Apertif - the focal-plane array system for the WSRT

We describe a focal plane array (FPA) system, called Apertif, that is being developed for the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). The aim of Apertif is to increase the instantaneous field of view of the WSRT by a factor of 37 and its observing bandwidth to 300 MHz with high spectral resolution. This system will turn the WSRT into an effective survey telescope with scientific applications such as deep imaging surveys of the northern sky of HI and OH emission, of the polarised continuum and efficient searches for pulsars and transients. Such surveys will detect the HI in more than 100,000 galaxies out to z = 0.4, will allow to determine the detailed structure of the magnetic field of the Galaxy, and will discover more than 1,000 pulsars. We present experimental results obtained with a prototype FPA installed in one of the WSRT dishes. These results demonstrate that FPAs do have the performance that is required to make all these surveys possible.

Growth and Destruction of Disks: Combined HI and HII View

How large disk galaxies have evolved in, and out of, the blue cloud of actively star-forming galaxies as a function of environment and time is an outstanding question. Some of the largest disks become systems like M31, M33 and the Milky Way today. In denser environments, it appears they transform onto the red sequence. Tracking disk systems since z<0.5 as a function HI mass, dynamical mass, and environment should be possible in the coming decade. HI and optical data combined can sample outer and inner disk dynamics to connect halo properties with regions of most intense star-formation, and the gas reservoir to the consumption rate. We describe existing and future IFUs on 4-10m telescopes that complement upcoming HI surveys for studying disks at z<0.5. Multiple units, deployable over large fields-of-view, and with logarithmic sampling will yield kinematic and star-formation maps and properties of the stellar populations, resolving the core but retaining sensitivity to disk outskirts.

HI imaging of Galaxy Clusters at z=0.2; a Pilot Survey of Abell 963 and Abell 2192

A pilot study with the powerful new backend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) of two galaxy clusters at z=0.2 has revealed neutral hydrogen emission from 39 galaxies. The volume probed for each cluster is 1.7x10^4 Mpc^3, with spatial and velocity resolutions of 54x86 kpc^2 and 19.7 km/s, covering both clusters and the large scale structure in which they are embedded. The spatial distribution of the HI detected galaxies is very different for the two clusters. In Abell 963, most of the gas-rich galaxies are located to the northeast, at 1-3 Mpc from the cluster center in projection. Their velocities are slightly redshifted with respect to the cluster mean. This could be a gas-rich group falling in from the front. Abell 2192 is less massive and more diffuse, with the gas rich galaxies more uniformly spread over a large region around the cluster. The HI masses of the detected galaxies range from 5x10^9 to 4x10^10 Msun. Some HI-rich galaxies are spatially resolved and rudimentary rotation curves are derived, showing the prospect for Tully-Fisher studies of different galaxy populations in these environments. Only one galaxy is detected within a 1 Mpc radius from the center of the Butcher-Oemler cluster Abell 963, and none of the blue B-O galaxies which are all located within the central Mpc. The HI detected galaxies outside the central Mpc are of similar colour and magnitude as the non-detected B-O galaxies, indicating that the blue B-O galaxies are gas-poor compared to their counterparts in the field.

The Disk Mass project; science case for a new PMAS IFU module

We present our Disk Mass project as the main science case for building a new fiber IFU-module for the PMAS spectrograph, currently mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the 3.5m telescope on Calar Alto. Compared to traditional long-slit observations, the large light collecting power of 2-dimensional Integral Field Units dramatically improves the prospects for performing spectroscopy on extended low surface brightness objects with high spectral resolution. This enables us to measure stellar velocity dispersions in the outer disk of normal spiral galaxies. We describe some results from a PMAS pilot study using the existing lenslet array, and provide a basic description of the new fiber IFU-module for PMAS.

WIYN Integral-Field Kinematics of Disk Galaxies

We have completed a new fiber array, SparsePak, optimized for low-surface-brightness studies of extended sources on the WIYN telescope. We are now using this array as a measuring engine of velocity and velocity-dispersion fields of stars and ionized gas in disk galaxies from high to low surface-brightness. Here we present commissioning data on the velocity ellipsoids, surface densities and mass-to-light ratios in two blue, high surface-brightness, yet small disks. If our preliminary results survive further observation and more sophisticated analysis, then NGC 3949 has sigma_z/sigma_R >> 1, implying strong vertical heating, while NGC 3982's disk is substantially sub-maximal. These galaxies are strikingly unlike the Milky Way, and yet would be seen more easily at high redshift.

Measuring Galaxy Disk Mass with the SparsePak Integral Field Unit on WIYN

We present first results from commissioning data of the SparsePak Integral Field Unit on the WIYN telescope. SparsePak is a bundle of 82 fibers, each 5 arcsec in diameter and arranged in a sparsely filled, 76x77 arcsec hexagonal grid. NGC 3982, a nearly face-on, blue and very high surface brightness galaxy, was mapped in three spectral regions; around 5130A (MgI), 6680A (H-alpha) and 8660A (CaII-triplet) with FWHM spectral resolutions of 24, 16 and 37 km/s respectively. At 3.5 disk scale lengths, the spectra of 18 fibers were averaged after deprojection of the rotation curve. Stellar velocity dispersions were determined in the CaII region by convolving the spectrum of a K0.5-III template star with a Gaussian of varying FWHM and finding the best match to the azimuthally avaraged galaxy spectra. A radial mass surface density profile has been derived for a variety of scale heights assuming an isothermal vertical density profile. At two disk scale lengths, the mass surface density of N3982 is ~3 times higher than that of the Milky Way in the solar neighborhood. Surprisingly, the stellar rotation curve of this compact and high surface brightness galaxy is substantially sub-maximum.

Hydrogen 21-Centimeter Emission from a Galaxy at Cosmological Distance

We have detected the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) emission line at a cosmologically significant distance (z=0.18) in the rich galaxy cluster Abell 2218 with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The HI emission originates in a spiral galaxy 2.0 megaparsecs from the cluster core. No other significant detections have been made in the cluster, suggesting that the mechanisms that remove neutral gas from cluster galaxies are efficient. We infer that fewer than three gas-rich galaxies were accreted by Abell 2218 over the past 10^9 years. This low accretion rate is qualitatively consistent with low-density cosmological models in which clusters are largely assembled at z>1.

Reconciling Damped Ly-alpha Statistics and 21cm Studies at z=0

Blind 21cm surveys in the local universe have shown that the local HI mass density, Omega_HI, is dominated by luminous, high surface brightness, spiral galaxies. On the other hand, surveys for host galaxies of damped Ly-alpha systems have not always been successful in finding bright spiral galaxies. From an analysis of 21cm aperture synthesis maps of nearby galaxies we show that this apparent contradiction can be resolved by realizing that the HI mass density is dominated by L* galaxies, but the HI cross section near the DLA threshold is more evenly distributed over galaxies with a large range in luminosity, gas mass, and surface brightness. The distributions of column densities and impact parameters of optically identified and non-identified DLA host galaxies in the literature and the HI maps are qualitatively in agreement. Due to poor number statistics of low redshift DLA systems, there is no firm indication that the redshift number count of low redshift DLA systems is inconsistent with that calculated from the nearby galaxy population.

The HI mass function in Ursa Major

A deep blind HI survey of the nearby spiral rich Ursa Major cluster has been performed with the VLA in parallel with a wide-field R-band imaging campaign of most VLA fields with the CFHT. The goal is to measure the slope of the HI mass function down to HI masses of 10^7 Msun as well as the slope of the faint-end of the luminosity function down to M(R)=-10. The VLA survey sampled 16% of the Ursa Major cluster volume. Both the HIMF and the LF in Ursa Major are nearly flat at their faint-ends. No free- floating HI clouds were detected.

The HI Column Density Distribution Function at z=0: the Connection to Damped Ly alpha Statistics

We present a measurement of the HI column density distribution function, f(N), at the present epoch for column densities log N > 20 cm^-2. These high column densities compare to those measured in damped Ly alpha lines seen in absorption against background quasars. Although observationally rare, it appears that the bulk of the neutral gas in the Universe is associated with these damped Ly alpha systems. In order to obtain a good anchor point at z=0 we determine f(N) in the local Universe by using 21cm synthesis observations of a complete sample of spiral galaxies. We show that f(N) for damped Ly alpha systems has changed significantly from high z to the present and that change is greatest for the highest column densities. The measurements indicate that low surface brightness galaxies make a minor contribution to the cross section for HI, especially for log N > 21^-2.

A dichotomy between HSB and LSB galaxies

A complete sample of spiral galaxies in the Ursa Major cluster is imaged at various optical wavelengths and in the Near-Infrared K'-band. HI rotation curves were obtained for all gas rich systems. The Near-Infrared surface brightness distribution of disk galaxies turns out to be bimodal; galaxies avoid a domain around a face-on disk central surface brightness of 18.5 mag/arcsec^2. This bimodality is particularly striking when only the more isolated, non-interacting systems are considered. The Luminosity Function of the HSB family of galaxies is truncated well above the completion limit while the Luminosity Function of the LSB family is still sharply rising at our limiting magnitude. Near-Infrared mass-to-light ratios suggest that HSB galaxies are close to a kinematic maximum-disk situation while LSB galaxies are dark matter dominated at all radii. Assuming equal Near-Infrared mass-to-light ratios for both HSB and LSB systems, we find that the gap in the surface brightness distribution corresponds to a situation in which the baryonic mass is marginally self-gravitating. We finally conclude that the luminosity-line width relation is a fundamental correlation between the amount and distribution of dark matter mass and the total luminosity, regardless of how the luminous mass is distributed within the dark mater halo.
