A vanishing theorem and symbolic powers of planar point ideals

The purpose of this note is twofold. We present first a vanishing theorem for families of linear series with base ideal being a fat points ideal. We apply then this result in order to give a partial proof of a conjecture raised by Bocci, Harbourne and Huneke concerning containment relations between ordinary and symbolic powers of planar point ideals.

Containments of symbolic powers of ideals of generic points in $\PP^3$

We show that the Conjecture of Harbourne and Huneke, $I^{(Nr-(N-1))} \subset M^{(r-1)(N-1)}I^{r}$ holds for ideals of generic (simple) points in $\PP^3$. As a result, for such ideals we prove the following bounds, which can be recognized as generalizations of Chudnovsky bounds: $α(I^{(3m-k)}) \geq mα(I)+2m-k$, for any $m \geq 1$ and $k=0,1,2$. Moreover, we obtain lower bounds for the Waldshmidt constant for such ideals.

Linear subspaces, symbolic powers and Nagata type conjectures

Prompted by results of Guardo, Van Tuyl and the second author for lines in projective 3 space, we develop asymptotic upper bounds for the least degree of a homogeneous form vanishing to order at least m on a union of disjoint r dimensional planes in projective n space for n at least 2r+1. These considerations lead to new conjectures that suggest that the well known conjecture of Nagata for points in the projective plane is not sporadic, but rather a special case of a more general phenomenon.

Symbolic powers of planar point configurations

We study initial degrees of symbolic powers of ideals of arbitrary finite sets of points in the projective plane over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show, how bounds on the growth of these degrees determine the geometry of the given set of points.

Symbolic powers of ideals of generic points in P^3

B. Harbourne and C. Huneke conjectured that for any ideal $I$ of fat points in $P^N$ its $r$-th symbolic power $I^{(r)}$ should be contained in $M^{(N-1)r}I^r$, where $M$ denotes the homogeneous maximal ideal in the ring of coordinates of $P^N$. We show that this conjecture holds for the ideal of any number of simple (not fat) points in general position in $P^3$ and for at most $N+1$ simple points in general position in $P^N$. As a corollary we give a positive answer to Chudnovsky Conjecture in the case of generic points in $P^3$.

Recent developments and open problems in linear series

In the week 3--9, October 2010, the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut at Oberwolfach hosted a mini workshop Linear Series on Algebraic Varieties. These notes contain a variety of interesting problems which motivated the participants prior to the event, and examples, results and further problems which grew out of discussions during and shortly after the workshop. A lot of arguments presented here are scattered in the literature or constitute folklore. It was one of our aims to have a usable and easily accessible collection of examples and results.

Linear systems in P^3 with low degrees and low multiplicities

We prove that the linear system of hypersurfaces in P^3 of degree d, 14 <= d <= 40, with double, triple and quadruple points in general position are non-special. This solves the cases that have not been completed in a paper by E. Ballico and M.C. Brambilla.

Regularity and non-emptyness of linear systems in $\mathbb P^n$

The main goal of this paper is to present a new algorithm bounding the regularity and ``alpha'' (the lowest degree of existing hypersurface) of a linear system of hypersurfaces (in $\mathbb P^n$) passing through multiple points in general position. To do the above we formulate and prove new theorem, which allows to show non-specialty of linear system by splitting it into non-special (and simpler) systems. As a result we give new bounds for multiple point Seshadri constants on $\PP^2$.

New effective bounds on the dimension of a linear system in $\mathbb P^2$

The main goal of this paper is to present an algorithm bounding the dimension of a linear system of curves of given degree (or monomial basis) with multiple points in general position. As a result we prove the Hirschowitz--Harbourne Conjecture when the multiplicities of base points are bounded by 11.

Expected term bases for generic multivariate Hermite interpolation

The main goal of the paper is to find an effective estimation for the minimal number of generic points in $\mathbb K^2$ for which the basis for Hermite interpolation consists of the first $\ell$ terms (with respect to total degree ordering). As a result we prove that the space of plane curves of degree $d$ having generic singularities of multiplicity $\leq m$ has the expected dimension if the number of low order singularities (of multiplicity $k\leq12$) is greater then some $r(m,k)$. Additionally, the upper bounds for $r(m,k)$ are given.
