Central operators on complex Banach lattices

We show that the centre of a Dedekind complete complex Banach lattice is a commutative $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebra in the order unit norm. This implies that the order unit norm and the operator norm coincide. As an application of the latter, a Fuglede--Putnam--Rosenblum-type theorem is established. Under an extra condition on the underlying real Banach lattice, which is satisfied when it is order continuous, a spectral theorem is given for the centre of the complex Banach lattice as a whole and for an individual central operator. The ensuing functional calculus for an individual operator is applied to show that central operators have many spectral properties similar to those of normal operators on complex Hilbert spaces. For example, when the spectrum is countable every element is the sum of an order convergent series of eigenvectors.

Riesz representation theorems for vector lattices and Banach lattices of regular operators

For a non-empty locally compact Hausdorff space $X$ and a Dedekind complete normal vector lattice $E$, we show that the vector lattice of norm to order bounded operators from ${\text C}_{\text c}(X)$ or ${\text C}_0(X)$ into $E$ is isomorphic to the vector lattice of $E$-valued regular Borel measures on $X$. When $E$ is an order continuous Banach lattice, the isomorphism is an isometric isomorphism between Banach lattices. When $X$ is compact, every regular operator from $\mathrm{C}(X)$ into $E$ is norm to order bounded. For some spaces $E$, such as KB-spaces or the regular operators on a KB-space, every regular operator from ${\mathrm C}_0(X)$ into $E$ is norm to order bounded. Additional results are obtained for the whole space of regular operators from ${\text C}_{\text c}(X)$ into an order continuous Banach lattice. As a preparation, vector lattices and Banach lattices, resp. cones, of measures with values in a Dedekind complete vector lattice $E$, resp. in the extended positive cone of $E$, are investigated, as well as vector and Banach lattices of norm to order bounded operators. When $E$ is the real numbers, our results specialise to the well-known Riesz representation theorems for the order and norm duals of ${\text C}_{\text c}(X)$ and ${\text C}_0(X)$.

Universal C*-algebras generated by doubly non-commuting isometries

We give an explicit injective representation of the universal $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebra that is generated by doubly non-commuting isometries. This injectivity allows us to prove that such universal algebras embed naturally into each other and also, when combined with Rieffel's theory of deformation, to show that they are nuclear and to compute their K-theory.

Free Banach lattices over pre-ordered Banach spaces

We study free Banach lattices over pre-ordered Banach spaces in the category of Banach lattices of a given convexity type. These generalise the free Banach lattices under convexity conditions over Banach spaces in the literature. Their existence is shown from the existence of free vector lattices over pre-ordered vector spaces, which are also investigated. We determine when the positive contraction from the pre-ordered Banach space into the free Banach lattice is injective or bipositive, and when it has closed range. It is a bipositive embedding with closed range if and only if the positive wedge of the space is a closed normal cone. Even for a Banach lattice it can be non-isometric. By analysing the norm of the free $p$-convex Banach lattice with convexity constant 1 over a pre-ordered Banach space, it becomes clear that it can be realised as a function lattice on the positive part of the dual unit ball. This generalises the known realisation for a free Banach lattice of that type over a Banach space. As a preparation for this analysis of the norm, characterisations of $p$-convex Banach lattices in terms of vector lattice homomorphisms into $\mathrm{L}_p(\mu)$-spaces for probability measures $\mu$ are given.

Spectral theorems for positive algebra homomorphisms

Let $X$ be a locally compact Hausdorff space, let $A$ be a partially ordered algebra, and let $π\colon \mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)\to A$ be a positive algebra homomorphism. Under conditions on $A$ that are satisfied in a good number of cases of practical interest, it is shown that $π$ is represented by a unique regular spectral measure $μ$ on the Borel $σ$-algebra of $X$, taking its values in the positive idempotents in $A$. The measure $μ$, which is $σ$-additive in an ordered sense, represents $π$ via the order integral (a generalisation of the Lebesgue integral) that goes back to J.D.M. Wright and which was investigated earlier by the authors. The positive algebra homomorphism $π$ can be extended from $\mathrm{C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ to a positive linear map from the accompanying $L^1$-space of $μ$ into $A$. It is shown that, quite often, this $L^1$-space is closed under multiplication, so that it is a vector lattice algebra, and that the extended map from $L^1$ into $A$ is not only an algebra homomorphism but, even when $A$ is not a vector lattice, also a vector lattice homomorphism in a sense that is explained in the paper. When $ A$ has the countable sup property, the image of $L^1$ (or of its positive cone) is described in terms of consecutive ups and downs of the image of ${\mathrm C}_{\mathrm c}(X)$ (or of its positive cone). The general results are applied in three different contexts, showing how various spectral theorems have a common order-theoretical root: representations on Banach lattices, on Hilbert spaces, and (the algebra need not consist of operators) spectral theory for JBW-algebras.

Embedded unbounded order convergent sequences in topologically convergent nets in vector lattices

We show that, for a class of locally solid topologies on vector lattices, a topologically convergent net has an embedded sequence that is unbounded order convergent to the same limit. Our result implies, and often improves, many of the known results in this vein in the literature. A study of metrisability and submetrisability of locally solid topologies on vector lattices is included.

Direct limits in categories of normed vector lattices and Banach lattices

After collecting a number of results on interval and almost interval preserving linear maps and vector lattice homomorphisms, we show that direct systems in various categories of normed vector lattices and Banach lattices have direct limits, and that these coincide with direct limits of the systems in naturally associated other categories. For those categories where the general constructions do not work to establish the existence of general direct limits, we describe the basic structure of those direct limits that do exist. A direct system in the category of Banach lattices and contractive almost interval preserving vector lattice homomorphisms has a direct limit. When the Banach lattices in the system all have order continuous norms, then so does the Banach lattice in a direct limit. This is used to show that a Banach function space over a locally compact Hausdorff space has an order continuous norm when the topologies on all compact subsets are metrisable and (the images of) the continuous compactly supported functions are dense.

The order bidual of C(X) for a realcompact space

It is well known that the bidual of $\mathrm C(X)$ for a compact space $X$, supplied with the Arens product, is isometrically isomorphic as a Banach algebra to $\mathrm C(\tilde X)$ for some compact space $\tilde X$. The space $\tilde X$ is unique up to homeomorphism. We establish a similar result for realcompact spaces: The order bidual of $\mathrm C(X)$ for a realcompact space $X$, when supplied with the Arens product, is isomorphic as an $f$-algebra to $\mathrm C(\tilde X)$ for some realcompact space $\tilde X$. The space $\tilde X$ is unique up to homeomorphism.

Free vector lattices over vector spaces as function lattices

We show that a free vector lattice over a real vector space $V$ can be realised canonically as a vector lattice of real-valued positively homogeneous functions on any linear subspace of its dual space that separates the points of $V$. This is used to give intuition for the known fact that the free Banach lattice over a Banach space $E$ can be realised as a Banach lattice of positively homogeneous functions on $E^\ast$. It is also applied to improve the well-known result that free vector lattices over non-empty sets can be realised as vector lattices of real-valued functions. For infinite sets, the underlying spaces for such realisations can be chosen to be smaller than the usual ones.

On order continuous duals of vector lattices of continuous functions on resolvable spaces

A topological space $X$ is called resolvable if it contains a dense subset with dense complement. Using only basic principles, we show that whenever the space $X$ has a resolving subset that can be written as an at most countably infinite union of subsets, in such a way that a given vector lattice of (not necessarily bounded) continuous functions on $X$ separates every point outside the resolving subset from each of its constituents, then the order continuous dual of this lattice is trivial. In order to apply this result in specific cases, we show that several spaces have resolving subsets that can be written as at most countably infinite unions of closed nowhere dense subsets. An appeal to the main result then yields, for example, that, under appropriate conditions, vector lattices of continuous functions on separable spaces, metric spaces, and topological vector spaces have trivial order continuous duals if they separate points and closed nowhere dense subsets. Our results in this direction extend known results in the literature. We also show that, under reasonably mild separation conditions, vector lattices of continuous functions on locally connected $T_1$ Baire spaces without isolated points have trivial order continuous duals. A discussion of the relation between our results and the non-existence of non-zero normal measures is included.

Convergence structures and Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topologies on vector lattice algebras of operators

A vector sublattice of the order bounded operators on a Dedekind complete vector lattice can be supplied with the convergence structures of order convergence, strong order convergence, unbounded order convergence, strong unbounded order convergence, and, when applicable, convergence with respect to a Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology and strong convergence with respect to such a topology. We determine the general validity of the implications between these six convergences on the order bounded operator and on the orthomorphisms. Furthermore, the continuity of left and right multiplications with respect to these convergence structures on the order bounded operators, on the order continuous operators, and on the orthomorphisms is investigated, as is their simultaneous continuity. A number of results are included on the equality of adherences of vector sublattices of the order bounded operators and of the orthomorphisms with respect to these convergence structures. These are consequences of more general results for vector sublattices of arbitrary Dedekind complete vector lattices. The special attention that is paid to vector sublattices of the orthomorphisms is motivated by explaining their relevance for representation theory on vector lattices.

Order Integrals

We define an integral of real-valued functions with respect to a measure that takes its values in the extended positive cone of a partially ordered vector space $E$. The monotone convergence theorem, Fatou's lemma, and the dominated convergence theorem are established; the analogues of the classical ${\mathcal L}^1$- and ${\mathrm L}^1$-spaces are investigated. The results extend earlier work by Wright and specialise to those for the Lebesgue integral when $E$ equals the real numbers. The hypothesis on $E$ that is needed for the definition of the integral and for the monotone convergence theorem to hold ($σ$-monotone completeness) is a rather mild one. It is satisfied, for example, by the space of regular operators between a directed partially ordered vector space and a $σ$-monotone complete partially ordered vector space, and by every JBW-algebra. Fatou's lemma and the dominated convergence theorem hold for every $σ$-Dedekind complete space. When $E$ consists of the regular operators on a Banach lattice with an order continuous norm, or when it consists of the self-adjoint elements of a strongly closed complex linear subspace of the bounded operators on a complex Hilbert space, then the finite measures as in the current paper are precisely the strongly $σ$-additive positive operator-valued measures. When $E$ is a partially ordered Banach space with a closed positive cone, then every positive vector measure is a measure in our sense, but not conversely. Even when a measure falls into both categories, the domain of the integral as defined in this paper can properly contain that of any reasonably defined integral with respect to the vector measure using Banach space methods.

Vector lattices with a Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology

We investigate the construction of a Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology on a vector lattice from a Hausdorff (o)-Lebesgue topology on an order dense ideal, and what the properties of the topologies thus obtained are. When the vector lattice has an order dense ideal with a separating order continuous dual, it is always possible to supply it with such a topology in this fashion, and the restriction of this topology to a regular sublattice is then also a Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology. A regular vector sublattice of $\mathrm{L}_0(X,Σ,μ)$ for a semi-finite measure $μ$ falls into this category, and the convergence of nets in its Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology is then the convergence in measure on subsets of finite measure. When a vector lattice not only has an order dense ideal with a separating order continuous dual, but also has the countable sup property, we show that every net in a regular vector sublattice that converges in its Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology always contains a sequence that is uo-convergent to the same limit. This enables us to give satisfactory answers to various topological questions about uo-convergence in this context.

Free vector lattices and free vector lattice algebras

We show how the existence of various free vector lattices and free vector lattice algebras can be derived from a theorem on equational classes in universal algebra. A discussion about free $f$-algebras over non-empty sets is given, where the main issues appear to be open. It is indicated how the existence results for free vector lattices and vector lattice algebras can be used for easy proofs of existence results for free Banach lattices and free Banach lattice algebras. A detailed exposition of the necessary material from universal algebra is included.

Convergence structures and locally solid topologies on vector lattices of operators

For vector lattices $E$ and $F$, where $F$ is Dedekind complete and supplied with a locally solid topology, we introduce the corresponding locally solid absolute strong operator topology on the order bounded operators $\mathcal L_{\mathrm{ob}}(E,F)$ from $E$ into $F$. Using this, it follows that $\mathcal L_{\mathrm{ob}}(E,F)$ admits a Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology whenever $F$ does. For each of order convergence, unbounded order convergence, and-when applicable-convergence in the Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology, there are both a uniform and a strong convergence structure on $\mathcal L_{\mathrm {ob}}(E,F)$. Of the six conceivable inclusions within these three pairs, only one is generally valid. On the orthomorphisms of a Dedekind complete vector lattice, however, five are generally valid, and the sixth is valid for order bounded nets. The latter condition is redundant in the case of sequences of orthomorphisms on a Banach lattice, as a consequence of a uniform order boundedness principle for orthomorphisms that we establish. We also show that, in contrast to general order bounded operators, the orthomorphisms preserve not only order convergence of nets, but unbounded order convergence and -- when applicable -- convergence in the Hausdorff uo-Lebesgue topology as well.

The structure of doubly non-commuting isometries

Suppose that $n\geq 1$ and that, for all $i$ and $j$ with $1\leq i,j\leq n$ and $i\neq j$, $z_{ij}\in{\mathbb T}$ are given such that $z_{ji}=\overline{z}_{ij}$ for all $i\neq j$. If $V_1,\dotsc, V_n$ are isometries on a Hilbert space such that $V_i^\ast V_j^{\phantom{\ast}}\!=\overline{z}_{ij} V_j^{\phantom{\ast}}\!V_i^\ast$ for all $i\neq j$, then $(V_1,\dotsc,V_n)$ is called an $n$-tuple of doubly non-commuting isometries. The generators of non-commutative tori are well-known examples. In this paper, we establish a simultaneous Wold decomposition for $(V_1,\dotsc,V_n)$. This decomposition enables us to classify such $n$-tuples up to unitary equivalence. We show that the joint listing of a unitary equivalence class of a representation of each of the $2^n$ non-commutative tori that are naturally associated with the structure constants is a classifying invariant. A dilation theorem is also established, showing that an $n$-tuple of doubly non-commuting isometries can be extended to an $n$-tuple of doubly non-commuting unitary operators on an enveloping Hilbert space.

Lattice homomorphisms in harmonic analysis

Let $S$ be a non-empty, closed subspace of a locally compact group $G$ that is a subsemigroup of $G$. Suppose that $X, Y$, and $Z$ are Banach lattices that are vector sublattices of the order dual $\mathrm{C}_{\mathrm{c}}(S,\mathbb R)^\sim$ of the real-valued, continuous functions with compact support on $S$, and where $Z$ is Dedekind complete. Suppose that $\ast: X\times Y\to Z$ is a positive bilinear map such that $\mathrm{supp}\,{(x \ast y)}\subseteq\mathrm{supp}\,{x}\,\cdot\,\mathrm{supp}\,{y}$ for all $x\in X^+$ and $y\in Y^+$ with compact support. We show that, under mild conditions, the canonically associated map from $X$ into the vector lattice of regular operators from $Y$ into $Z$ is then a lattice homomorphism. Applications of this result are given in the context of convolutions, answering questions previously posed in the literature. As a preparation, we show that the order dual of the continuous, compactly supported functions on a closed subspace of a locally compact space can be canonically viewed as an order ideal of the order dual of the continuous, compactly supported functions on the larger space. As another preparation, we show that $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces and Banach lattices of measures on a locally compact space can be embedded as vector sublattices of the order dual of the continuous, compactly supported functions on that space.

Amenable crossed product Banach algebras associated with a class of $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-dynamical systems. II

We prove that the crossed product Banach algebra $\ell^1(G,A;α)$ that is associated with a ${\mathrm C}^\ast$-dynamical system $(A,G,α)$ is amenable if $G$ is a discrete amenable group and $A$ is a strongly amenable ${\mathrm C}^\ast$-algebra. This is a consequence of the combination of a more general result with Paterson's characterisation of strongly amenable unital $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras in terms of invariant means for their unitary groups.
