Nuclear structure in strong magnetic fields: nuclei in the crust of a magnetar

Covariant density functional theory is used to study the effect of strong magnetic fields, up to the limit predicted for neutron stars (for magnetars $B \approx10^{18}$G), on nuclear structure. All new terms in the equation of motion resulting from time reversal symmetry breaking by the magnetic field and the induced currents, as well as axial deformation, are taken into account in a self-consistent fashion. For nuclei in the iron region of the nuclear chart it is found that fields in the order of magnitude of $10^{17}$G significantly affect bulk properties like masses and radii.

Residual interaction in Second RPA with density-dependent forces. Rearrangement terms

We derive the expression for the residual interaction to be used in the framework of the Second RPA with density-dependent forces. The adopted procedure is based on a variational approach. It is found that the residual interaction to be used in RPA and beyond RPA matrix elements is not the same as far as the rearrangement terms are concerned. A detailed derivation of the matrix elements coupling 1 particle-1 hole with 2 particle-2 hole and 2 particle-2 hole among themselves has been done and the corresponding rearrangement terms are shown here. This formal result indicates that both the currently used prescriptions, namely (i) using the same type of rearrangement terms in RPA and beyond RPA matrix elements or (ii) neglecting the rearrangement terms in beyond RPA matrix elements, are not correct.

Extended Skyrme interaction (II): ground state of nuclei and of nuclear matter

We study the effect of time-odd components of the Skyrme energy density functionals on the ground state of finite nuclei and in nuclear matter. The spin-density dependent terms, which have been recently proposed as an extension of the standard Skyrme interaction, are shown to change the total binding energy of odd-nuclei by only few tenths of keV, while the time-odd components of standard Skyrme interactions give an effect that is larger by one order of magnitude. The HFB-17 mass formula based on a Skyrme parametrization is adjusted including the new spin-density dependent terms. A comprehensive study of binding energies in the whole mass table of 2149 nuclei gives a root mean square (rms) deviation of 0.575 MeV between experimental data and the calculated results, which is slightly better than the original HFB-17 mass formula. From the analysis of the spin instabilities of nuclear matter, restrictions on the parameters governing the spin-density dependent terms are evaluated. We conclude that with the extended Skyrme interaction, the Landau parameters $G_0$ and $G_0^\prime$ could be tuned with a large flexibility without changing the ground-state properties in nuclei and in nuclear matter.

Constraining the nuclear pairing gap with pairing vibrations

Pairing interactions with various density dependencies (surface/volume mixing) are constrained with the two-neutron separation energy in the Tin isotopic chain. The response associated with pairing vibrations in very neutron-rich nuclei is sensitive to the density dependence of the pairing interaction. Using the same pairing interaction in nuclear matter and in Tin nuclei, the range of densities where the LDA is valid in the pairing channel is also studied.

Non-standard pairing in asymmetric trapped Fermi gases

We study an ultracold trapped Fermi gas of atoms in two hyperfine states with unequal populations. In this situation the usual BCS pairing is suppressed and non-standard pairing mechanisms become important. These are treated by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, which at the same time correctly take into account the finite size of the trapped system. We find results which can be viewed as generalization of the LOFF phase to finite systems.

Microscopic description of the twist mode in normal and superfluid trapped Fermi gases

We investigate the "twist" mode (rotation of the upper against the lower hemisphere) of a dilute atomic Fermi gas in a spherical trap. The normal and superfluid phases are considered. The linear response to this external perturbation is calculated within the microscopic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach. In the normal phase the excitation spectrum is concentrated in a rather narrow peak very close to the trapping frequency. In the superfluid phase the strength starts to be damped and fragmented and the collectivity of the mode is progressively lost when the temperature decreases. In the weak-pairing regime some reminiscence of the collective motion still exists, whereas in the strong-pairing regime the twist mode is completely washed out. The disappearance of the twist mode in the strong-pairing regime with decreasing temperature is interpreted in the framework of the two-fluid model.

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory versus local-density approximation for superfluid trapped fermionic atoms

We investigate a gas of superfluid fermionic atoms trapped in two hyperfine states by a spherical harmonic potential. We propose a new regularization method to remove the ultraviolet divergence in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations caused by the use of a zero-range atom-atom interaction. Compared with a method used in the literature, our method is simpler and has improved convergence properties. Then we compare Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations with the semiclassical local-density approximation. We observe that for systems containing a small number of atoms shell effects, which cannot be reproduced by the semiclassical calculation, are very important. For systems with a large number of atoms at zero temperature the two calculations are in quite good agreement, which, however, is deteriorated at non-zero temperature, especially near the critical temperature. In this case the different behavior can be explained within the Ginzburg-Landau theory.
