Inhomogeneous phases in the Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions at finite number of flavors

We explore the thermodynamics of the 1+1-dimensional Gross-Neveu (GN) model at finite number of fermion flavors $N_f$, finite temperature and finite chemical potential using lattice field theory. In the limit $N_f \rightarrow \infty$ the model has been solved analytically in the continuum. In this limit three phases exist: a massive phase, in which a homogeneous chiral condensate breaks chiral symmetry spontaneously, a massless symmetric phase with vanishing condensate and most interestingly an inhomogeneous phase with a condensate, which oscillates in the spatial direction. In the present work we use chiral lattice fermions (naive fermions and SLAC fermions) to simulate the GN model with 2, 8 and 16 flavors. The results obtained with both discretizations are in agreement. Similarly as for $N_f \rightarrow \infty$ we find three distinct regimes in the phase diagram, characterized by a qualitatively different behavior of the two-point function of the condensate field. For $N_f = 8$ we map out the phase diagram in detail and obtain an inhomogeneous region smaller as in the limit $N_f \rightarrow \infty$, where quantum fluctuations are suppressed. We also comment on the existence or absence of Goldstone bosons related to the breaking of translation invariance in 1+1 dimensions.

Lattice investigation of an inhomogeneous phase of the 2+1-dimensional Gross-Neveu model in the limit of infinitely many flavors

We investigate the phase structure of the 2+1-dimensional Gross-Neveu model in the large-Nf limit, where Nf denotes the number of fermion flavors. We discuss two different fermion representations and their implication on the interpretation of a discrete symmetry of the action. We present numerical results, which indicate the existence of an inhomogeneous phase similar as in the 1+1-dimensional Gross-Neveu model.

Baryons in the Gross-Neveu model in 1+1 dimensions at finite number of flavors

In a recent work we studied the phase structure of the Gross-Neveu (GN) model in $1+1$ dimensions at finite number of fermion flavors $N_\mathrm{f} = 2, 8, 16$, finite temperature and finite chemical potential using lattice field theory. Most importantly, we found an inhomogeneous phase at low temperature and large chemical potential, quite similar to the analytically solvable $N_\mathrm{f} \rightarrow \infty$ limit. In the present work we continue our lattice field theory investigation of the finite-$N_\mathrm{f}$ GN model by studying the formation of baryons, their spatial distribution and their relation to the chiral condensate. As a preparatory step we also discuss a linear coupling of lattice fermions to the chemical potential.

Investigation of Doubly Heavy Tetraquark Systems using Lattice QCD

We search for possibly existent bound states in the heavy-light tetraquark channels with quark content $ \bar{b}\bar{b}ud $, $ \bar{b}\bar{b}us $ and $ \bar{b}\bar{c}ud $ using lattice QCD. We carry out calculations on several gauge link ensembles with $ N_f=2+1 $ flavours of domain-wall fermions and consider a basis of local and non-local interpolators. Besides extracting the energy spectrum from the correlation matrices, we also perform a Lüscher analysis to extrapolate our results to infinite volume.

Hybrid static potentials in SU(2) lattice gauge theory at short quark-antiquark separations

We compute hybrid static potentials in SU(2) lattice gauge theory using a multilevel algorithm and three different small lattice spacings. The resulting static potentials, which are valid for quark-antiquark separations as small as 0.05 fm, are important e.g. when computing masses of heavy hybrid mesons in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. We also discuss and exclude possible systematic errors from topological freezing, the finite lattice volume and glueball decays.

Tetraquark interpolating fields in a lattice QCD investigation of the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson

We investigate the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson using lattice QCD and considering correlation functions of several $\bar{c} s$ two-quark and $\bar{c} s (\bar{u} u + \bar{d} d)$ four-quark interpolating fields. These interpolating fields generate different structures in color, spin and position space including quark-antiquark pairs, tetraquarks and two-meson scattering states. For our computation we use an ensemble simulated with pion mass $m_π\approx 0.296 \, \textrm{GeV}$ and spatial volume of extent $2.90 \, \textrm{fm}$. We find in addition to the expected spectrum of two-meson scattering states another state around $60 \, \textrm{MeV}$ below the $D K$ threshold, which we interpret as the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson. This state couples predominantly to a quark-antiquark interpolating field and only weakly to a $D K$ two-meson interpolating field. The coupling to the tetraquark interpolating fields is essentially zero, rendering a tetraquark interpretation of the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ meson rather unlikely. Moreover, we perform a scattering analysis using Lüscher's method and the effective range approximation to determine the $D_{s0}^\ast(2317)$ mass for infinite spatial volume. We find this mass $51 \, \textrm{MeV}$ below the $D K$ threshold, rather close to both our finite volume result and the experimentally observed value.

Bottomonium resonances with $I = 0$ from lattice QCD correlation functions with static and light quarks

We discuss, how to study $I = 0$ quarkonium resonances decaying into pairs of heavy-light mesons using static potentials from lattice QCD. These static potentials can be obtained from a set of correlation functions containing both static and light quarks. As a proof of concept we focus on bottomonium with relative orbital angular momentum $L = 0$ of the $\bar{b} b$ pair corresponding to $J^{P C} = 0^{- +}$ and $J^{P C} = 1^{- -}$. We use static potentials from an existing lattice QCD string breaking study and compute phase shifts and $\mbox{T}$ matrix poles for the lightest heavy-light meson-meson decay channel. We discuss our results in the context of corresponding experimental results, in particular for $Υ(10860)$ and $Υ(11020)$.

Static force from the lattice

We present a novel approach to compute the force between a static quark and a static antiquark from lattice gauge theory directly, rather than extracting it from the static energy. We explore this approach for SU(3) pure gauge theory using the multilevel algorithm and smeared operators.

Lattice investigation of the phase diagram of the 1+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model at finite number of fermion flavors

We explore the phase structure of the 1+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model at finite number of fermion flavors using lattice field theory. Besides a chirally symmetric phase and a homogeneously broken phase we find evidence for the existence of an inhomogeneous phase, where the condensate is a spatially oscillating function. Our numerical results include a crude $μ$-$T$ phase diagram.

Lattice QCD investigation of a doubly-bottom $\bar{b} \bar{b} u d$ tetraquark with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$

We use lattice QCD to investigate the spectrum of the $\bar{b} \bar{b} u d$ four-quark system with quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$. We use five different gauge-link ensembles with $2+1$ flavors of domain-wall fermions, including one at the physical pion mass, and treat the heavy $\bar{b}$ quark within the framework of lattice nonrelativistic QCD. Our work improves upon previous similar computations by considering in addition to local four-quark interpolators also nonlocal two-meson interpolators and by performing a Lüscher analysis to extrapolate our results to infinite volume. We obtain a binding energy of $(-128 \pm 24 \pm 10) \, \textrm{MeV}$, corresponding to the mass $(10476 \pm 24 \pm 10) \, \textrm{MeV}$, which confirms the existence of a $\bar{b} \bar{b} u d$ tetraquark that is stable with respect to the strong and electromagnetic interactions.

Hybrid static potential flux tubes from SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theory

We compute chromoelectric and chromomagnetic flux densities for hybrid static potentials in SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theory. In addition to the ordinary static potential with quantum numbers $Λ_η^ε= Σ_g^+$, we present numerical results for seven hybrid static potentials corresponding to $Λ_η^{(ε)} = Σ_u^+, Σ_g^-, Σ_u^-, Π_g, Π_u, Δ_g, Δ_u$, where the flux densities of five of them are studied for the first time in this work. We observe hybrid static potential flux tubes, which are significantly different from that of the ordinary static potential. They are reminiscent of vibrating strings, with localized peaks in the flux densities that can be interpreted as valence gluons.

Precision computation of hybrid static potentials in SU(3) lattice gauge theory

We perform a precision computation of hybrid static potentials with quantum numbers $Λ_η^ε= Σ_g^-,Σ_u^+,Σ_u^-,Π_g,Π_u,Δ_g,Δ_u$ using SU(3) lattice gauge theory. The resulting potentials are used to estimate masses of heavy $\bar{c} c$ and $\bar{b} b$ hybrid mesons in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Part of the lattice gauge theory computation, which we discuss in detail, is an extensive optimization of hybrid static potential creation operators. The resulting optimized operators are expected to be essential for future projects concerning the computation of 3-point functions as e.g. needed to study spin corrections, decays or the gluon distribution of heavy hybrid mesons.

Determination of $Λ_{\overline{\textrm{MS}}}^{(n_f=2)}$ and analytic parameterization of the static quark-antiquark potential

While lattice QCD allows for reliable results at small momentum transfers (large quark separations), perturbative QCD is restricted to large momentum transfers (small quark separations). The latter is determined up to a reference momentum scale $Λ$, which is to be provided from outside, e.g. from experiment or lattice QCD simulations. In this article, we extract $Λ_{\overline{\textrm{MS}}}$ for QCD with $n_f=2$ dynamical quark flavors by matching the perturbative static quark-antiquark potential in momentum space to lattice results in the intermediate momentum regime, where both approaches are expected to be applicable. In a second step, we combine the lattice and the perturbative results to provide a complete analytic parameterization of the static quark-antiquark potential in position space up to the string breaking scale. As an exemplary phenomenological application of our all-distances potential we compute the bottomonium spectrum in the static limit.

$\bar{b}\bar{b}ud$ tetraquark resonances in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation using lattice QCD potentials

We study tetraquark resonances using lattice QCD potentials for a pair of static antiquarks $\bar{b}\bar{b}$ in the presence of two light quarks $ud$. The system is treated in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and we use the emergent wave method. We focus on the isospin $I=0$ channel, but consider different orbital angular momenta $l$ of the heavy antiquarks $\bar{b}\bar{b}$. We extract the phase shifts and search for $\mbox{S}$ and $\mbox{T}$ matrix poles on the second Riemann sheet. For orbital angular momentum $l=1$ we find a tetraquark resonance with quantum numbers $I(J^P)=0(1^-)$, resonance mass $m=10576^{+4}_{-4} \, \textrm{MeV}$ and decay width $Γ= 112^{+90}_{-103} \textrm{MeV}$, which can decay into two $B$ mesons.

Structure of hybrid static potential flux tubes in lattice Yang-Mills theory

We report about an ongoing lattice field theory project concerned with the investigation of heavy hybrid mesons. In particular we discuss our computation of the structure of hybrid static potential flux tubes in SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory, which is based on the squares of the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic field strength components. Our flux tube results for hybrid static potential quantum numbers $Σ_g^-$, $Σ_u^+$, $Σ_u^-$, $Π_g$, $Π_u$, $Δ_g$, $Δ_u$ are significantly different compared to the flux tube of the ordinary static potential.

Computation of hybrid static potentials from optimized trial states in SU(3) lattice gauge theory

We compute hybrid static potentials in SU(3) lattice gauge theory using a method to automatically generate a large set of suitable creation operators from elementary building blocks. This method allows to find sets of creation operators, which generate trial states with large ground state overlaps for all investigated angular momentum and parity sectors. We present numerical results for hybrid static potentials with quantum numbers $Σ^-_g, Σ^+_u, Σ^-_u, Π_g, Π_u, Δ_g, Δ_u$.

Structure of hybrid static potential flux tubes in SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory

We study the structure of the hybrid static potential flux tube in the $Π_u$ sector in SU(2) lattice Yang-Mills theory. To this end, we compute the squares of the chromoelectric and chromomagnetic field strengths in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair. We show clear evidence that the gluon distribution is significantly different compared to that of the ordinary static potential with quantum numbers $Σ_g^+$.
