Determining the Mass of Supersymmetric Scalars at the CLIC Multi-TeV e+e- Collider

The determination of the smuon mass at the CLIC multi-TeV e+e- linear collider has been studied for two CMSSM benchmarks. Results are given for both the analysis of the muon energy spectrum and the threshold scan method. The effects of detector resolution, beam-beam interactions and accelerator- induced backgrounds are discussed. The energy spectrum technique is also applied to the t -> t ~g process to determine the scalar top mass, in scenarios with the gluino lighter than the squarks.

Charting the Higgs Boson Profile e+e- Linear Colliders

The problems of the origin of mass and of electro-weak symmetry breaking are central to the programme of research in particle physics, at present and in the coming decades. This paper reviews the potential of high energy, high luminosity e+e- linear colliders in exploring the Higgs sector,to extend and complement the data which will become available from hadron colliders. The accuracy of measurements of the Higgs boson properties will not only probe the validity of the Higgs mechanism but also provide sensitivity to New Physics beyond the Standard Model.

Studies of New Vector Resonances at the CLIC Multi-TeV e+e- Collider

Several models predict the existence of new vector resonances in the multi-TeV region, which can be produced in high energy e+e- collisions in the s-channel. In this paper we review the existing limits on the masses of these resonances from LEP/SLC and TEVATRON data and from atomic parity violation in some specific models. We study the potential of a multi-TeV e+e- collider, such as CLIC, for the determination of their properties and nature.

Experimental Approaches at Linear Colliders

This report summarises the activity of the E3 working group "Experimental Approaches at Linear Colliders". The group was charged with examining critically the physics case for a linear collider of energy of order 1 TeV as well as the cases for higher energy machines, assessing the performance requirements and exploring the viability of several special options. In addition it was asked to identify the critical areas where R&D is required.

Studying the Higgs Potential at the e+e- Linear Collider

The determination of the shape of the Higgs potential is needed to complete the investigation of the Higgs profile and to obtain a direct experimental proof of the mechanism of electro-weak symmetry breaking. This can be achieved, at a linear collider, by determining the Higgs triple self-coupling g_HHH in the processes e+e--> HHZ and HHnunu and, possibly, the quartic coupling. This paper summarises the results of a study of the expected accuracies on the determination of g_HHH at a TeV-class LC and at a multi-TeV LC. The statistical dilution arising from contributions not sensitive to the triple Higgs vertex, can be reduced by means of variables sensitive to the kinematics and the spin properties of the reactions.

The CLIC Study: Taking the LEP Legacy to the Multi-TeV Frontier

The CLIC Study that aims at a linear collider able to deliver e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 5 TeV with luminosity of 10^35 cm^-2 s^-1 is presented. Its physics potential is outlined with special emphasis to the relationships to the experience gained in a decade of e+e- experimentation at LEP.

Physics Signatures at CLIC

A set of signatures for physics processes of potential interests for the CLIC programme at 1 - 5 TeV are discussed. These signatures, that may correspond to the manifestation of different scenarios of new physics as well to Standard Model precision tests, are proposed as benchmarks for the optimisation of the CLIC accelerator parameters and for a first definition of the required detector response.

Semileptonic B Decays - Recent Results from LEP and Comparison with Upsilon(4S) Data

Recent analyses of the LEP and Upsilon(4S) data have better outlined the picture of semileptonic B decays. Results on inclusive and exclusive decay branching fractions and on the extraction of the |Vub| and |Vcb| elements of the CKM mixing matrix are discussed, together with some of the still open questions and the sources of model systematics.

Studies of s-channel Resonances at the CLIC Multi-TeV e+e- Collider

Several models predict the existence of new resonances in the multi-TeV region, which should be accessible in e+e- collisions by s-channel production. In this paper, we review the phenomenology of some specific models and we present a preliminary study of the potential of the future CLIC collider for the determination of their nature and properties.

Jet Flavour Identification at the CLIC Multi-TeV e+e- Collider

Jet flavour identification in multi-TeV e+e- collisions is expected to provide insights on new phenomena at scales beyond those probed by the LHC. The anticipated high track density and jet collimation represent a new challenge to jet tagging algorithms. A method, based on the sampling of the jet charged multiplicity, sensitive to the long decay length and large decay multiplicity of heavy flavour hadrons is proposed and the expected performances for the tagging of e+e- -> bb events at 3 TeV are discussed.

Study of gamma gamma Background in e+e- -> W+W- nu nu -> H nu nu Events at the Tesla e+e- Linear Collider

The effect of the overlap of gamma gamma -> hadrons to H nu nu events has been studied for the case of the Tesla e+e- linear collider at 350 GeV. It was found that, due to the significant bunch length and the track extrapolation accuracy provided by the Vertex Tracker, the gamma gamma background to physics events can be substantially reduced, with moderate loss in reconstruction efficiency, by a combination of kinematical and vertex topology observables. The remaining background, being confined to very forward hadron production, does not significantly interfere with the event reconstruction.

Study of b -> u l nu Decays with an Inclusive Generator

A generator for inclusive b -> u l nu decays has been developed. Different prescriptions have been applied to describe the kinematics of the b-quark inside the hadron and the generation of the hadronic final states. Results are presented with particular attention to the invariant mass of the hadronic system recoiling against the lepton and its resonance decomposition. These studies are of special relevance for the extraction of Vub from semileptonic B decays at LEP and at B factories.

The Vertex Tracker at the e+e- Linear Collider Conceptual Design, Detector R&D and Physics Performances for the Next Generation of Silicon Vertex Detectors

The e+e- linear collider physics programme sets highly demanding requirements on the accurate determination of charged particle trajectories close to their production point. A new generation of Vertex Trackers, based on different technologies of high resolution silicon sensors, is being developed to provide the needed performances. These developments are based on the experience with the LEP/SLC vertex detectors and on the results of the R&D programs for the LHC trackers and also define a further program of R&D specific to the linear collider applications. In this paper the present status of the conceptual tracker design, silicon detector R&D and physics studies is discussed.

Measuring Higgs Branching Ratios and telling the SM from a MSSM Higgs Boson at the e+e- Linear Collider

An accurate determination of the Higgs decay branching ratios to bb, cc, gg, WW* and tau tau pairs is important for the study of the Higgs couplings and for determining its SM or MSSM nature in the mass range 100 GeV/c2 < M_H < 140 GeV/c^2. This measurement also represents an important benchmark for the optimisation of the detector design. The accuracy on the determination of the Higgs decay branching ratio to fermions and WW* pairs has been studied using the simulation of the detector designed for the TESLA e+e- linear collider at c.m. energy of 350 GeV and 500 GeV. The results are discussed in terms of the ability of discriminating between the SM and a MSSM neutral Higgs boson and of the predictivity on the A boson mass in the MSSM scenario.
