Gravitational and kinematic redshifts of black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics

Spacetimes arising from nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) are a good laboratory for studying both the nature of regular black hole (RBH) solutions and the imprints of nonlinear electromagnetic fields within this context. Over the past few decades, NED-sourced black hole (BH) spacetimes have attracted considerable attention, but electrically charged RBHs obtained in the so-called $F$ framework have been less addressed in the literature. We consider two electrically charged, fully regular members of the h-family that are solutions to general relativity minimally coupled to NED. Because of their potential astrophysical and astronomical applications, we mainly focus our investigation on the motion of photons and its implications for the gravitational and kinematic redshifts, as well as for the shadow radius, considering the effective geometry followed by photons in NED. Moreover, we consider the observational data for Sagittarius A$^{\star}$ and Messier 87$^{\star}$ BHs to impose some constraints on the charge-to-mass ratio of the fully RBHs. We obtain the general equations that govern the gravitational and kinematic redshifts of NED-sourced BH spacetimes. In particular, for fully RBHs with BH charge-to-mass ratios above some moderate value, we observe discrepancies in their physical and geometrical properties compared to those of the Reissner--Nordström (RN) BH. Therefore, our results indicate that it is possible to distinguish NED-based RBH solutions from RN BHs, from the perspective of gravitational and kinematic redshifts, suggesting potential astrophysical relevance.

Charged particles and fields in bumblebee gravity: Periodic orbits and superradiance

We investigate the dynamics of charged particles and fields in the background of a charged black hole in bumblebee gravity, aiming to better understand the role played by the Lorentz-violating parameter $l$. We first review the derivation of the charged bumblebee black hole and investigate its main physical and geometrical properties. We then obtain the circular and bound trajectories of charged particles and find that the innermost stable circular orbit increases with $l$. By using a numerical approach, we compute the total absorption cross section for arbitrary values of the scalar wave frequency $ω$. Since the spacetime is not asymptotically flat, we construct the total absorption cross section by taking into account the modified asymptotic momentum and flux. Analytical approximations are derived in the low- and high-frequency regimes. The low-frequency expression displays a transition velocity that separates two distinct asymptotic branches and generalizes the corresponding Reissner-Nordström result. Our numerical results for the cross section agree with the analytical approximations in their corresponding limits, and the absorption parameter space can be divided into three regions: Unbounded absorption, bounded absorption, and bounded superradiance. In particular, superradiance occurs whenever $ω<ω_{c}$, where $ω_{c}$ is the threshold for superradiance. Moreover, the superradiance amplification decreases as we increase $l$, and charged bumblebee black holes with $l < 0$ lead to greater superradiant scattering than in the Reissner-Nordström case. We also note that although increasing $l$ lowers the potential barrier, it reduces the total absorption cross section because of the geometrical factor $1/(1+l)$ present in the cross section formula.

Probing nonlinear electrodynamics-sourced black holes via light and orbital mechanics

Well-founded models of nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) are typically characterized by an additional parameter associated with their deviation from linear electrodynamics. In addition to that, from a phenomenological point of view, one of the most intriguing results of NED theory is that photons follow null geodesics according to an effective geometry. In particular, for a two-parameter electromagnetic Lagrangian density, we might observe the vacuum birefringence phenomenon, i.e., photons can follow null geodesics according to two effective geometries. Over the past few decades, efforts have been made to better understand the role of effective light cones in NED theory, as well as to constrain the additional free parameters provided by the theory. We investigate the ModMax black hole (BH) geometry, which is a well-motivated NED-sourced BH based on a two-parameter Lagrangian density, via light and orbital mechanics, considering the Shapiro time, the Sagnac effect, the gravitational and kinematic shifts, and the orbital precession. We find that the corrections introduced by nonlinear electromagnetic fields can be significant. In particular, we show that the Shapiro time delay and the gravitational redshift are identical for both effective metrics, making these observables insensitive to the birefringent structure of ModMax electrodynamics. By contrast, the Sagnac effect and the kinematic shifts remain capable of distinguishing the two effective geometries. Moreover, the orbital mechanics investigation, considering the orbital periapsis precession of the S2 star around Sagittarius A$^{\star}$, provides an observational constraint on the coupling between the NED parameter and the charge-to-mass ratio of the ModMax BH. Generally speaking, we provide a step-by-step procedure for theoretically exploring signatures of NED fields and constraining the free parameters of NED-sourced BH models.

Absorption spectrum and greybody factors of charged black holes in loop quantum gravity

In the last few decades, singularity-free black holes (BHs) obtained in the framework of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) have gained attention in the literature. These compact objects replace the classical singularity with a transition hypersurface called the bounce radius and stand out as potential scenarios for exploring the imprints of LQG in BH physics. Although scalar perturbations in the vicinity of LQG-based BHs are currently being studied, the absorption spectrum has not yet been analyzed in detail. In this work, we present an in-depth investigation of the absorption properties of massless test scalar fields by a charged LQG BH, aiming to better understand the role played by the quantum and charge parameters of the BH spacetime. Using a numerical approach, we compute the absorption cross section (ACS) of the massless scalar wave for arbitrary values of the frequency of the incident wave. We find that the behavior of the ACS as we increase the quantum parameter indicates that the peaks and troughs of the total ACS exhibit opposite behaviors, i.e., the curve related to the highest peak corresponds to the deepest troughs. Moreover, we show that the ACS decreases as we consider higher values of the BH charge-to-mass ratio. This is in stark contrast to the behavior of the absorption spectrum as we vary the quantum parameter. We also draw comparisons with the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) BH, exploring the situations where LQG and RN BHs can have the same absorption properties. Furthermore, we find excellent agreement between our numerical results and the well-known classical and semiclassical approximations for the total ACS in their corresponding limits. For completeness, we also investigate the greybody factors. Our results can be viewed as a first step toward a better understanding of the absorption properties of LQG-inspired BHs.

Two shadows of a single black hole: Vacuum birefringence phenomena within Einstein-nonlinear-electrodynamics

One of the main features of nonlinear electrodynamics is the existence of an effective geometry that describes the geodesic motion of photons. A detailed analysis of the properties of effective geometry is of utmost importance for a better understanding of nonlinear electrodynamics theories and their possible imprints on physics, especially in the context of black holes. We consider a nonlinear electrodynamics model that depends on the two electromagnetic scalar invariants and obtain that the motion of photons in nonlinear electrodynamics exhibits \textit{vacuum birefringence}, i.e., photons can propagate along two distinct paths, depending on their polarization. As a consequence of this phenomenon, we show that static black hole solutions sourced by nonlinear electrodynamics can admit two distinct unstable light rings, leading to the formation of two distinct shadows. Moreover, to explore the potential astrophysical relevance of our results, we also compare them with the astrophysical observations for the shadow radius of Sagittarius A*. We place upper limits on the charge-to-mass ratio of the nonlinear electrodynamics-sourced black hole. We also show that the motion of photons in this context can be interpreted as nongeodesic curves subjected to a four-force term from the perspective of an observer in the spacetime metric, generalizing previous results in the literature for nonlinear electrodynamics models that depend on a single electromagnetic scalar invariant.

Good tachyons, bad bradyons: role reversal in Einstein-nonlinear-electrodynamics models

In relativistic mechanics, the 4-velocity and the 4-momentum need not be parallel. This allows their norm to have a different sign. This possibility occurs in nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) models minimally coupled to Einstein's theory. Surprisingly, for a large class of NED models with a Maxwell limit, for weak fields, the causal (acausal) photons, as determined by their 4-velocity, have a spacelike (timelike) 4-momentum, leading to good tachyons and bad bradyons. Departing from weak fields, this possibility is determined solely by the concavity of the NED Lagrangian, which is consistent with the Dominant Energy Condition analysis. As a corollary, some popular regular black hole solutions sourced by NED, such as the Bardeen and Hayward solutions, are acausal.

Sufficient conditions for unbounded superradiance in black hole spacetimes sourced by nonlinear electrodynamics

Recently, it has been reported that black holes (BHs) sourced by nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) can trigger unbounded superradiance, i. e., the total absorption cross section -- the ratio between the absorbed flux and the incident flux of the wave -- can be negative and unbounded from below. Considering the propagation of massive charged test scalar fields in the vicinity of electrically charged BH solutions based on the NED framework, we derive sufficient conditions to have an unbounded superradiant regime. We also discuss some possible general conditions that the NED electrical source associated with the geometry has to satisfy to trigger an unbounded superradiance. Our results apply to a broad family of electrically charged BH solutions (regular and singular) derived in the framework of NED minimally coupled to general relativity.

Superradiant instability of a charged regular black hole

We show that a charged, massive scalar field in the vicinity of an electrically-charged Ayón-Beato-García (ABG) regular black hole has a spectrum of quasibound states that (in a certain parameter regime) grow exponentially with time, due to black hole superradiance. Superradiant quasibound states are made possible by the enhancement of the electrostatic potential at the horizon in nonlinear electrodynamics; in contrast, the Reissner-Nordström black hole does not possess such superradiant quasibound states. Here we compute the spectrum for a range of multipoles $\ell$ across the parameter space, and we find the fastest growth rate in the monopole mode. We find that a regular black hole with a small charge can still trigger a significant superradiant instability if the charge-to-mass ratio of the field is compensatingly large. We estimate the amount of black hole mass that can be deposited in the scalar field, finding an upper bound of circa $20\%$ in the extreme charge scenario. Finally, we consider the stationary bound states at the superradiant threshold, and we conjecture that, due to this instability, the ABG black hole will evolve towards a configuration with charged scalar hair.

Absorption and (unbounded) superradiance in a static regular black hole spacetime

Regular black holes (RBHs) -- geometries free from curvature singularities -- arise naturally in theories of non linear electrodynamics. Here we study the absorption, and superradiant amplification, of a monochromatic planar wave in a charged, massive scalar field impinging on the electrically-charged Ayón-Beato-García (ABG) RBH. Comparisons are drawn with absorption and superradiance for the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole in linear electrodynamics. We find that, in a certain parameter regime, the ABG absorption cross section is negative, due to superradiance, and moreover it is unbounded from below as the momentum of the wave approaches zero; this phenomenon of ``unbounded superradiance'' is absent in the RN case. We show how the parameter space can be divided into regions, using the bounded/unbounded and absorption/amplification boundaries. After introducing a high-frequency approximation based on particle trajectories, we calculate the absorption cross section numerically, via the partial-wave expansion, as function of wave frequency, and we present a gallery of results. The cross section of the ABG RBH is found to be larger (smaller) than in the RN case when the field charge has the same (opposite) sign as the black hole charge. We show that it is possible to find ``mimics'': situations in which the cross sections of both black holes are very similar. We conclude with a discussion of unbounded superradiance, and superradiant instabilities.

Geodesic analysis, absorption and scattering in the static Hayward spacetime

We investigate the propagation of massless particles and scalar fields in the background of Hayward regular black holes. We compute the absorption and scattering cross sections and compare our numerical results with some analytical approximations, showing that they are in excellent agreement. We show that some of the absorption and scattering results of Reissner-Nordström black holes can be mimicked by Hayward regular black holes, for appropriate choices of the charge of the two different black holes.

Electrically charged regular black holes in nonlinear electrodynamics: light rings, shadows and gravitational lensing

Within nonlinear electrodynamics (NED), photons follow null geodesics of an effective geometry, which is different from the geometry of the spacetime itself. Over the last years, several works were dedicated to investigate the motion of photons in the effective geometry of NED-based magnetically charged regular black hole (RBH) solutions. However, there are few works considering electrically charged RBHs. We study the light rings, shadows, and gravitational lensing of the electrically charged RBH solution proposed by Irina Dymnikova (ID), which is a static and spherically symmetric spacetime with a NED source. We show that the shadow associated to the effective geometry can be almost 10% bigger that the one associated to the standard geometry. We also find that the ID solution may mimic the shadow properties of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) BH, for low-to-extreme values of the electric charge. Besides that, by using the backwards ray-tracing technique, we obtain that ID and RN BH solutions can have a very similar gravitational lensing, for some values of the correspondent electric charges. We also show that the motion of photons in the effective geometry can be interpreted as a non-geodesic curve submitted to a 4-force term, from the perspective of an observer in the standard geometry.

Scattering properties of charged black holes in nonlinear and Maxwell's electrodynamics

We investigate the scattering properties of a massless scalar field in the background of a charged Ayón-Beato-García regular black hole solution. Using a numerical approach, we compute the differential scattering cross section for arbitrary values of the scattering angle and of the incident wave frequency. We compare our results with those obtained via the classical geodesic scattering of massless particles, as well as with the semiclassical glory approximation, and show that they present an excellent agreement in the corresponding limits. We also show that Ayón-Beato-García and Reissner-Nordström black hole solutions present similar scattering properties, for low-to-moderate values of the black hole electric charge, for any value of the scattering angle.
