Simulations of structure formation in interacting dark energy cosmologies

The evidence in favor of a dark energy component dominating the Universe, and driving its presently accelerated expansion, has progressively grown during the last decade of cosmological observations. If this dark energy is given by a dynamic scalar field, it may also have a direct interaction with other matter fields in the Universe, in particular with cold dark matter. Such interaction would imprint new features on the cosmological background evolution as well as on the growth of cosmic structure, like an additional long-range fifth-force between massive particles, or a variation in time of the dark matter particle mass. We review here the implementation of these new physical effects in the N-body code GADGET-2, and we discuss the outcomes of a series of high-resolution N-body simulations for a selected family of interacting dark energy models, as already presented in Baldi et al. [20]. We interestingly find, in contrast with previous claims, that the inner overdensity of dark matter halos decreases in these models with respect to LCDM, and consistently halo concentrations show a progressive reduction for increasing couplings. Furthermore, the coupling induces a bias in the overdensities of cold dark matter and baryons that determines a decrease of the halo baryon fraction below its cosmological value. These results go in the direction of alleviating tensions between astrophysical observations and the predictions of the LCDM model on small scales, thereby opening new room for coupled dark energy models as an alternative to the cosmological constant.

LDPC codes in the McEliece cryptosystem: attacks and countermeasures

The McEliece cryptosystem is a public-key cryptosystem based on coding theory that has successfully resisted cryptanalysis for thirty years. The original version, based on Goppa codes, is able to guarantee a high level of security, and is faster than competing solutions, like RSA. Despite this, it has been rarely considered in practical applications, due to two major drawbacks: i) large size of the public key and ii) low transmission rate. Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes are state-of-art forward error correcting codes that permit to approach the Shannon limit while ensuring limited complexity. Quasi-Cyclic (QC) LDPC codes are a particular class of LDPC codes, able to join low complexity encoding of QC codes with high-performing and low-complexity decoding of LDPC codes. In a previous work it has been proposed to adopt a particular family of QC-LDPC codes in the McEliece cryptosystem to reduce the key size and increase the transmission rate. Recently, however, new attacks have been found that are able to exploit a flaw in the transformation from the private key to the public one. Such attacks can be effectively countered by changing the form of some constituent matrices, without altering the system parameters. This work gives an overview of the QC-LDPC codes-based McEliece cryptosystem and its cryptanalysis. Two recent versions are considered, and their ability to counter all the currently known attacks is discussed. A third version able to reach a higher security level is also proposed. Finally, it is shown that the new QC-LDPC codes-based cryptosystem scales favorably with the key length.

Exact and Approximate Expressions for the Probability of Undetected Error of Varshamov-Tenengol'ts Codes

Computation of the undetected error probability for error correcting codes over the Z-channel is an important issue, explored only in part in previous literature. In this paper we consider the case of Varshamov-Tenengol'ts codes, by presenting some analytical, numerical, and heuristic methods for unveiling this additional feature. Possible comparisons with Hamming codes are also shown and discussed.

Growing Matter

We investigate quintessence cosmologies with a matter component consisting of particles with an increasing mass. While negligible in early cosmology, the appearance of a growing matter component has stopped the evolution of the cosmon field at a redshift around six. In turn, this has triggered the accelerated expansion of the Universe. We propose to associate growing matter with neutrinos. Then the presently observed dark energy density and its equation of state are determined by the neutrino mass.

Inflation with violation of the null energy condition

Inflation may have been driven by a component which violated the Null-Energy Condition, thereby leading to {\it super inflation}. We provide the formalism to study cosmological perturbations when such a component is described by a scalar field with arbitrary Lagrangian. Since the background curvature grows with time, gravitational waves always have a blue spectrum. Scalar perturbations may also have a blue spectrum, {\em albeit} in single field models. We apply our formalism to the case of phantom inflation with an exponential potential (whose pole-like inflationary stage is an attractor for inhomogeneous cosmological models for any value of the potential slope). We finally compare the predictions of super inflation with those of standard inflation stressing the role of gravitational waves.
