We give an algebraic presentation of directed acyclic graph structure, introducing a symmetric monoidal equational theory whose free PROP we characterise as that of finite abstract dags with input/output interfaces. Our development provides an initial-algebra semantics for dag structure.
We provide a mathematical theory and methodology for synthesising equational logics from algebraic metatheories. We illustrate our methodology by means of two applications: a rational reconstruction of Birkhoff's Equational Logic and a new equational logic for reasoning about algebraic structure with name-binding operators.
We show that Thompson's group F is the symmetry group of the "generic idempotent". That is, take the monoidal category freely generated by an object A and an isomorphism A \otimes A --> A; then F is the group of automorphisms of A.
A rig is a riNg without Negatives. We analyse the free rig on a generator x subject to the equivalence x = 1 + x + x^2, showing that in it the non-constant polynomials form a ring. This ring can be identified with the Gaussian integers, which thus acquire objective meaning.
In many everyday categories (sets, spaces, modules, ...) objects can be both added and multiplied. The arithmetic of such objects is a challenge because there is usually no subtraction. We prove a family of cases of the following principle: if an arithmetic statement about the objects can be proved by pretending that they are complex numbers, then there also exists an honest proof.
