Star-shaped acceptability indexes

We propose the star-shaped acceptability indexes as generalizations of both the approaches of Cherny and Madan (2009) and Rosazza Gianin and Sgarra (2013) in the same vein as star-shaped risk measures generalize both the classes of coherent and convex risk measures in Castagnoli et al. (2022). We characterize acceptability indexes through star-shaped risk measures, star-shaped acceptance sets, and as the minimum of a family of quasi-concave acceptability indexes. Further, we introduce concrete examples under our approach linked to Value at Risk, risk-adjusted reward on capital, reward-based gain-loss ratio, monotone reward-deviation ratio, and robust acceptability indexes.

The limitations of comonotonic additive risk measures: a literature review

Risk measures satisfying the axiom of comonotonic additivity are extensively studied, arguably because of the plethora of results indicating interesting aspects of such risk measures. Recent research, however, has shown that this axiom is incompatible with central properties in specific contexts. In this paper, we present a literature review of these incompatibilities. In addition, we use the Choquet representation of comonotonic additive risk measures to show they cannot be surplus invariant.

A note on the induction of comonotonic additive risk measures from acceptance sets

We present simple general conditions on the acceptance sets under which their induced monetary risk and deviation measures are comonotonic additive. We show that acceptance sets induce comonotonic additive risk measures if and only if the acceptance sets and their complements are stable under convex combinations of comonotonic random variables. A generalization of this result applies to risk measures that are additive for random variables with a priori specified dependence structures, e.g., perfectly correlated, uncorrelated, or independent random variables.

A risk measurement approach from risk-averse stochastic optimization of score functions

We propose a risk measurement approach for a risk-averse stochastic problem. We provide results that guarantee that our problem has a solution. We characterize and explore the properties of the argmin as a risk measure and the minimum as a deviation measure. We provide a connection between linear regression models and our framework. Based on this conception, we consider conditional risk and provide a connection between the minimum deviation portfolio and linear regression. Moreover, we also link the optimal replication hedging to our framework.

A theory for combinations of risk measures

We study combinations of risk measures under no restrictive assumption on the set of alternatives. We develop and discuss results regarding the preservation of properties and acceptance sets for the combinations of risk measures. One of the main results is the representation of resulting risk measures from the properties of both alternative functionals and combination functions. We build on developing a dual representation for an arbitrary mixture of convex risk measures. In this case, we obtain a penalty that recalls the notion of inf-convolution under theoretical measure integration. We develop results related to this specific context. We also explore features of individual interest generated by our frameworks, such as the preservation of continuity properties and the representation of worst-case risk measures.

Star-Shaped deviations

We propose the Star-Shaped deviation measures in the same vein as Star-Shaped risk measures and Star-Shaped acceptability indexes. We characterize Star-Shaped deviation measures through Star-Shaped acceptance sets and as the minimum of a family of Convex deviation measures. We also expose an interplay between Star-Shaped risk measures and deviation measures.

Inf-convolution and optimal risk sharing with countable sets of risk measures

The inf-convolution of risk measures is directly related to risk sharing and general equilibrium, and it has attracted considerable attention in mathematical finance and insurance problems. However, the theory is restricted to finite sets of risk measures. This study extends the inf-convolution of risk measures in its convex-combination form to a countable (not necessarily finite) set of alternatives. The intuitive meaning of this approach is to represent a generalization of the current finite convex weights to the countable case. Subsequently, we extensively generalize known properties and results to this framework. Specifically, we investigate the preservation of properties, dual representations, optimal allocations, and self-convolution.

On the link between monetary and star-shaped risk measures

Recently, Castagnoli et al. (2021) introduce the class of star-shaped risk measures as a generalization of convex and coherent ones, proving that there is a representation as the pointwise minimum of some family composed by convex risk measures. Concomitantly, Jia et al. (2020) prove a similar representation result for monetary risk measures, which are more general than star-shaped ones. Then, there is a question on how both classes are connected. In this letter, we provide an answer by casting light on the importance of the acceptability of 0, which is linked to the property of normalization. We then show that under mild conditions, a monetary risk measure is only a translation away from star-shapedness.

On a robust risk measurement approach for capital determination errors minimization

We propose a robust risk measurement approach that minimizes the expectation of overestimation plus underestimation costs. We consider uncertainty by taking the supremum over a collection of probability measures, relating our approach to dual sets in the representation of coherent risk measures. We provide results that guarantee the existence of a solution and explore the properties of minimizer and minimum as risk and deviation measures, respectively. An empirical illustration is carried out to demonstrate the use of our approach in capital determination.

Spectral risk measures and uncertainty

Risk assessment under different possible scenarios is a source of uncertainty that may lead to concerning financial losses. We address this issue, first, by adapting a robust framework to the class of spectral risk measures. Second, we propose a Deviation-based approach to quantify uncertainty. Furthermore, the theory is illustrated with a practical case study from NASDAQ index.

A composition between risk and deviation measures

The intuition of risk is based on two main concepts: loss and variability. In this paper, we present a composition of risk and deviation measures, which contemplate these two concepts. Based on the proposed Limitedness axiom, we prove that this resulting composition, based on properties of the two components, is a coherent risk measure. Similar results for the cases of convex and co-monotone risk measures are exposed. We also provide examples of known and new risk measures constructed under this framework in order to highlight the importance of our approach, especially the role of the Limitedness axiom.

Extended Gini-type measures of risk and variability

The aim of this paper is to introduce a risk measure that extends the Gini-type measures of risk and variability, the Extended Gini Shortfall, by taking risk aversion into consideration. Our risk measure is coherent and catches variability, an important concept for risk management. The analysis is made under the Choquet integral representations framework. We expose results for analytic computation under well-known distribution functions. Furthermore, we provide a practical application.

Shortfall Deviation Risk: An alternative to risk measurement

We present the Shortfall Deviation Risk (SDR), a risk measure that represents the expected loss that occurs with certain probability penalized by the dispersion of results that are worse than such an expectation. SDR combines Expected Shortfall (ES) and Shortfall Deviation (SD), which we also introduce, contemplating two fundamental pillars of the risk concept, the probability of adverse events and the variability of an expectation, and considers extreme results. We demonstrate that SD is a generalized deviation measure, whereas SDR is a coherent risk measure. We achieve the dual representation of SDR, and we discuss issues such as its representation by a weighted ES, acceptance sets, convexity, continuity and the relationship with stochastic dominance. Illustrations with real and simulated data allow us to conclude that SDR offers greater protection in risk measurement compared with VaR and ES, especially in times of significant turbulence in riskier scenarios.
