Dynamical systems associated with crossed products

In this paper, we consider both algebraic crossed products of commutative complex algebras A with the integers under an automorphism of A, and Banach algebra crossed products of commutative C^*-algebras A with the integers under an automorphism of A. We investigate, in particular, connections between algebraic properties of these crossed products and topological properties of naturally associated dynamical systems. For example, we draw conclusions about the ideal structure of the crossed product by investigating the dynamics of such a system. To begin with, we recall results in this direction in the context of an algebraic crossed product and give simplified proofs of generalizations of some of these results. We also investigate new questions, for example about ideal intersection properties of algebras properly between the coefficient algebra A and its commutant A'. Furthermore, we introduce a Banach algebra crossed product and study the relation between the structure of this algebra and the topological dynamics of a naturally associated system.

Local spectral radius formulas for a class of unbounded operators on Banach spaces

We exhibit a general class of unbounded operators in Banach spaces which can be shown to have the single-valued extension property, and for which the local spectrum at suitable points can be determined. We show that a local spectral radius formula holds, analogous to that for a globally defined bounded operator on a Banach space with the single-valued extension property. An operator of the class under consideration can occur in practice as (an extension of) a differential operator which, roughly speaking, can be diagonalised on its domain of smooth test functions via a discrete transform, such that the diagonalising transform establishes an isomorphism of topological vector spaces between the domain of the differential operator, in its own topology, and a sequence space. We give concrete examples of (extensions of) such operators (constant coefficient differential operators on the d-torus, Jacobi operators, the Hermite operator, Laguerre operators) and indicate further perspectives.

Crossed products of Banach algebras. I

We construct a crossed product Banach algebra from a Banach algebra dynamical system $(A,G,α)$ and a given uniformly bounded class $R$ of continuous covariant Banach space representations of that system. If $A$ has a bounded left approximate identity, and $R$ consists of non-degenerate continuous covariant representations only, then the non-degenerate bounded representations of the crossed product are in bijection with the non-degenerate $R$-continuous covariant representations of the system. This bijection, which is the main result of the paper, is also established for involutive Banach algebra dynamical systems and then yields the well-known representation theoretical correspondence for the crossed product $C^*$-algebra as commonly associated with a $C^*$-algebra dynamical system as a special case. Taking the algebra $A$ to be the base field, the crossed product construction provides, for a given non-empty class of Banach spaces, a Banach algebra with a relatively simple structure and with the property that its non-degenerate contractive representations in the spaces from that class are in bijection with the isometric strongly continuous representations of $G$ in those spaces. This generalizes the notion of a group $C^*$-algebra, and may likewise be used to translate issues concerning group representations in a class of Banach spaces to the context of a Banach algebra, simpler than $L^1(G)$, where more functional analytic structure is present.

Local spectral radius formulas on compact Lie groups

We determine the local spectrum of a central element of the complexified universal enveloping algebra of a compact connected Lie group at a smooth function as an element of L^p(G). Based on this result we establish a corresponding local spectral radius formula.

Real Paley-Wiener theorems and local spectral radius formulas

We systematically develop real Paley-Wiener theory for the Fourier transform on R^d for Schwartz functions, L^p-functions and distributions, in an elementary treatment based on the inversion theorem. As an application, we show how versions of classical Paley-Wiener theorems can be derived from the real ones via an approach which does not involve domain shifting and which may be put to good use for other transforms of Fourier type as well. An explanation is also given why the easily applied classical Paley-Wiener theorems are unlikely to be able to yield information about the support of a function or distribution which is more precise than giving its convex hull, whereas real Paley-Wiener theorems can be used to reconstruct the support precisely, albeit at the cost of combinatorial complexity. We indicate a possible application of real Paley-Wiener theory to partial differential equations in this vein and furthermore we give evidence that a number of real Paley-Wiener results can be expected to have an interpretation as local spectral radius formulas. A comprehensive overview of the literature on real Paley-Wiener theory is included.

Extending representations of normed algebras in Banach spaces

Let X be a non-degenerate left Banach module over a normed algebra A having a bounded approximate left identity. We show that, if A is a left ideal of a larger algebra, then this representation can be extended to a representation of the larger algebra. Based on this result, we study in detail the existence and properties of representations of the various centralizer algebras of A which are compatible with the original representation of A. As a special case we obtain that, if A embeds as a topological algebra into the bounded operators on X, then the left centralizer algebra of $A$ embeds as a topological algebra as the left normalizer of the image, and the double centralizer algebra of A embeds as a topological algebra as the normalizer of the image. We also consider ordered and involutive contexts, and cover the right-sided cases, which are not always the obvious analogues of the left-sided cases, in detail as well.

Algebraic curves for commuting elements in the q-deformed Heisenberg algebra

In this paper we extend the eliminant construction of Burchnall and Chaundy for commuting differential operators in the Heisenberg algebra to the q-deformed Heisenberg algebra and show that it again provides annihilating curves for commuting elements, provided q satisfies a natural condition. As a side result we obtain estimates on the dimensions of the eigenspaces of elements of this algebra in its faithful module of Laurent series.

Dynamical Systems and Commutants in Crossed Products

In this paper we describe the commutant of an arbitrary subalgebra $A$ of the algebra of functions on a set $X$ in a crossed product of $A$ with the integers, where the latter act on $A$ by a composition automorphism defined via a bijection of $X$. The resulting conditions which are necessary and sufficient for $A$ to be maximal abelian in the crossed product are subsequently applied to situations where these conditions can be shown to be equivalent to a condition in topological dynamics. As a further step, using the Gelfand transform we obtain for a commutative completely regular semi-simple Banach algebra a topological dynamical condition on its character space which is equivalent to the algebra being maximal abelian in a crossed product with the integers.

Algebraic dependence of commuting elements in algebras

The aim of this paper to draw attention to several aspects of the algebraic dependence in algebras. The article starts with discussions of the algebraic dependence problem in commutative algebras. Then the Burchnall-Chaundy construction for proving algebraic dependence and obtaining the corresponding algebraic curves for commuting differential operators in the Heisenberg algebra is reviewed. Next some old and new results on algebraic dependence of commuting q-difference operators and elements in q-deformed Heisenberg algebras are reviewed. The main ideas and essence of two proofs of this are reviewed and compared. One is the algorithmic dimension growth existence proof. The other is the recent proof extending the Burchnall-Chaundy approach from differential operators and the Heisenberg algebra to the q-deformed Heisenberg algebra, showing that the Burchnall-Chaundy eliminant construction indeed provides annihilating curves for commuting elements in the q-deformed Heisenberg algebras for q not a root of unity.

Commutative $C^*$-algebras and $σ$-normal morphisms

We prove in an elementary fashion that the image of a commutative monotone $σ$-complete $C^*$-algebra under a $σ$-normal morphism is again monotone $σ$-complete and give an application of this result in spectral theory.

Paley-Wiener theorems for the Dunkl transform

We conjecture a geometrical form of the Paley-Wiener theorem for the Dunkl transform and prove three instances thereof, one of which involves a limit transition from Opdam's results for the graded Hecke algebra. Furthermore, the connection between Dunkl operators and the Cartan motion group is established. It is shown how the algebra of radial parts of invariant differential operators can be described explicitly in terms of Dunkl operators, which implies that the generalized Bessel functions coincide with the spherical functions. In this context, the restriction of Dunkl's intertwining operator to the invariants can be interpreted in terms of the Abel transform. Using shift operators we also show that, for certain values of the multiplicities of the restricted roots, the Abel transform is essentially inverted by a differential operator.

Subspaces with equal closure

We take a unifying and new approach toward polynomial and trigonometric approximation in an arbitrary number of variables, resulting in a precise and general ready-to-use tool that anyone can easily apply in new situations of interest. The key idea is to show, in considerable generality, that a module, which is generated over the polynomials or trigonometric functions by some set, necessarily has the same closure as the module which is generated by this same set, but now over the compactly supported smooth functions. The particular properties of the ambient space or generating set are to a large degree irrelevant. This translation -- which goes in fact beyond modules -- allows us, by what is now essentially a straightforward check of a few properties, to replace many classical results by more general and stronger statements of a hitherto unknown type. As a side result, we also obtain a new integral criterion for multidimensional measures to be determinate. At the technical level, we use quasi-analytic classes in several variables and we show that two well-known families of one-dimensional weights are essentially equal. The method can be formulated for Lie groups and this interpretation shows that many classical approximation theorems are "actually" theorems on the unitary dual of n-dimensional real space. Polynomials then correspond to the universal enveloping algebra.

Determinate multidimensional measures, the extended Carleman theorem and quasi-analytic weights

We prove in a direct fashion that a multidimensional probability measure is determinate if the higher dimensional analogue of Carleman's condition is satisfied. In that case, the polynomials, as well as certain proper subspaces of the trigonometric functions, are dense in the associated L_p spaces for all finite p. In particular these three statements hold if the reciprocal of a quasi-analytic weight has finite integral under the measure. We give practical examples of such weights, based on their classification. As in the one dimensional case, the results on determinacy of measures supported on R^n lead to sufficient conditions for determinacy of measures supported in a positive convex cone, i.e. the higher dimensional analogue of determinacy in the sense of Stieltjes.

Asymptotic analysis for the Dunkl kernel

This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of the integral kernel of the Dunkl transform, the so-called Dunkl kernel, when one of its arguments is fixed and the other tends to infinity either within a Weyl chamber of the associated reflection group, or within a suitable complex domain. The obtained results are based on the asymptotic analysis of an associated system of ordinary differential equations. They generalize the well-known asymptotics of the confluent hypergeometric function $\phantom{}_1F_1$ to the higher-dimensional setting and include a complete short-time asymptotics for the Dunkl-type heat kernel. As an application, it is shown that the representing measures of Dunkl's intertwining operator are generically continuous.
