Overdetermined problems for the rotationally invariant Poisson equation in model manifolds

We present rigidity results for overdetermined problems associated to the rotationally invariant Poisson equation $-\Delta_{g_\mathcal{M}} u = f(r)$ in a model manifold $\mathcal{M} = [0,S) \times_h \mathbb S^{N-1}$ with warping function $h$. The variable $r$ ranges in the interval $[0,S)$, whose endpoint $S$ is positive and possibly infinite. The first part of the paper deals with the problem \[ \begin{array}{ll} -\Delta_{g_\mathcal{M}} {u}=f(r) &\mbox{in $\Omega$}, u=\varphi(r) &\mbox{on $\partial \Omega$}, \frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu} = \kappa(r) &\mbox{on $\partial \Omega$}, \end{array} \] where $\Omega \subset \mathcal{M}$ is a bounded domain containing the point $O \in \mathcal{M}$ corresponding to $r = 0$, $\nu$ is the exterior unit normal vector on $\partial \Omega$, and $f$, $\varphi$, $\kappa$ are three prescribed functions. In the second part of the paper, we consider a similar overdetermined problem for the exterior Bernoulli problem in a domain $\Omega \setminus \overline B_{R_0}(O)$, where $B_{R_0}(O)$ denotes the geodesic ball centered at $O$ with radius $R_0$, within the class of functions that vanish on $\partial B_{R_0}(O)$. In both cases, we give conditions on $f$, $\varphi$ and $\kappa$ implying that the solution $u$ is radial and $\Omega$ is a geodesic ball centered at $O$. Our results apply in particular to the three space forms $\mathbb{R}^N$, $\mathbb{H}^N$ and $\mathbb{S}^N$.

Donaldson Functional in Teichmüller Theory

In this paper we define a Donaldson type functional whose Euler-Lagrange equations are a system of differential equations which corresponds to Hitchin's self-duality equations for a suitable choice of Higgs bundle on closed Riemann surfaces. The main challenge of this functional is its lack of regularity and lack of compactness when defined in its natural domain of definition. Though a standard variational approach cannot directly be applied, we provide the appropriate analytical tools that make Donaldson functional treatable by a variational viewpoint. We prove that this functional admits a unique critical point corresponding to its global minimum. As an immediate consequence, we find that this system of self-duality equations admits a unique solution. Among the applications in geometry of this fact, we obtain a parametrization of closed constant mean curvature immersions in hyperbolic manifolds (possibly incomplete), and their moduli spaces.

Harnack inequalities and quantization properties for the n-Liouville equation

We consider a quasilinear equation involving the $n-$Laplacian and an exponential nonlinearity, a problem that includes the celebrated Liouville equation in the plane as a special case. For a non-compact sequence of solutions it is known that the exponential nonlinearity converges, up to a subsequence, to a sum of Dirac measures. By performing a precise local asymptotic analysis we complete such a result by showing that the corresponding Dirac masses are quantized as multiples of a given one, related to the mass of limiting profiles after rescaling according to the classification result obtained by the first author in P. Esposito, A classification result for the quasi-linear Liouville equation. Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Anal. Non Linèaire 35 (2018), no. 3, 781--801. A fundamental tool is provided here by some Harnack inequality of "sup+inf" type, a question of independent interest that we prove in the quasilinear context through a new and simple blow-up approach.

Bifurcation for Minimal Surface Equation in Hyperbolic $3$-Manifolds

Initiated by the work of Uhlenbeck in late 1970s, we study questions about the existence, multiplicity and asymptotic behavior for minimal immersions of closed surface in some hyperbolic three-manifold, with prescribed conformal structure on the surface and second fundamental form of the immersion. We prove several results in these directions. In particular, we determine when exactly the solution is unique and when multiple solutions appear. Moreover, we analyze in detail the asymptotic behavior of the solutions when (and how) blowing up might occur. Interestingly the blow-up analysis exhibit different behaviors when the surface is of genus two or greater. Furthermore, we extend this program to consider similar problems where the total extrinsic curvature is prescribed and we prove an existence result.

Criticality theory for Schrodinger operators with singular potential

In a seminal work, B. Simon provided a classification of nonnegative Schrödinger operators $-Δ+V$ into subcritical and critical operators based on the long-term behaviour of the associated heat kernel. Later works by others developed an alternative subcritical/critical classification based on whether or not the operator admits a weighted spectral gap. All these works dealt only with potentials that ensured the validity of Harnack's inequality, typically potentials in $L^p_{loc}$ for some $p > \frac{N}{2}$. This paper extends such a weighted spectral gap classification to a large class of locally integrable potentials $V$ called balanced potentials here. Harnack's inequality will not hold in general for such potentials. In addition to the standard potentials in the space $L^p_{loc}$ for some $p > \frac{N}{2}$, this class contains potentials which are locally bounded above or more generally, those for which the positive and negative singularities are separated as well as those for which the interaction of the positive and negative singularities is not "too strong". We also establish for such potentials, under the additional assumption that $V^+ \in L^p_{loc}$ for some $p > \frac{N}{2}$, versions of the Agmon-Allegretto-Piepenbrink Principle characterising the subcritical/critical operators in terms of the cone of positive distributional super-solutions (or solutions). A compressed version of this work has appeared in the paper : M. Lucia and S. Prashanth, Criticality theory for Schrodinger operators with singular potential, J. Differential Equations 265(2018), 3400-3440. We also remove here some restrictions imposed in section 10.3 of this paper.

Antisymmetry of solutions for some weighted elliptic problems

This article concerns the antisymmetry, uniqueness, and monotonicity properties of solutions to some elliptic functionals involving weights and a double well potential. In the one-dimensional case, we introduce the continuous odd rearrangement of an increasing function and we show that it decreases the energy functional when the weights satisfy a certain convexity-type hypothesis. This leads to the antisymmetry or oddness of increasing solutions (and not only of minimizers). We also prove a uniqueness result (which leads to antisymmetry) where a convexity-type condition by Berestycki and Nirenberg on the weights is improved to a monotonicity condition. In addition, we provide with a large class of problems where antisymmetry does not hold. Finally, some rather partial extensions in higher dimensions are also given.

The $p$-Royden and $p$-harmonic boundaries for metric measure spaces

Let $p$ be a real number greater than one and let $X$ be a locally compact, noncompact metric measure space that satisfies certain conditions. The $p$-Royden and $p$-harmonic boundaries of $X$ are constructed by using the $p$-Royden algebra of functions on $X$ and a Dirichlet type problem is solved for the $p$-Royden boundary. We also characterize the metric measure spaces whose $p$-harmonic boundary is empty.

Ergodicity and spectral cascades in point vortex flows on the sphere

We present results for the equilibrium statistics and dynamic evolution of moderately large ($n = {\mathcal{O}}(10^2 - 10^3)$) numbers of interacting point vortices on the unit sphere under the constraint of zero mean angular momentum. We consider a binary gas consisting of equal numbers of vortices with positive and negative circulations. When the circulations are chosen to be proportional to $1/\sqrt{n}$, the energy probability distribution function, $p(E)$, converges rapidly with $n$ to a function that has a single maximum, corresponding to a maximum in entropy. Ensemble-averaged wavenumber spectra of the nonsingular velocity field induced by the vortices exhibit the expected $k^{-1}$ behavior at small scales for all energies. The spectra at the largest scales vary continuously with the inverse temperature $β$ of the system and show a transition from positively sloped to negatively sloped as $β$ becomes negative. The dynamics are ergodic and, regardless of the initial configuration of the vortices, statistical measures simply relax towards microcanonical ensemble measures at all observed energies. As such, the direction of any cascade process measured by the evolution of the kinetic energy spectrum depends only on the relative differences between the initial spectrum and the ensemble mean spectrum at that energy; not on the energy, or temperature, of the system.

Holomorphic Cubic Differentials and Minimal Lagrangian Surfaces in CH2

Following earlier work of Loftin-McIntosh, we study minimal Lagrangian immersions of the universal cover of a closed surface (of genus at least 2) into CH2, with prescribed data of a conformal structure plus a holomorphic cubic differential. We show existence and non-uniqueness of such minimal Lagrangian immersions. We also establish the surface area with respect to the induced metric as a Weil-Petersson potential function for the space of holomorphic cubic differentials on the Riemann surface.

Minimal immersions of closed surfaces in hyperbolic three-manifolds

We study minimal immersions of closed surfaces (of genus $g \ge 2$) in hyperbolic 3-manifolds, with prescribed data $(σ, tα)$, where $σ$ is a conformal structure on a topological surface $S$, and $αdz^2$ is a holomorphic quadratic differential on the surface $(S,σ)$. We show that, for each $t \in (0,τ_0)$ for some $τ_0 > 0$, depending only on $(σ, α)$, there are at least two minimal immersions of closed surface of prescribed second fundamental form $Re(tα)$ in the conformal structure $σ$. Moreover, for $t$ sufficiently large, there exists no such minimal immersion. Asymptotically, as $t \to 0$, the principal curvatures of one minimal immersion tend to zero, while the intrinsic curvatures of the other blow up in magnitude.
