Nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of a charge carrier doped into a Mott insulator

We study real-time dynamics of a charge carrier introduced into undoped Mott insulator propagating under a constant electric field F on the t-J ladder and square lattice. We calculate quasistationary current. In both systems adiabatic regime is observed followed by the positive differential resistivity (PDR) at moderate fields where carrier mobility is determined. Quantitative differences between ladder and 2-dimensional (2D) system emerge when at large fields both systems enter negative differential resistivity (NDR) regime. In the ladder system Bloch-like oscillations prevail, while in 2D the current remains finite, proportional to 1/F. The crossover between PDR and NDR regime in 2D is accompanied by a change of the spatial structure of the propagating spin polaron.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of the Holstein polaron driven by external electric field

This work represents a fundamental study of a Holstein polaron in one dimension driven away from the ground state by a constant electric field. Taking fully into account quantum effects we follow the time-evolution of the system from its ground state as the constant electric field is switched on at t = 0, until it reaches a steady state. At weak electron phonon coupling (EP) the system experiences damped Bloch oscillations (BO) characteristic for noninteracting electron band. An analytic expression of the steady state current is proposed in terms of weak EP coupling and large electric field. For moderate values of EP coupling the oscillations are almost critically damped and the system reaches the steady state after a short time. In the strong coupling limit weakly damped BO, consistent with nearly adiabatic evolution within the polaron band, persist up to extremely large electric fields. A traveling polaron under the influence of the electric field leaves behind a trail of phonon excitations absorbing the excess energy gained from the electric field. The shape of the traveling polaron is investigated in details.

Nonlinear current response of an isolated system of interacting fermions

Nonlinear real-time response of interacting particles is studied on the example of a one-dimensional tight-binding model of spinless fermions driven by electric field. Using equations of motion and numerical methods we show that for a non-integrable case at finite temperatures the major effect of nonlinearity can be taken into account within the linear response formalism extended by a renormalization of the kinetic energy due to the Joule heating. On the other hand, integrable systems show on constant driving a different universality with a damped oscillating current whereby the frequency is related but not equal to the Bloch oscillations.

The Falicov-Kimball model in external magnetic field: orbital effects

We study thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional (2D) Falicov-Kimball model in the presence of external magnetic field perpendicular to the lattice. The field is taken into account by the Peierls substitution in the hopping term. In the non-interacting case the field dependent energy spectrum forms the famous Hofstadter butterfly. Our results indicate that for arbitrary nonzero interaction strength and arbitrary magnetic field there is a gap in the energy spectrum at sufficiently low temperature. The gap vanishes with increase of temperature for weak coupling, however, it persists at high temperatures if the coupling is strong enough. Numerical results have been obtained with the help of Monte Carlo technique based on a modified Metropolis algorithm.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase in the presence of pair hopping interaction

The recent experimental support for the presence of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase in the CeCoIn5 directed the attention towards the mechanisms responsible for this type of superconductivity. We investigate the FFLO state in a model where on--site/inter--site pairing coexists with repulsive pair hopping interaction. The latter interaction is interesting in that it leads to pairing with nonzero momentum of the Cooper pairs even in the absence of the external magnetic field (the so-called eta-pairing). It turns out that depending on the strength of the pair hopping interaction the magnetic field can induce one of two types of the FFLO phase with different spatial modulations of the order parameter. It is argued that the properties of the FFLO phase may give information about the magnitude of the pair hopping interaction. We also show that eta-pairing and d-wave superconductivity may coexist in the FFLO state. It holds true also for superconductors which in the absence of magnetic field are of pure d-wave type.

The Friedel oscillations in the presence of transport currents

We investigate the Friedel oscillations in a nanowire coupled to two macroscopic electrodes of different potentials. We show that the wave-length of the density oscillations monotonically increases with the bias voltage, whereas the amplitude and the spatial decay exponent of the oscillations remain intact. Using the nonequilibrium Keldysh Green functions, we derive an explicit formula that describes voltage dependence of the wave-length of the Friedel oscillations.

Hofstadter butterfly for a finite correlated system

We investigate a finite two-dimensional system in the presence of external magnetic field. We discuss how the energy spectrum depends on the system size, boundary conditions and Coulomb repulsion. On one hand, using these results we present the field dependence of the transport properties of a nanosystem. In particular, we demonstrate that these properties depend on whether the system consists of even or odd number of sites. On the other hand, on the basis of exact results obtained for a finite system we investigate whether the Hofstadter butterfly is robust against strong electronic correlations. We show that for sufficiently strong Coulomb repulsion the Hubbard gap decreases when the magnetic field increases.

Inhomogeneity-induced enhancement of the pairing interaction in cuprates

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy has recently discovered a positive correlation between the magnitude of the superconducting gap and positions of dopant oxygen atoms in Bi-based cuprates. We propose a microscopic mechanism that could be responsible for this effect. In particular, we demonstrate that the dopant-induced spatial variation of the atomic levels always enhances the superexchange interaction.

Transport properties of nanosystems with conventional and unconventional charge density waves

We report a systematic study of transport properties of nanosytems with charge density waves. We demonstrate, how the presence of density waves modifies the current-voltage characteristics. On the other hand hand, we show that the density waves themselves are strongly affected by the applied voltage. This self-consistent problem is solved within the formalism of the nonequilibrium Green functions. The conventional charge density waves occur only for specific, periodically distributed ranges of the voltage. Apart from the low voltage regime, they are incommensurate and the corresponding wave vectors decrease discontinuously when the voltage increases.

Imperfect nanorings with superconducting correlations

The properties of nanoscopic rings with electronic correlations and impurities are analyzed numerically by means of two complementary methods. Namely, we perform exact diagonalization of systems up to several lattice sites and Bogoliubov-de Gennes-equations studies of systems consisting of a few hundred sites. We demonstrate how the properties of the systems are affected by various configurations of impurities for both repulsive and attractive electron-electron interactions. In the case of attractive interaction we show that the nanoscopic properties are mainly determined by the competition between tendencies toward pairing and formation of the density waves. Since the impurities act as pinning centers for the density waves, their configuration determines the result of this competition.

Critical field in a model with local pairs

We analyze the role of Zeeman and orbital pair breaking mechanisms in models appropriate for short coherence length superconductors. In particular, we investigate the attractive Hubbard and the pair hoping models. The orbital pair breaking mechanism dominates in the majority of models with $s$--wave and $d$--wave superconducting order parameters. On the other, the repulsive pair hopping interaction leads to $η$--type pairing, that is stable against the orbital pair breaking. External magnetic field reduces this type of pairing predominantly due to the Zeeman coupling. According to the recent experiments this mechanism is responsible for closing of the pseudogap. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the gap closing field in $η$--phase fits the experimental data very well. We discuss whether the preformed pairs in the $η$--phase could be responsible for the pseudogap phenomenon.

Vortex structure in d-density wave scenario of pseudogap

We investigate the vortex structure assuming the d-density wave scenario of the pseudogap. We discuss the profiles of the order parameters in the vicinity of the vortex, effective vortex charge and the local density of states. We find a pronounced modification of these quantities when compared to a purely superconducting case. Results have been obtained for a clean system as well as in the presence of a nonmagnetic impurity. We show that the competition between superconductivity and the density wave may explain some experimental data recently obtained for high-temperature superconductors. In particular, we show that the d-density wave scenario explains the asymmetry of the gap observed in the vicinity of the vortex core.

Upward curvature of the upper critical field in the Boson--Fermion model

We report on a non-conventional temperature behavior of the upper critical field ($H_{c2}(T)$) which is found for the Boson-Fermion (BF) model. We show that the BF model properly reproduces two crucial features of the experimental data obtained for high-$T_c$ superconductors: $H_{c2}(T)$ does not saturate at low temperatures and has an upward curvature. Moreover, the calculated upper critical field fits very well the experimental results. This agreement holds also for overdoped compounds, where a purely bosonic approach is not applicable.

On the relation between the boson-fermion model and RVB state

We show that the resonating valence bond (RVB) state of the t-J Hamiltonian can be described within an effective boson-fermion model. We derive a boson-fermion Hamiltonian which describes the lowest order coupling between holons and spinon waves. The RVB order parameter determines a hybridization between the both types of excitations. The effective Hamiltonian is investigated within the lowest order self-consistent conserving diagrammatic approximation. We compare our approach with the phenomenological boson--fermion model (BFM) that is believed to describe the pseudogap phase.

Upper critical field for underdoped high-T_c superconductors. Pseudogap and stripe--phase

We investigate the upper critical field in a stripe--phase and in the presence of a phenomenological pseudogap. Our results indicate that the formation of stripes affects the Landau orbits and results in an enhancement of $H_{c2}$. On the other hand, phenomenologically introduced pseudogap leads to a reduction of the upper critical field. This effect is of particular importance when the magnitude of the gap is of the order of the superconducting transition temperature. We have found that a suppression of the upper critical field takes place also for the gap that originates from the charge--density waves.

Upper critical field for anisotropic superconductivity. A tight-binding approach

We study the problem of the upper critical field ($H_{c2}$) for tight-binding electrons in a two-dimensional lattice. The external magnetic field is introduced into the model Hamiltonian both via the Peierls substitution and the Zeeman term. Carrying out calculations for finite systems we analyze the influence of the external field in the commensurable and incommensurable case on an equal footing. The upper critical field has been discussed for intrasite as well as anisotropic intersite pairing that, in the absence of magnetic field, has a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry. A comparison of $H_{c2}$ determined for different symmetries shows that the on-site pairing is more affected by the external field i.e., the critical temperature for the on-site pairing decreases with the increase of the magnetic field faster than in the anisotropic case. Moreover, we have shown that the tight-binding form of the Bloch energy can lead to the upward curvature of $H_{c2}$, provided that the Fermi level is close enough to the van Hove singularity.

BCS-type mean-field theory for t-J model in su(2|1) superalgebra representation

A simple version of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-type mean-field theory for the t-J model is developed. The present approach rigorously treats the constraint of no doubly occupied states and invokes two local order parameters to implement spontaneous breaking of the global U(1)\times U(1) symmetry. This is achieved by identifying the Hubbard operators with generators of the su(2|1) superalgebra in the fundamental representation and employing the CP^{1|1} parameterization for dynamical variables. As a result, an improved phase diagram T_c(δ) in the paramagnetic phase is obtained.
