Quantum simulation of a lattice Schwinger model in a chain of trapped ions

We discuss how a lattice Schwinger model can be realized in a linear ion trap, allowing a detailed study of the physics of Abelian lattice gauge theories related to one-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. Relying on the rich quantum-simulation toolbox available in state-of-the-art trapped-ion experiments, we show how one can engineer an effectively gauge-invariant dynamics by imposing energetic constraints, provided by strong Ising-like interactions. Applying exact diagonalization to ground-state and time-dependent properties, we study the underlying microscopic model, and discuss undesired interaction terms and other imperfections. As our analysis shows, the proposed scheme allows for the observation in realistic setups of spontaneous parity- and charge-symmetry breaking, as well as false-vacuum decay. Besides an implementation aimed at larger ion chains, we also discuss a minimal setting, consisting of only four ions in a simpler experimental setup, which enables to probe basic physical phenomena related to the full many-body problem. The proposal opens a new route for analog quantum simulation of high-energy and condensed-matter models where gauge symmetries play a prominent role.

Cluster Luttinger Liquids of Rydberg-dressed Atoms in Optical Lattices

We investigate the zero-temperature phases of bosonic and fermionic gases confined to one dimension and interacting via a class of finite-range soft-shoulder potentials (i.e. soft-core potentials with an additional hard-core onsite interaction). Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we demonstrate the stabilization of critical quantum liquids with qualitatively new features with respect to the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid paradigm. These features result from frustration and cluster formation in the corresponding classical ground-state. Characteristic signatures of these liquids are accessible in state-of-the-art experimental setups with Rydberg-dressed ground-state atoms trapped in optical lattices.

Majorana edge states in two atomic wires coupled by pair-hopping

We present evidence for the existence of Majorana edge states in a number conserving theory describing a system of spinless fermions on two wires that are coupled by a pair hopping. Our analysis is based on the combination of a qualitative low energy approach and numerical techniques using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group. We also discuss an experimental realization of pair-hopping interactions in cold atom gases confined in optical lattices, and its possible alternative applications to quantum simulation.

Critical properties and Rényi entropies of the spin-3/2 XXZ chain

We discuss entanglement and critical properties of the spin-3/2 XXZ chain in its entire gapless region. Employing density-matrix renormalization group calculations combined with different methods based on level spectroscopy, correlation functions and entanglement entropies, we determine the sound velocity and the Luttinger parameter of the model as a function of the anisotropy parameter. Then, we focus on entanglement properties by systematically studying the behavior of Rényi entropies under both open and periodic boundary conditions, providing further evidence of recent findings about entanglement entropies of excited states in conformal field theory.

Pairing, crystallization and string correlations of mass-imbalanced atomic mixtures in one-dimensional optical lattices

We numerically determine the very rich phase diagram of mass-imbalanced binary mixtures of hardcore bosons (or equivalently -- fermions, or hardcore-Bose/Fermi mixtures) loaded in one-dimensional optical lattices. Focusing on commensurate fillings away from half filling, we find a strong asymmetry between attractive and repulsive interactions. Attraction is found to always lead to pairing, associated with a spin gap, and to pair crystallization for very strong mass imbalance. In the repulsive case the two atomic components remain instead fully gapless over a large parameter range; only a very strong mass imbalance leads to the opening of a spin gap. The spin-gap phase is the precursor of a crystalline phase occurring for an even stronger mass imbalance. The fundamental asymmetry of the phase diagram is at odds with recent theoretical predictions, and can be tested directly via time-of-flight experiments on trapped cold atoms.

Pinning quantum phase transition for a Luttinger liquid of strongly interacting bosons

One of the most remarkable results of quantum mechanics is the fact that many-body quantum systems may exhibit phase transitions even at zero temperature. Quantum fluctuations, deeply rooted in Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, and not thermal fluctuations, drive the system from one phase to another. Typically, the relative strength of two competing terms in the system's Hamiltonian is changed across a finite critical value. A well-known example is the Mott-Hubbard quantum phase transition from a superfluid to an insulating phase, which has been observed for weakly interacting bosonic atomic gases. However, for strongly interacting quantum systems confined to lower-dimensional geometry a novel type of quantum phase transition may be induced for which an arbitrarily weak perturbation to the Hamiltonian is sufficient to drive the transition. Here, for a one-dimensional (1D) quantum gas of bosonic caesium atoms with tunable interactions, we observe the commensurate-incommensurate quantum phase transition from a superfluid Luttinger liquid to a Mott-insulator. For sufficiently strong interactions, the transition is induced by adding an arbitrarily weak optical lattice commensurate with the atomic granularity, which leads to immediate pinning of the atoms. We map out the phase diagram and find that our measurements in the strongly interacting regime agree well with a quantum field description based on the exactly solvable sine-Gordon model. We trace the phase boundary all the way to the weakly interacting regime where we find good agreement with the predictions of the 1D Bose-Hubbard model. Our results open up the experimental study of quantum phase transitions, criticality, and transport phenomena beyond Hubbard-type models in the context of ultracold gases.
