A (reactive) lattice-gas approach to economic cycles

A microscopic approach to macroeconomic features is intended. A model for macroeconomic behavior under heterogeneous spatial economic conditions is reviewed. A birth-death lattice gas model taking into account the influence of an economic environment on the fitness and concentration evolution of economic entities is numerically and analytically examined. The reaction-diffusion model can be also mapped onto a high order logistic map. The role of the selection pressure along various dynamics with entity diffusion on a square symmetry lattice has been studied by Monte-Carlo simulation. The model leads to a sort of phase transition for the fitness gap as a function of the selection pressure and to cycles. The control parameter is a (scalar) ''business plan''. The business plan(s) allows for spin-offs or merging and enterprise survival evolution law(s), whence bifurcations, cycles and chaotic behavior.

Statistical Physics in Meteorology

Various aspects of modern statistical physics and meteorology can be tied together. The historical importance of the University of Wroclaw in the field of meteorology is first pointed out. Next, some basic difference about time and space scales between meteorology and climatology is outlined. The nature and role of clouds both from a geometric and thermal point of view are recalled. Recent studies of scaling laws for atmospheric variables are mentioned, like studies on cirrus ice content, brightness temperature, liquid water path fluctuations, cloud base height fluctuations, .... Technical time series analysis approaches based on modern statistical physics considerations are outlined.

Model of macroeconomic evolution in stable regionally dependent economic fields

We develop a model for the evolution of economic entities within a geographical type of framework. On a square symmetry lattice made of three (economic) regions, firms, described by a scalar fitness, are allowed to move, adapt, merge or create spin-offs under predetermined rules, in a space and time dependent economic environment. We only consider here one timely variation of the ''external economic field condition''. For the firm fitness evolution we take into account a constraint such that the disappearance of a firm modifies the fitness of nearest neighboring ones, as in Bak-Sneppen population fitness evolution model. The concentration of firms, the averaged fitness, the regional distribution of firms, and fitness for different time moments, the number of collapsed, merged and new firms as a function of time have been recorded and are discussed. Also the asymptotic values of the number of firms present in the three regions together with their average fitness, as well as the number of respective births and collapses in the three regions are examined. It appears that a sort of $critical$ selection pressure exists. A power law dependence, signature of self-critical organization is seen in the birth and collapse asymptotic values for a high selection pressure only. A lack of self-organization is also seen at region borders.

Evolution of economic entities under heterogeneous political/environmental conditions within a Bak-Sneppen-like dynamics

A model for economic behavior, under heterogeneous spatial economic conditions is developed. The role of selection pressure in a Bak-Sneppen-like dynamics with entity diffusion on a lattice is studied by Monte-Carlo simulation taking into account business rule(s), like enterprise - enterprise short range location "interaction"(s), business plan(s) through spin-offs or merging and enterprise survival evolution law(s). It is numerically found that the model leads to a sort of phase transition for the fitness gap as a function of the selection pressure.

Dynamical model and nonextensive statistical mechanics of a market index on large time windows

The shape and tails of partial distribution functions (PDF) for a financial signal, i.e. the S&P500 and the turbulent nature of the markets are linked through a model encompassing Tsallis nonextensive statistics and leading to evolution equations of the Langevin and Fokker-Planck type. A model originally proposed to describe the intermittent behavior of turbulent flows describes the behavior of normalized log-returns for such a financial market index, for small and large time windows, both for small and large log-returns. These turbulent market volatility (of normalized log-returns) distributions can be sufficiently well fitted with a $χ^2$-distribution. The transition between the small time scale model of nonextensive, intermittent process and the large scale Gaussian extensive homogeneous fluctuation picture is found to be at $ca.$ a 200 day time lag. The intermittency exponent ($κ$) in the framework of the Kolmogorov log-normal model is found to be related to the scaling exponent of the PDF moments, -thereby giving weight to the model. The large value of $κ$ points to a large number of cascades in the turbulent process. The first Kramers-Moyal coefficient in the Fokker-Planck equation is almost equal to zero, indicating ''no restoring force''. A comparison is made between normalized log-returns and mere price increments.

Two band gap field-dependent thermal conductivity of $MgB_2$

The thermal conductivity $κ(H,T)$ of the new superconductor $MgB_2$ was studied as a function of the temperature and a magnetic field. No anomaly in the thermal conductivity $κ(H,T)$ is observed around the superconducting transition in absence or presence of magnetic fields up to 14 Tesla; upon that field the superconductivity of $MgB_2$ persisted. The thermal conductivity in zero-field shows a $T$-linear increase up to 50K. The thermal conductivity is found to increase with increasing field at high fields. We interpret the findings as if there are two subsystems of quasiparticles with different field-dependent characters in a two ($L$ and $S$)-band superconductor reacting differently with the vortex structure. The unusual enhancement of $κ(H ,T)$ at low temperature but higher than a ($H_{c2S}\simeq 3T$) critical field is interpreted as a result of the overlap of the low energy states outside the vortex cores in the $S$-band.

Simple Model for the Dynamics of Correlations in the Evolution of Economic Entities Under Varying Economic Conditions

From some observations on economic behaviors, in particular changing economic conditions with time and space, we develop a very simple model for the evolution of economic entities within a geographical type of framework. We raise a few questions and attempt to investigate whether some of them can be tackled by our model. Several cases of interest are reported. It is found that the model even in its simple forms can lead to a large variety of situations, including: delocalization and cycles, but also pre-chaotic behavior.

Correlation studies of open and closed states fluctuations in an ion channel: Analysis of ion current through a large conductance locust potassium channel

Ion current fluctuations occurring within open and closed states of large conductance locust potassium channel (BK channel) were investigated for the existence of correlation. Both time series, extracted from the ion current signal, were studied by the autocorrelation function (AFA) and the detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) methods. The persistent character of the short- and middle-range correlations of time series is shown by the slow decay of the autocorrelation function. The DFA exponent $α$ is significantly larger than 0.5. The existence of strongly-persistent long-range correlations was detected only for closed-states fluctuations, with $α=0.98\pm0.02$. The long-range correlation of the BK channel action is therefore determined by the character of closed states. The main outcome of this study is that the memory effect is present not only between successive conducting states of the channel but also independently within the open and closed states themselves. As the ion current fluctuations give information about the dynamics of the channel protein, our results point to the correlated character of the protein movement regardless whether the channel is in its open or closed state.

Phase dependent differential thermopower of SND junctions: Pair-breaking effects and Gaussian fluctuations

We start with revisiting our previous results on thermoelectric response of SNS configuration in a C-shaped Bi(x)Pb(1-x)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(y) sample in order to include strong fluctuation effects. Then, by appropriate generalization of the Ginzburg-Landau theory based on admixture of s-wave and d-wave superconductors, we consider a differential thermoelectric power (TEP) of SND junction. In addition to its strong dependence on the relative phase θ=ϕ_s-ϕ_d between the two superconductors, two major effects are shown to influence the behavior of the predicted TEP. One, based on the chemical imbalance at SD interface, results in a pronounced maximum of the TEP peak near θ=π/2 (where the so-called s+id mixed pairing state is formed) for two identical superconductors (with T_d=T_s\equiv T_c). Another effect, which should manifest itself at SD interface comprising an s-wave low-T_c superconductor and a d-wave high-T_c superconductor (with T_d\neq T_s), predicts S_p\propto T_d-T_s for the TEP peak value. The experimental conditions under which the predicted behavior of the induced differential TEP can be measured are discussed.
