Generic bifurcation of certain piecewise smooth vector fields

This paper presents results concerning bifurcations of 2D piecewise-smooth dynamical systems governed by vector fields. Generic three-parameter families of a class of Non-Smooth Vector Fields are studied and the bifurcation diagrams are exhibited. Our main results describe the unfolding of the so called Resonant $Fold-Saddle$ singularity.

Study of periodic orbits in periodic perturbations of planar reversible Filippov systems having a two-fold cycle

We study the existence of periodic solutions in a class of planar Filippov systems obtained from non-autonomous periodic perturbations of reversible piecewise smooth differential systems. It is assumed that the unperturbed system presents a simple two-fold cycle, which is characterized by a closed trajectory connecting a visible two-fold singularity to itself. It is shown that under certain generic conditions the perturbed system has sliding and crossing periodic solutions. In order to get our results, Melnikov's ideas were applied together with tools from the geometric singular perturbation theory. Finally, a study of a perturbed piecewise Hamiltonian model is performed.

Chains in $3D$ Filippov Systems: A Chaotic Phenomenon

This work is devoted to the study of global connections between typical generic singularities, named $T$-singularities, in piecewise smooth dynamical systems. Such a singularity presents the so-called nonsmooth diabolo, which consists on a pair of invariant cones emanating from it. We analyze global features arising from the communication between the branches of a nonsmooth diabolo of a $T$-singularity and we prove that, under generic conditions, such communication leads to a chaotic behavior of the system. More specifically, we relate crossing orbits of a Filippov system presenting certain crossing self-connections to a $T$-singularity, with a Smale horseshoe of a first return map associated to the system. The techniques used in this work rely on the detection of transverse intersections between invariant manifolds of a hyperbolic fixed point of saddle type of such a first return map and the analysis of the Smale horseshoe associated to it. From the specific case discussed in our approach, we present a robust chaotic phenomenon for which its counterpart in the smooth case seems to happen only for highly degenerate systems.

On Typical Homoclinic-Like Loops in 3D Filippov Systems

In this work a homoclinic-like loop of a piecewise smooth vector field passing through a typical singularity is analyzed. We have shown that such a loop is robust in one-parameter families of Filippov systems. The basin of attraction of this connection is computed as well as its bifurcation diagram. It is worthwhile to mention that this phenomenon has no counterpart in the smooth world and the techniques used in this analysis differ from the usual ones.

Shilnikov problem in Filippov dynamical systems

In this paper we introduce the concept of sliding Shilnikov orbits for $3$D Filippov systems. In short, such an orbit is a piecewise smooth closed curve, composed by Filippov trajectories, which slides on the switching surface and connects a Filippov equilibrium to itself, namely a pseudo saddle-focus. A version of the Shilnikov's Theorem is provided for such systems. Particularly, we show that sliding Shilnikov orbits occur in generic one-parameter families of Filippov systems, and that arbitrarily close to a sliding Shilnikov orbit there exist countably infinitely many sliding periodic orbits. Here, no additional Shilnikov-like assumption is needed in order to get this last result. In addition, we show the existence of sliding Shilnikov orbits in discontinuous piecewise linear differential systems. As far as we know, the examples of Fillippov systems provided in this paper are the first exhibiting such a sliding phenomenon.

On Structural Stability of 3D Filippov Systems: A Semi-Local Approach

The main purpose of this work is to provide a non-local approach to study aspects of structural stability of 3D Filippov systems. We introduce a notion of semi-local structural stability which detects when a piecewise smooth vector field is robust around the whole switching manifold and we give a complete characterization of such systems. In particular, we present some methods in the qualitative theory of piecewise smooth vector fields, emphasizing a geometrical analysis of the foliations generated by their orbits. Such approach displays surprisingly a rich dynamical behaviour that has been studied in details in this work. It is worth to say that this subject has not been treated recently from a non-local point of view, and we hope that the approach adopted in this work contributes to the understanding of the structural stability for piecewise-smooth vector fields in its most global sense.

Generic Singularities of 3D Piecewise Smooth Dynamical Systems

The aim of this paper is to provide a discussion on current directions of research involving typical singularities of 3D nonsmooth vector fields. A brief survey of known results is presented. The main purpose of this work is to describe the dynamical features of a fold-fold singularity in its most basic form and to give a complete and detailed proof of its local structural stability (or instability). In addition, classes of all topological types of a fold-fold singularity are intrinsically characterized. Such proof essentially follows firstly from some lines laid out by Colombo, García, Jeffrey, Teixeira and others and secondly offers a rigorous mathematical treatment under clear and crisp assumptions and solid arguments. One should to highlight that the geometric-topological methods employed lead us to the completely mathematical understanding of the dynamics around a T-singularity. This approach lends itself to applications in generic bifurcation theory. It is worth to say that such subject is still poorly understood in higher dimension.

Homoclinic boundary-saddle bifurcations in nonsmooth vector fields

In a smooth dynamical system, a homoclinic connection is a closed orbit returning to a saddle equilibrium. Under perturbation, homoclinics are associated with bifurcations of periodic orbits, and with chaos in higher dimensions. Homoclinic connections in nonsmooth systems are complicated by their interaction with discontinuities in their vector fields. A connection may involve a regular saddle outside a discontinuity set, or a pseudo-saddle on a discontinuity set, with segments of the connection allowed to cross or slide along the discontinuity. Even the simplest case, that of connection to a regular saddle that hits a discontinuity as a parameter is varied, is surprisingly complex. Bifurcation diagrams are presented here for non-resonant saddles in the plane, including an example in a forced pendulum.

An asymptotically stable cusp-fold singularity in 3D piecewise smooth vector fields

This paper is concerned with the analysis of a typical singularity of piecewise smooth vector fields on $R^3$ composed by two zones. In our object of study, the cusp-fold singularity, we consider the simultaneous occurrence of a cusp singularity for one vector field and a fold singularity for the other one. We exhibit a normal form that presents one of the most important property searched for in piecewise smooth vector fields: the asymptotical stability.

On 3-parameter families of piecewise smooth vector fields in the plane

This paper is concerned with the local bifurcation analysis around typical singularities of piecewise smooth planar dynamical systems. Three-parameter families of a class of non$-$smooth vector fields are studied and the tridimensional bifurcation diagrams are exhibited. Our main results describe the unfolding of the so called fold-cusp singularity by means of the variation of 3 parameters.
