On the Hofer-Zehnder conjecture for semipositive symplectic manifolds

We show that, on a closed semipositive symplectic manifold with semisimple quantum homology, any Hamiltonian diffeomorphism possessing more contractible fixed points, counted homologically, than the total Betti number of the manifold, must have infinitely many periodic points. This generalizes to the semipositive setting the beautiful result of Shelukhin on the Hofer-Zehnder conjecture.

On the spectral diameter of the Grassmannians

The diameter of the spectral pseudometric on the universal cover of the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,p)$ is shown to be finite whenever $p$ is a prime number. On the other hand, it is shown that the diameter is infinite in the case of $\mathrm{Gr}(2k,2n)$ for all natural numbers $k<n$.

Weinstein exactness of nearby Lagrangians and related questions

We address the following problem: if a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism maps a Lagrangian submanifold $L$ to a small Weinstein neighborhood of $L$, is the image necessarily Hamiltonian isotopic to $L$ inside that neighborhood? On the one hand, we show that the question can have a negative answer in any symplectic manifold of dimension at least six. On the other hand, we answer an a priori weaker form of the question in the positive in various cases when $L$ satisfies a rationality condition: we prove that the image of $L$ is often exact inside the Weinstein neighborhood. We provide applications to the Lagrangian counterpart of the $C^0$ flux conjecture, to $C^0$-rigidity phenomena of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, and to topological properties of spaces of Lagrangians with the same rationality constraint. Moreover, we state and prove cases of an analogue of Viterbo's spectral norm conjecture for non-exact Lagrangians; in the process, we make progress on an old question of Viterbo regarding integer difference vectors between points of Lagrangians.

The number of periodic points of surface symplectic diffeomorphisms

We use symplectic tools to establish a smooth variant of Franks theorem for a closed orientable surface of positive genus $g$; it implies that a symplectic diffeomorphism isotopic to the identity with more than $2g-2$ fixed points, counted homologically, has infinitely many periodic points. Furthermore, we present examples of symplectic diffeomorphisms with a prescribed number of periodic points. In particular, we construct symplectic flows on surfaces possessing only one fixed point and no other periodic orbits.

The spectral diameter of a symplectic ellipsoid

The spectral diameter of a symplectic ball is shown to be equal to its capacity; this result upgrades the known bound by a factor of two and yields a simple formula for the spectral diameter of a symplectic ellipsoid. We also study the relationship between the spectral diameter and packings by two balls.

Lagrangian Intersections and the spectral norm in convex-at-infinity symplectic manifolds

Given a compact Lagrangian $L$ in a semipositive convex-at-infinity symplectic manifold $W$, we establish a cup-length estimate for the action values of $L$ associated to a Hamiltonian isotopy whose spectral norm is smaller than some $\hbar(L)$. When $L$ is rational, this implies a cup-length estimate on the number of intersection points. This Chekanov-type result generalizes a theorem of Kislev and Shelukhin proving non-displaceability in the case when $W$ is closed and monotone. The method of proof is to deform the pair-of-pants product on Hamiltonian Floer cohomology using the Lagrangian $L$.

Remarks on symplectic circle actions, torsion and loops

We study loops of symplectic diffeomorphisms of closed symplectic manifolds. Our main result, which is valid for a large class of symplectic manifolds, shows that the flux of a symplectic loop vanishes whenever its orbits are contractible. As a consequence, we obtain a new vanishing result for the flux group and new instances where the presence of a fixed point of a symplectic circle action is a sufficient condition for it to be Hamiltonian. We also obtain applications to symplectic torsion, more precisely, non-trivial elements of $\mathrm{Symp}_{0}(M,ω)$ that have finite order.

Hamiltonian no-torsion

In 2002 Polterovich has notably established that on closed aspherical symplectic manifolds, Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of finite order, which we call Hamiltonian torsion, must in fact be trivial. In this paper we prove the first higher-dimensional Hamiltonian no-torsion theorems beyond the symplectically aspherical case. We start by showing that closed symplectic Calabi-Yau and negative monotone symplectic manifolds do not admit Hamiltonian torsion. Going still beyond topological constraints, we prove that every closed positive monotone symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ admitting Hamiltonian torsion is geometrically uniruled by holomorphic spheres for every $ω$-compatible almost complex structure, partially answering a question of McDuff-Salamon. This provides many additional no-torsion results, and as a corollary yields the geometric uniruledness of monotone Hamiltonian $S^1$-manifolds, a fact closely related to a celebrated result of McDuff from 2009. Moreover, the non-existence of Hamiltonian torsion implies the triviality of Hamiltonian actions of lattices like $SL(k,\mathbb{Z})$ for $k \geq 2,$ as well as those of compact Lie groups. Finally, for monotone symplectic manifolds admitting Hamiltonian torsion, we prove an analogue of Newman's theorem on finite transformation groups for several natural norms on the Hamiltonian group: such subgroups cannot be contained in arbitrarily small neighborhoods of the identity. Our arguments rely on generalized Morse-Bott methods, as well as on quantum Steenrod powers and Smith theory in filtered Floer homology.
