About matter and dark-energy domination eras in R^n gravity or lack thereof

We provide further numerical evidence which shows that R^n models in f(R) metric gravity whether produces a late time acceleration in the Universe or a matter domination era (usually a transient one) but not both. Our results confirm the findings of Amendola et al. (2007), but using a different approach that avoids the mapping to scalar-tensor theories of gravity, and therefore, dispense us from any discussion or debate about frames (Einstein vs Jordan) which are endemic in this subject. This class of models has been used extensively in the literature as an alternative to the dark energy, but should be considered ruled out for being inconsistent with observations. Finally, we discuss a caveat in the analysis by Faraoni (2011), which was used to further constrain these models by using a chameleon mechanism.

Induced scalarization in boson stars and scalar gravitational radiation

The dynamical evolution of boson stars in scalar-tensor theories of gravity is considered in the physical (Jordan) frame. We focus on the study of spontaneous and induced scalarization, for which we take as initial data configurations on the well-known S-branch of a single boson star in general relativity. We show that during the scalarization process a strong emission of scalar radiation occurs. The new stable configurations (S-branch) of a single boson star within a particular scalar-tensor theory are also presented.

Cosmology in f(R) exponential gravity

Using an approach that treats the Ricci scalar itself as a degree of freedom, we analyze the cosmological evolution within an f(R) model that has been proposed recently (exponential gravity) and that can be viable for explaining the accelerated expansion and other features of the Universe. This approach differs from the usual scalar-tensor method and, among other things, it spares us from dealing with unnecessary discussions about frames. It also leads to a simple system of equations which is particularly suited for a numerical analysis.

f(R) Cosmology revisited

We consider a class of metric f(R) modified gravity theories, analyze them in the context of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology and confront the results with some of the known constraints imposed by observations. In particular, we focus in correctly reproducing the matter and effective cosmological constant eras, the age of the Universe, and supernovae data. Our analysis differs in many respects from previous studies. First, we avoid any transformation to a scalar-tensor theory in order to be exempted of any potential pathologies (e.g. multivalued scalar potentials) and also to evade any unnecessary discussion regarding frames (i.e. Einstein vs Jordan). Second, based on a robust approach, we recast the cosmology equations as an initial value problem subject to a modified Hamiltonian constraint. Third, we solve the equations numerically where the Ricci scalar itself is one of the variables, and use the constraint equation to monitor the accuracy of the solutions. We compute the "equation of state" (EOS) associated with the modifications of gravity using several inequivalent definitions that have been proposed in the past and analyze it in detail. We argue that one of these definitions has the best features. In particular, we present the EOS around the so called "phantom divide" boundary and compare it with previous findings.

The gravitational light shift and the Sachs-Wolfe effect

Using a 3+1 decomposition of spacetime, we derive a new formula to compute the gravitational light shifts as measured by two observers which are normal to the spacelike hypersurfaces defining the foliation. This formula is quite general and is also independent of the existence of Killing fields. Known examples are considered to illustrate the usefulness of the formula. In particular, we focus on the Sachs-Wolfe effect that arises in a perturbed Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmology.

The vacuum revealed: the final state of vacuum instabilities in compact stars

Quantum fields in compact stars can be amplified due to a semiclassical instability. This generic feature of scalar fields coupled to curvature may affect the birth and the equilibrium structure of relativistic stars. We point out that the semiclassical instability has a classical counterpart, which occurs exactly in the same region of the parameter space. For negative values of the coupling parameter the instability is equivalent to the well-known "spontaneous scalarization" effect: the plausible end-state of the instability is a static, asymptotically flat equilibrium configuration with nonzero expectation value for the quantum fields, which is compatible with experiments in the weak-field regime and energetically favored over stellar solutions in general relativity. For positive values of the coupling parameter the new configurations are energetically disfavored, and the end-point of the instability remains an open and interesting issue. The vacuum instability may provide a natural mechanism to produce spontaneous scalarization, leading to new experimental opportunities to probe the nature of vacuum energy via astrophysical observations of compact stars.

Robust approach to f(R) gravity

We consider metric f(R) theories of gravity without mapping them to their scalar-tensor counterpart, but using the Ricci scalar itself as an "extra" degree of freedom. This approach avoids then the introduction of a scalar-field potential that might be ill defined (not single valued). In order to explicitly show the usefulness of this method, we focus on static and spherically symmetric spacetimes and deal with the recent controversy about the existence of extended relativistic objects in certain class of f(R) models.

Dynamic transition to spontaneous scalarization in boson stars

We show that the phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization predicted in neutron stars within the framework of scalar-tensor tensor theories of gravity, also takes place in boson stars without including a self-interaction term for the boson field (other than the mass term), contrary to what was claimed before. The analysis is performed in the physical (Jordan) frame and is based on a 3+1 decomposition of spacetime assuming spherical symmetry.

The Einstein-Maxwell system in 3+1 form and initial data for multiple charged black holes

We consider the Einstein-Maxwell system as a Cauchy initial value problem taking the electric and magnetic fields as independent variables. Maxwell's equations in curved spacetimes are derived in detail using a 3+1 formalism and their hyperbolic properties are analyzed, showing that the resulting system is symmetric hyperbolic. We also focus on the problem of finding initial data for multiple charged black holes assuming time-symmetric initial data and using a puncture-like method to solve the Hamiltonian and the Gauss constraints. We study the behavior of the resulting initial data families, and show that previous results in this direction can be obtained as particular cases of our approach.

Hyperbolicity of scalar-tensor theories of gravity

Two first order strongly hyperbolic formulations of scalar-tensor theories of gravity (STT) allowing nonminimal couplings (Jordan frame) are presented along the lines of the 3+1 decomposition of spacetime. One is based on the Bona-Masso formulation while the other one employs a conformal decomposition similar to that of Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura. A modified Bona-Masso slicing condition adapted to the scalar-tensor theory is proposed for the analysis. This study confirms that the scalar-tensor theory posses a well posed Cauchy problem even when formulated in the Jordan frame.

The initial value problem of scalar-tensor theories of gravity

The initial value problem of scalar-tensor theories of gravity (STT) is analyzed in the physical (Jordan) frame using a 3+1 decomposition of spacetime. A first order strongly hyperbolic system is obtained for which the well posedness of the Cauchy problem can be established. We provide two simple applications of the 3+1 system of equations: one for static and spherically symmetric spacetimes which allows the construction of unstable initial data (compact objects) for which a further black hole formation and scalar gravitational wave emission can be analyzed, and another application is for homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes that permits to study the dynamics of the Universe in the framework of STT.

The Cauchy problem of scalar-tensor theories of gravity

The 3+1 formulation of scalar-tensor theories of gravity (STT) is obtained in the physical (Jordan) frame departing from the 4+0 covariant field equations. Contrary to the common belief (folklore), the new system of ADM-like equations shows that the Cauchy problem of STT is well formulated (in the sense that the whole system of evolution equations is of first order in the time-derivative). This is the first step towards a full first order (in time and space) formulation from which a subsequent hyperbolicity analysis (a well-posedness determination) can be performed. Several gauge (lapse and shift) conditions are considered and implemented for STT. In particular, a generalization of the harmonic gauge for STT allows us to prove the well posedness of the STT using a second order analysis which is very similar to the one used in general relativity. Some spacetimes of astrophysical and cosmological interest are considered as specific applications. Several appendices complement the ideas of the main part of the paper.

Scalar hairy black holes and scalarons in the isolated horizons formalism

The Isolated Horizons (IH) formalism, together with a simple phenomenological model for colored black holes has been used to predict non-trivial formulae that relate the ADM mass of the solitons and hairy Black Holes of Gravity-Matter system on the one hand, and several horizon properties of the black holes in the other. In this article, the IH formalism is tested numerically for spherically symmetric solutions to an Einstein-Higgs system where hairy black holes were recently found to exist. It is shown that the mass formulae still hold and that, by appropriately extending the current model, one can account for the behavior of the horizon properties of these new solutions. An empirical formula that approximates the ADM mass of hairy solutions is put forward, and some of its properties are analyzed.

Generalized harmonic spatial coordinates and hyperbolic shift conditions

We propose a generalization of the condition for harmonic spatial coordinates analogous to the generalization of the harmonic time slices introduced by Bona et al., and closely related to dynamic shift conditions recently proposed by Lindblom and Scheel, and Bona and Palenzuela. These generalized harmonic spatial coordinates imply a condition for the shift vector that has the form of an evolution equation for the shift components. We find that in order to decouple the slicing condition from the evolution equation for the shift it is necessary to use a rescaled shift vector. The initial form of the generalized harmonic shift condition is not spatially covariant, but we propose a simple way to make it fully covariant so that it can be used in coordinate systems other than Cartesian. We also analyze the effect of the shift condition proposed here on the hyperbolicity of the evolution equations of general relativity in 1+1 dimensions and 3+1 spherical symmetry, and study the possible development of blow-ups. Finally, we perform a series of numerical experiments to illustrate the behavior of this shift condition.

The violation of the weak energy condition, Is it generic of spontaneous scalarization ?

It was recently shown by Whinnett & Torres \cite{WT} that the phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization (SC) in compact objects (polytropes) was accompanied also by a {\it spontaneous violation of the weak energy condition} (WEC). Notably, by the encounter of negative-energy densities at several star places as measured by a static observer. Here we argue that the negativeness of such densities is not generic of scalar tensor theories of gravity (STT). We support this conclusion by numerical results within a class of STT and by using three realistic models of dense matter. However, we show that the ``angular parts'' of the additional conditions for the WEC to hold $ρ_{\rm eff} + T^{i ({\rm eff})}_{i} \geq 0$ tend to be ``slightly violated'' at the outskirts of the star.

On a debate about cosmic censor violation

We review the arguments and counter arguments about the recent proposal for generic censorship violation. In particular the argument made in gr-qc/0405050 against our proposal for a possible expanding domain wall that could encompass a large black hole, is shown to have a serious flaw. Other problems of the original idea are also discussed.

Dynamical evolution of unstable self-gravitating scalar solitons

Recently, static and spherically symmetric configurations of globally regular self-gravitating scalar solitons were found. These configurations are unstable with respect to radial linear perturbations. In this paper we study the dynamical evolution of such configurations and show that, depending on the sign of the initial perturbation, the solitons either collapse to a Schwarzschild black hole or else ``explode'' into an outward moving domain wall.

The cosmic censor conjecture: Is it generically violated?

It has been recently argued by Hertog, Horowitz and Maeda, that generic reasonable initial data in asymptotically anti deSitter, spherically symmetric, space-times within an Einstein-Higgs theory, will evolve toward a naked singularity, in clear violation of the cosmic censor conjecture. We will argue that there is a logical and physically plausible loophole in the argument and that the numerical evidence in a related problem suggests that this loophole is in fact employed by physics.
