribution functions in the plane transverse to the light-cone direction. Such a mapping is model independent and allows one to build up multidimensional pictures of the hadron and to develop a semi-classical interpretation of the quark dynamics. We comment briefly the results obtained from the form factors of the nucleon. We show that a generalization to a target with arbitrary spin leads to a set of preferred values for the electromagnetic coupling characterizing structureless particles. Finally, we present the Wigner distribution for an unpolarized quark in an unpolarized proton and we propose an interpretation of the observed distortion as due to the orbital angular momentum of the quark.

Sum rules for light-by-light scattering

We derive a set of sum rules for the light-by-light scattering and fusion: $γγ\to all$, and verify them in lowest order QED calculations. A prominent implication of these sum rules is the superconvergence of the helicity-difference total cross-section for photon fusion, which in the hadron sector reveals an intricate cancellation between the pseudoscalar and tensor mesons. An experimental verification of superconvergence of the polarized photon fusion into hadrons is called for, but will only be possible at $e^+ e^-$ and $γγ$ colliders with both beams polarized. We also show how the sum rules can be used to measure various contributions to the low-energy light-by-light scattering.

Long Range Structure of the Nucleon

The long range structure of the nucleon is discussed starting from the old model of a quark bag with a pion cloud (``cloudy bag'') carrying on to the more recent ideas of the parton model of the nucleon. On the basis of the most recent measurements of the form factors at MAMI, JLab and MIT quantitative results for nucleon charge densities are presented within both non-relativistic and relativistic frameworks.

Electromagnetic moments of quasi-stable particle

We deal with the problem of assigning electromagnetic moments to a quasi-stable particle (i.e., a particle with mass located at particle's decay threshold). In this case, an application of a small external electromagnetic field changes the energy in a non-analytic way, which makes it difficult to assign definitive moments. On the example of a spin-1/2 field with mass $M_{*}$ interacting with two fields of masses $M$ and $m$, we show how a conventionally defined magnetic dipole moment diverges at $M_{*}=M+m$. We then show that the conventional definition makes sense only when the values of the applied magnetic field $B$ satisfy $|eB|/2M_{*}\ll|M_{*}-M-m|$. We discuss implications of these results to existing studies in electroweak theory, chiral effective-field theory, and lattice QCD.

A dispersion relation for the pion-mass dependence of hadron properties

We present a dispersion relation in the pion-mass squared, which static quantities (nucleon mass, magnetic moment, etc.) obey under the assumption of analyticity in the entire complex $m_π^2$ plane modulo a cut at negative $m_π^2$ associated with pion production. The relation is verified here in a number of examples of nucleon and $Δ$-isobar properties computed in chiral perturbation theory up to order $p^3$. We outline a method to obtain relations for other mass-dependencies, and illustrate it on a two-loop example.

Two-photon exchange in elastic electron-proton scattering : QCD factorization approach

We estimate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering at large momentum transfer $Q^2$. It is shown that the leading two-photon exchange amplitude behaves as $1/Q^4$ relative to the one-photon amplitude, and can be expressed in a model independent way in terms of the leading twist nucleon distribution amplitudes. Using several models for the nucleon distribution amplitudes, we provide estimates for existing data and for ongoing experiments.
